Are character names important to you?

So, when I play RPGs of any sort the name of my character is a VERY important part of that. I will spend 30 minutes or more thinking up a name for a character. If I pick a name that doesn't fit the characters personality or the backstory I made for them I will delete the character and move on. I have has this problem with all the RPGs I've played and ESO is no different. Does anyone else get caught up on names as much as I do?

PS. What are some good serious necromancer names that don't sound evil or goofy?

ZOS has this "weird" policy of banning for 'lore friendly' names, don't they?

    No, they do not.

They punish LACK of creativity - not banning people for whatever. This is ToS violation, but tbh, for me it makes sense creativity-wise.

Abnur Tharn is no more. There is just one Naryu, Razum Dar, etc.

    So, yes, name is important.

Used to be. I used to agonize over my character names.

Then I'd finally get in game and see "IHate Pants" and "Pwnz Joonubz" and wonder why I bothered lol.

I spend a bit of time on names, trying to find ones that sound "fantasy-ish" without just being the main character of the last story I read. But I don't have 'backstories' or anything like that, that names have to match. Sometimes I'll try to fit the build/class/theme into the name, but not usually. Over the years I've built up a supply of names that I'll use in a new game if I need one.

And I'm not generally a fan of 'silly' names or ones that get around "name in use" or restriction by burying them in umlauts & other symbols. (that said, I did name my mule character Cargo Mistress. o:) I've also got her dressed in civilian laborer clothes, though.)

Pretty sure I've never used a name change (or had a forced one) in any game.

I can't imagine deleting a character over a name, though. (unless it was something like, the character was just created, I haven't actually done anything with it yet, and I accidentally made a typo)

Yes I prefer a character’s name to suit they way I build them, but there has to be flexibility, in case someone else had the same idea.

Or my mind is just TOO dirty. Nah, you can’t build them like that.

Yes, for me they are even more important than looks, for eg., I have a few characters whose voice, height, or some features I'm not entirely happy with but I won't go back to change, but I was unhappy with a name I'd change it right away.

yes they're important to me. Lore friendly specifically. All of my characters have first and last names canonly but in ESO and the other elder scrolls games I like naming them their first name + a title that suits them based on personality/vibe/skillset to personalize them a bit more.

I can meditate on designing a name for a new char for days or weeks sometimes. I really love character design and creative writing and stuff so it's very fun for me

The names matter a bit as I do give them backstories and such… however for most of them I use a name generator. I just look at a photo of them and generate names until I find one that fits.

I agree with this, these choices are too limiting. Names are important to me, but not so much so that I'm going to completely delete a character if I decide I want to make a change to their name. Physical appearance, personality, and so many other factors play into how I design a character and what makes me connect to them. Which isn't to say that they matter only a "little" either, a name can definitely shape who they are to me and where their personalities take them in life.

Sorry about the restrictive choices. It's my 2nd poll so I still not the best with them! But I only delete them if they are a brand new character. Old and above 50 characters I will not delete.

I am kind of backwards from that, I create a backstory and then create a name that fits with the story and personality. Only very rarely do I create the name first. I guess, I have to get to know them before I decide their name.

I like my characters names to match either their skilline or personality or even both, but I don't personally make full backstory's for them. Sometimes takes me a while to figure out a name though so much so that I will screenshot their sliders so I remember how I made them & have longer to think of a name haha.

Name, class clothing, image, pet if it fits that image, and weapons and skills .... all are a part of that identity.
I will use a skill that is not as good as another, because it fits THAT character... and the name is very much a part of the identity.

I build the character, and then interact with the world as that character ..... sometimes it becomes interesting....
My Sorcerer travels with Mirri, and even likes her chatter.... my Templar got rid of her 30 seconds after summoning, as while playing him, her chatter annoyed me.
So, I guess with name, I create a personality, and then assume that one with the character.

A name says a lot about the player who chooses it.

I remember in WoW our guild master refused membership to a player with a name something like "stabsyou" because he only wanted real sounding names in the guild. This player actually reported him for discrimination but of course nothing came from it. He just didn't fit into the image of the guild.

It's very important to me that I like the character's name and think it fits the character, but it only needs to look good to me. I do aim for names which aren't obviously out of place, but I'm not that strict on following the lore, if I like a name which isn't entirely lore accurate I'll still use it. Similarly I don't expect anyone else to notice or care what the names mean, they only need to be meaningful to me.
