The monster design of ESO looks like "too much cute".
ESO khajiit is extremely cute. I really love it. But monsters should not be cute.

The Chimera WB in Galen area looks like furry doll. It doesn't look like ominous monster
compared with Witcher3 or DarkSouls zombies. I don't like monster design of ESO from 2014.

I get what you are saying with some monsters, almost cartoonish tho I feel those are a minority.
Most of the monsters seem pretty spot on to me.

And the Chimera, I do have to disagree, that creature is fiercely GORGEOUS!
So much so I don't have the heart to attack it, was actually surprised to see it was a lesser mob around only 100k Health.
For a minute I thought I'd blundered into a WB area bcuz it really looks like something that should have a few million HP.

Instead of attacking I sat a little distance away and just watched it for a couple minutes, very very cool B)

EDIT: TIL there actually IS a Chimera WB who is also fiercely GORGEOUS and does in fact, have a few million HP :#

The ESO Chimera is not a Chimera. It's a Hydra with three different heads. A Chimera has a lion head, a goat head on it's back and snake head at the tail.

I think it's cool that monsters in ESO don't look as scary as monsters in the Souls games. It's a different type of fantasy environment, so it's fitting that the enemies look more powerful/formidable than straightforwardly scary/disgusting. The exception would be the voidmother from VH--the animations and voice acting were incredibly creepy

Still closer to a chimera. It's just the Tamriel version.

Isn't it a good thing that the monsters here vary from those in other games? That gives ESO its own distinct personality and ambiance.

I always feel bad when I kill nix hounds because they're cute. Also gryphons that are near babies. I always think, "Don't worry, dear. Mom will respawn soon." LOL.

Having said that, I'm fine with how the monsters are designed.

One of the things that makes the ES series so special to me is that despite being yet another fantasy game series inspired by D&D, and despite having plenty of stuff obviously inspired by various rl cultures, Tamriel has always felt quite unique. Its art design is definitely a part of that.

I think it's good that ESO has a range of monster designs. In a game like the Witcher or Darksouls it makes sense that they all look like these horrifying monstrosities because they're supposed to be unnatural and 'wrong'.

By contrast a lot of the enemies we fight in ESO are part of the natural wildlife of Tamriel (everything from mudcrabs to wolves to spriggans) or other people (either part of the playable races or other races like goblins and maomer) so it makes sense that they look more 'natural' and less horrifying. Also it adds to the impact when we do see something like a flesh atronach or some eldritch abomination from Oblivion - just the design can tell you this isn't just some creature, this is something that looks like it shouldn't even exist and there's probably a bigger evil behind it.

I wouldn't mind more raw visuals but I'm not sure if it would have enough mass appeal for a big MMO.

The style of fantasy in ESO goes along with the monster design. But I do agree with the op to some extent. Some of the monsters are to cartoonish and goofy, making them very unmemorable for me. The real baddies are the ones that stick out to me, but they cant all be like that.

    I like cute monsters.

With bad combat system, like it is now after U35 and lags in PVP - it woud be better pet them )

Skills do not normally work or press, sets and skills are nerfed each update.

Players leave the game after such bad changes.

At least some thing is cute !

The difference between The Elder Scrolls and things like Dark Souls and the Witcher is that the TES universe isn't made to be a dark and gritty one by default, whereas the other two are by design.
The witcher is full of moments that ask you who the real monster is, the monsters you're hunting or the people who hired you to hunt them. Dark Souls is set in a world where all order has totally collapsed and everybody is fighting over scraps. Those are both dark fantasy.
I'm glad that TES goes it's own way and doesn't just follow other games direction in it's art, but to each their own.

Eh... cute is pretty subjective. Most creatures in dark souls are pretty twisted, eldritch even. It's a super twisted world where nothing wants to be your friend and almost anyone you try to help has something terrible happen to them.
The TES series is much more light hearted and frankly I like a good number of the cuter creature designs. There are still some lovecraftian nightmare monsters in the tes universe but they are the exception, not the rule and that makes them even more memorable in my opinion.

Dark Souls has funny little mushroom guys that punch you and squeak when they die. There are also these funny shrub men who are just busy pruning trees until you make them mad. Then Elden Ring has these silly little cat faced goblin guys that make adorable pit-pap sounds when they run and these glowing snail/snake guys that do a funny little dance. Just to name a few!

Don't really think the cat goblin guys are cute, but I gotta agree on the rest, especially the mushroom guys and those snails.

What? I haven't seen a single enemy that I'd classify as "cute" everything is gritty dark fantasy and the Chimera design is exactly what I'd expect from a chimera design and it is completely badass in my opinion. What do you think a chimera should look like? Argonian Behemoths are anything but "cute" design too.
