I've got to agree with some of the other people in this topic. You guys need to desperately add a filter to block out names with Gamemaster, GM and all variants ASAP.
The post made by @GossiTheDog reveals a huge flaw in your system. Hell to be frank perhaps this whole topic needs to be deleted. You've already got gold spammers roaming the forums now which in turn forced you guys to disable private messages. If one of them comes across this topic and sees they can make characters with Gamemaster in their name then I feel you'll have a new major set of problems to deal with. I can tell you from experience that this was a problem in World of Warcraft years ago and that it led to quite a few naïve folks giving out their account info to people pretending to be GM's.Edited by Enigma1985 on April 30, 2014 4:13AM0 -
soalrism✭✭A real Gamemaster is level 50. Players cant be level 50, they pass from lv49 to veteran 1.
Also real Gamemasters wear a ghostly robe, they look like spirits, you can see trough them. So is very easy to see if a gamemaster is real or not. Also in the chat GMs use system messages to comunicate to the server.
you are right, but not everybody knows that! so zenimax HAS to improve the system! and letting people choose "gamemaster" as part of their name is bad.

Rudal✭✭✭Not quite connected, but the other day I see a VR1 player (am vr2) who was a skeleton (type used for enemy’s) using a wayshrine, he then mounted his horse and rode off, then ~1h later I see the same named player still a skeleton in a totally different area across the map doing a dungeon, I can only assume other people were seeing him as a skeleton, as more than a few players tried to manually attack him before realising.
So I can only assume there must be some way to spoof characters, else it was just someone from the ESO team having a little fun or someone who has found a quest exploit where you are turned into a skeleton as part of the quest then have exited the quest area while retaining the skeleton look, if it’s the former it may not bode well if people could also spoof the ethereal character GM’s use.
There is a village in Shadowfen (Ebonheart Pact territory)where as reward you get the skeleton costume and it can be transferred between characters.
There is a lot of skeletons running around in Ebonheart Pact

maybe you could do something to prevent people from posting text in alternate colours?
this would go some way to preventing spammers/phishers from appearing to be an official/GM or the system.

Ah jokes aside trust me when i say, if you see a GM, you are sure its a GM and not someone who is faking it.

As others have pointed out however not everyone knows this. There are some really "special" people that play MMO's (for lack of a better word/term that won't involve cursing)
These are the same people who see a banner ad on a website that says something along the lines of "YOU JUST WON A MILLION DOLLARS!" or "Virus Detected! Click here to fix it!"

✭✭ZOS needs to do what Blizzard did, and put a little tag next to things that GM's say in chat. The same icon used for staff posters on the forums would work.
I want to note that Blizzard only implemented this after several years, and many GM impersonations.
This is what kills me about new MMOs and their developers.
Why can they not learn from other MMOs? It is like each new MMO creator thinks stuff like this could never happen to them.0 -

M'aiq's already in game. There might be an automatic lockout that prevents you from duplicating an NPC's name. It'd also explain why someone who named their character "Dark Brotherhood Assassin" in early access got locked out of their character later.0 -

If I remember well, it's written in the system message how to tell them
Something like " /tell Gamemaster Something, "
Don't forget the coma at the end, it's usually the reason people fail to whisper them.

he WAS a real GM as he was glowing blue and made 5+ botters I reported disappear, but when I took a screenshot of him using fraps he wasn't in the screenshot. and I took only one ss on that day. ss of him. hmmm odd
he also said GMs don't always use system messages because some botters log off when they see a system message on screen.
too bad I don't have a screenshot of it to back it up but that's what he said to me anyways
and those who have seen GMs in-game, did they just make the botters "disappear" in thin air like I saw?#teamEmeric0 -
