Anyone else want in-game voice chat?

I personally do not like voice chat of any kind.
It always ruins the feel of the game to me.

Mentioned it in pretty much every beta survey. Makes grouping so much easier on the fly with this feature.

It'd be neat.. but I'd expect the voip lag/delay in pvp... and it would be painful to here someone blasting music through thier headset ( instead of just setting there desktop noise to their mic... like in APB ) it would make dungeons a lot more fun... since you can call out ninja looters/relay fight info quickly or during combat... (its a good thing vr dung chest loot blows atm.. not many ninja looters)

I'd use it in a pug or pvp if it was Group only voip. Proximity chat would be neat... but if you could hear enemy banter... you'd probably cry yourself to sleep at night... and then the game would be full of trash talking eachother...
(I mean it is right now... but still very tame compared to previous mmos.)

Yep, I think I'd hate proximity chat. Needs to be group/kin "by invitation only".

Team Speak, Mumble, Vent etc. are fine, but not something you want to mess with for every little 2 or 3 man group or PUG. There's always somebody who'd not set up right, can't download it, wants to use Vent instead of TS or whatever (or vice-a-versa).

An in-game audio chat that EVERYONE with a mic has access to, with basic features for small groups, would be great to make this game more group friendly. I've played other games with it, and it at least doubles the amount of time I use voice with people.

Yes because everyone needs to hear techno music, soundboards and YOU WANT GOLD? YOU BUY NOW CHEAP GOLD! and the ever so popular HOW I MINE FOR FISH?
This is why it would have a max and minimum range, just like the /say option. Not rocket science here.

Would still have to put up with people in my ear that I don't want to hear.

Because "Esc -> Settings -> Voice Enabled: OFF" is too hard to click?

I'd rather they not waste time with it at this point. In game voice chat is never good for games like this, a third party voice chat is always the superior choice and after the terrible public voice chat I experienced in defiance I do not want to hear it again.

    1. Never? A lot of EQ2 players, and Lotro players, and even Eve players, might disagree.

    2. Always? I think that word doesn't mean what you think it does. Not if, in your 6 person group, 2 people use Vent, 1 uses mumble, 2 more use TS, and 1 doesn't know what any of them are. Not if you have to wait forever for a quick grouping that needs voice to start because one person screwed up their Vent settings and keeps having to mess with them. Not if no one has a server for the program you finally do choose. In all those cases, being able to jump in to a simple, ubiquitous in-game voice chat is clearly superior.

    3. ESO is thankfully not anything like Defiance.

Yeah, but it's the same as the others--you can't assume everyone is using it, so it's usefulness it limited, especially for casual, on-the-fly grouping. There needs to be a method that everyone has access to, with simple, basic settings.

But as already mentioned - many of us would just turn in-game chat off, so you still wouldn't be able to assume everyone is using it, and it's usefulness would be limited if dependent on this.

I'm not sure how you see in-game voip resolving these concerns?

Turning it off is not the same at all as not having it. People are always free to say, nope, no voice chat for me--and play without it, or leave the group.

That's a big difference from wanting to use Voice chat, but not having the same software, or knowing how to set it up, or an available server, so you end up waiting while people download/figure out settings/argue about which to use, etc.

I'm in the no camp. I don't want to hear a bunch of dodgy microphones, people being abusive to others that may be having issues with a run. It also majorly ruins immersion. And I like the sounds from the game...I don't want to turn them down just to hear someone barking out instructions...Or just chatting inane bs. It's not worth the hassle. If there was some written coordination at the beginning of runs, fine. If not, use an external voice system.

*add* I used VoiP in LOTRo. The quality was all over the place. You had to mess around to be able to hear everyone, others were too loud. I also saw the voice system abused a lot (On pug runs naturally). As I said before, when it's used to insult other people, it's not worth it. There is always someone out there who will use whatever is offered to be a jackass.

No one NEEDS voice chat. Use raidcall, or something if voice chat is wanted, but no one NEEDS it in game.
No one NEEDS the chat window, by the same token.

People keep saying they won't use it because there is no reason to. I have to ask if they communicate at all then?

I believe I could stand being hit in the mouth with a wire brush easier than having to stop controlling my character to open that horrid window and type out a conversation.

Haven't we evolved far enough from cave paintings?

When its built in, it becomes:

    A. Expected
    B. Mandatory in many cases

    So C. No.

Yes, eq2 had decent voice chat. That didnt stop me from hating it. My raid guild used it instead of a third party and the raid leader was too quiet. Turn him up and its distorted. I hated it. The amount of variation in options I have in a third party program, including removing and/or globally muting that annoying jackalope itself makes it superior.

I had trouble getting pugs as a raid geared dirge/illusionist(that raided with one of the better guilds on the server with offers from a ww top guild :p srsly screw strike) because I refused to use voice chat with pugs.

If I dont know you, I dont want to get in voice with you. I know a lot like this. Id rather it not become mandatory to get anything done(which it will), lag the server(which it likely will), and Id prefer they not waste their damn time with something already served by third party.

Id also like Zdnimax to flat out say yes or no so these threads can die in Daedric fire.

Sure...lets have one. As long as I cant turn it off when I don't want it. Which would be 99% of the time. Last thing I want is to hear a bunch of whiney voiced 12 yr olds (or some 40 yr olds fall in this group too) *** and yell.

Zone chat has enough of that.

I think I'd rather hear them, then try to decipher their bad typing/spelling or ask a question in chat and have to wait, and wait, and wait while they peck out some ambiguous response that could be resolved in 2 seconds with voice.

Voice chat shouldn't be hard on the server. They should have an alternate server for voice that you connect too.

In-game voice chat is pretty much a staple of modern MMOs. I'm fairly surprised that it's not present in-game.

Trolls can be muted. Abuse is easily thwarted.

The real problem comes when people try to idle in both Ventrilo and use in-game voice chat. They often get confused about which they are talking in and either talk in the wrong one (which can be hilarious or humiliating) or talk in both simultaneously. Causes a lot of confusion.

I completely agree. This is even more paramount when actually in the thick of it.

My summoner lost his minion with the previous mob and need to call forth another one. Then he needs to wait a few seconds for his Magicka to build back up. This was during a difficult dungeon and the group runs before he can get ready and he is shunned for not being ready. I could have easily said "wait a sec form me to get set..." while I was hitting buttons to control my character.

Instead, I must force the delay even further by having to stop and build a fire to send smoke signals to the group.
