Companion Rapport... from the Afterlife

This morning I ran the holiday crow quest to defeat the boss. I had Isobel with me. With the boss down about 80%, inspite of my best efforts, Isobel died (no time to resurrect). About a minute later, with the boss now down 90%, I suddenly see a little green pop-up companion message stating Isobel liked that and rapport had increased.

😳

I know it was likely a latency issue, but the timing was enough to make you go...WTH!?!

Haha! My tank and Isobel soloed nDS1 today. All went well until the last fight with the big centurion. It was a very very long fight since he seems to have significant hp regen to counter my tank's whopping 5k dps. Beating his health down was 3 steps forward and 2 back. I couldn't keep Isobel out of his red that well and still damage the boss so lost her at one point. Oh great, even less dps. Then I remembered there's a good reason my tank has +40k health and capped resists. He just briefly stopped fighting and resurrected Isobel no problem, losing but a sliver of his own health. The rest of the fight went fine but I was surprised this boss has such good hp regen.

the boss in that one heals when hes standing inside of the spiders green aoe fields and it is very potent, so you need to either taunt him away from those, or kill the spider your standing near as they dont have that much health

last week i was using isobel to solo run shipwright regret, she was the tank and i was the dps lol

My main problem with companions is that they consistently stand in red, most of the time making no effort to get out of it. They do help you solo a lot of content but die a lot because of this.

Even if Dame Isobel dies in a fight, as long as its in her rappor list, she will gain rapport when she ressurects.
Happens a lot when in high isle, poor dame tries so hard in fissures fight, she always end up dead, but gets the rapport when she lives again.

Standing in red is kind of the only thing I think that really holds them back. I really hope zos can get them to be better about aoe stuff.

For some weird reason, when I read the title, I thought it meant to imply that your companion actively liked it when YOU died.

And now the idea of a companion who likes it when the player dies is stuck in my head. That would be low key hilarious. :D A sadistic companion…

it reminds me of the time Mirri got rapport when I got caught in a delve blade trap. For some reason, she liked that.

Dame Isobel is a true knight and champion <3

As to keeping her (and other companions) alive, this one has found it useful to have:

For companions who are tanks, use heavy armour’s skill, Bulwark. This will give them a bit of grace period.

This one always has some sort of healing skills available: for example if Dragonknight, use cauterise or obsidian shard.

Have the second bar as healer/resto staff as combat prayer is quite helpful.

Before boss fight, this one changes the companions skills to ensure one heal and one shield/evade are slotted.

Of course, there is always the stupid fatal attraction of “standing in 🔴 “ but with those preventatives, companions die much less.

This is no different than you, as a player, continuing to get experience from your group members' kills while lying on the ground dead.

I suppose you could say that your soul/spirit/whatever is observing and learning from the combat (since you, as the player, can still watch the combat unfold from your death screen), and I suppose this line of reasoning can be applicable for companions as well.

Like getting kill enemy players and capture keep quest complete while dead outside it.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

      This just happened:

Sammy has an evil Nord vampire character who is into Blade of Woe, thieving, and drinking blood (in no particular order).

Today, Lady B and Isobel were out and about in Auridon, showing off their Halloween finery when Lady B saw some Veiled Inheritance and promptly fed on them. Forgot to put Dame Isobel away. Oops.

Isobel dropped rapport but commented: “Your prowess befits a knight. Well done!”

      WTH?

I have Isobel outfitted as a tank. Usually I have no problem ensuring she stays alive. For some reason, during this particular round, I got hung up on some spurious pixals and was unable to roll and evade. By the time I managed to get free, Isobel was dead.

The team for this match was my primary healer and another player's DD/tank, as well as our two companions. Once I managed to regain mobility, I put my focus on healing up the team and keeping all three of us alive until we achieved victory.

Now that I think about it, what ever caused me to get hung up might be related to the delayed companion rapport increase message.

how hilarious would it be if you were negative rapport after using the blade of woe like a thousand times, and companions like Bastian and Mirri liked it when you died.

but to those of us saying companions should walk out of AOEs- if they start doing this for companions, then the AI in the game is going to get this ability. We need the ability to direct them on where to move, not for them to automatically walk out of AOEs. If they improve the AI to auto walk out of AOEs then it will make other encounters much more annoying and it will be a huge nerf to anyone who uses AOE dots, forcing us to use sticky dots instead.

the companions already use a different AI from the enemy NPCs

majority of npcs do not dodge roll, and the companions do move around (if they are ranged they will strafe, albeit slowly), while enemy npcs also do not do this

companions are only just barely smarter than the normal enemies though

the biggest problem ive had is that in a lot of dlc dungeons the companions outright "ignore" mechanics and get frequently just killed (first boss of earthen root enclave they dont even try to hide behind the rocks, last boss in black drake villa they dont move in when the boss does the big fire swirl thing

its hard for them to help the player when they are affected by these mechanics (when stuff like sorc pets are not), they are not smart enough to deal with this stuff

This one finds the lag in skills or switching bars can be a problem with getting the healing done in time. Even dodging can sometimes take 2 seconds (which is an eternity).
