For immersion reasons. I just use 3rd person if it's necessary for having a better overview, like in some group dungeons.

I am not my character; rather, I travel with her as an ethereal spirit. Therefore it makes perfect sense to have the 'over her shoulder' third person view. Not to mention I find the game much better suited to third person.

I play in 3rd person about 90% of the time but go into 1st person if I'm looking at something close up or otherwise my character is in the way.

I used to do it a lot more early on but once I learned that there are no little items 'hidden' on the ground like in other TES games and most of the weapons, armour, drinks etc. placed outside containers are not worth picking up it got a lot less common as I was less worried about looking for things outside of containers. The important stuff like lore books and collection items glow so you don't really need to hunt for them.

Most of the time though I play in 3rd person and zoomed out because having that wider view of what's going on all around me is more important than seeing the bit of the screen blocked by my character.

Only when I am looting containers in houses etc or when I am crafting, so that I don't accidently steal items nearby the stations and turn in point.

When it comes to inside dungeons etc, I do a quick change from 3rd to 1st to loot any containers I may want to examine closer.

Also I make sure that the first person view is zoomed out as far as possible in the game settings so that it is not too close to what I want to look at. I suggest everyone to try changing this setting as it zooms in far too much by default imo. Zooming in really shows the age of the game for some items and it is not a good experience, even on a PS5 lol. Example, bananas and boxes of fruit are VERY bad to look at.

I play ESO mostly in third-person view, but occasionally switch to first-person view while exploring and looting, as well as in combat if I want to get a better look at whatever I'm fighting (to better appreciate the artwork and design that went into it).

Only when taking in the sights when wandering through a new city or wanting a closer look at something or someone with a cool outfit.

Never in combat though, you lose out on to much info about your surroundings during fights, that and it tends to give me a headache with some of the flashier abilities and attacks.

I dumb my character down for story content, (no buffs, no gear, no cp) and play first person through every story.

It's great because you don't have these buff colors and animations on the side of your screen, it's pretty immersive, made me see the love ZOS puts in some aspects of the story.

A shame you blast through it so easily.

Even though I play the single-player TES games exclusively in first. (except when taking screenshots)

It's all about whichever mode a game plays better in. MMOs (with their game mechanics, ground effects, etc) play better in 3rd. The TES games, on the other hand, have always had lousy 3rd-person animations/etc.

I am not my character; rather, I travel with her as an ethereal spirit.

That, too - in games I'm not the character, it's just a fancy doll/playing piece that I'm moving around on a fancy gameboard. I don't "immerse".

For me playing a game is like reading a book or watching a movie, just way more interactive. I'm not the protagonist, but I follow their story (I don't read books, which are written in first person).

As such I prefer to see my characters. I also spend a lot of time creating them, so not seeing them would feel like a waste.

As someone mentioned before, I too play the single player Elder Scrolls games in first person, but the only reason for that is that third-person-combat in them feels terrible to me. So even there, when I don't have to fight, I often switch to third person view.

    For more ES-like expierience.

However playing first person in ESO feels a bit wrong. The perspective is different than I remember from ES series, as if the world was fit for the 3rd person perspective here.

Also much harder to fight, avoid aoe and so on.

I just realized that I can't remember the last time I played anything in first-person. Does Strange Horticulture count? Guess not. Then it must have been literal years.
I use first person in ESO rarely to get a closer look at something, but then I find my field of view uncomfortably restricted. Let me see the whole map at once!!! :D

    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

First person. Except when I can't, like for mounts. Or for some group battles when my guildmates draft my character to fill a party.

It's my character who is on the ground. No drones for an overhead view, no seeing enemies behind rocks, no "cheating". In a game like Dragon Age: Origins where you/your character can actually do tactical positioning and order the actions of a party, third person is usually fantastic. That doesn't work really well with Elder Scrolls.

When I first started, yes. For a good 6 months, it was the only way I played.

Then I started PVPing and found it difficult to keep up. So I created a new character for PVP and started that character in 3rd person only. Still played my main and a handful of alts in 1st person for a while longer.

At some point, 3rd person became comfortable enough that I started playing every character in every environment in 3rd person. And I saw a ton of improvement in gameplay. Mechanics in dungeons I could never see before were suddenly visible.

I can't imagine playing in 1st person in this game. (Still a first person only player for the regular ES games though)
