I think it's annoying that we can't use the same name as someone else. In real life there are lots of people who have the same name. People name their children after themselves.

I mean, all my main characters are called Kronen, with the occasional accent thrown in. It's the name I used since I first started playing MMOs 20-odd years ago, and I wasn't sure what to call myself. Luckily, I had a can of Kronenbourg nearby for inspiration...

I have a few non-Kronens, but they are most assuredly alts, and I don't really spend a great deal of time on them or their names.

I don't do backstories, but I try to create names that sound lore-friendly or at least "fantasyish." I do have one character with a subtly humourous name, but it also sounds just like a proper Khajiiti name.

Yes, I have a certain name that I created when I was 13, I'm 26 now, and I used that name for every mmo I've played, Runescape, LOTRO,WoW, TERA, Guild Wars, and now ESO.

She has her own lore for the world I created for her, where she is the main character, when we enter a new mmo together, I research lore and make her fit in with it.

"Mystryia Avilasa" is the name, and I hold it very dear.

    Buffy’s name is. . . complicated.

As a young elf, her parents had trouble keeping clothes on her and were constantly trying to keep her from running around in the buff as it were. This was especially problematic in the vicinity of any pond, stream or waterfall. As they would say, ‘water makes her clothes fall off’. Indeed, her red-faced archery instructor had to coax her out of the water and back into her little buckskins numerous times when hunting near streams.

Her parents opted to choose an exotic name for her – and certainly no one in her birthplace of Bravil knew anyone else named Buffy.

I also had a say in the matter. As a fan of alliteration, Buffy the blond Bravilian bowgirl rather sang to me. And I preferred Buffy over other equally exotic (for Tamriel) alliterative names like Barbie or Bambi.

Buffy does not care for vampires and I do not deny the influence of another blonde from another time and world who shares an appetite and aptitude for vampire hunting.

Lastly, I figured that choosing what some might consider a silly name would keep me from taking my elf too seriously. In that regard, I fear I have failed miserably.

    I understand
I use Auldwulfe a LOT - used to use another, but noticed that when I got to a game, someone else would have already claimed Nahuris ...... which is odd, as it doesn't appear to be something people would just think of.

In all games I've played, character names have been of the utmost importance. I used to play a game where you could write said backstories, like a character sheet, and once I had enough characters, a story began to form. They are all a little bit of me and a me I wish I could be.

Not a name-zealot as the option I chose suggests, but it's pretty important.
All part of designing a character that is as unique to me as possible.
Just like the time I spend on the face and body, class choice and backstory, the name is equally important.

I LOVE names! Spent a huge amount of time naming all my children, and the meanings are of utmost importance, as well as the flow and sounds of names together.

I'm not quite as hung up on my character names, since they are obviously fictional, but I do like unique or interesting names.

My only Necro in ESO is called Luretannia, as it just felt right.

I like unique names, so no adding numbers or accents to differenciate between dozens of similars. I also like to come up with humorous backstories, so the names are occasionally ugly on purpose (plus, that means less chances of someone coming up with the same one). My ESO friends all know me by my @name, so it ended up becoming a sort of second identity to me (so much so I once had a dream in which I said "I'm Carcamongus", though, unfortunately, it didn't involve people in Nordic bathing towels doing /danceredguard). I do tell them this isn't my real name, as I'd have disowned my parents otherwise.

I've been using kargen for a character name going back to BBS days. It's a name I created by mistake. My first character in ESO I named Cairgen because I didn't want user name and character name to be the same. Recently I decided to start a character on the EU server and named him Cairgen. Had to change it though because there can as it turns out be only one Cairgen.
I have one character named Shirley I Jest and my Argonians have lore appropriate names. Most my other characters I spend quite a bit of time picking a Native American (usually Hopi) name for them I think will be appropriate.

    Kinda, Names matter a little
I usually name my characters according to the lore of the game that I am playing, and I also like to come up with background stories for them. I don't actually RP in the game, just in my mind sometimes (when questing, exploring, enjoying the lore, making decisions, etc). However, I don't think names are EVERYTHING. For me, the most important thing about MMOs is the experience of joining with other people and building good memories together; helping each other, overcoming challenges and stuff.

I will also spend a ridiculous amount of time not only creating my characters and getting the basics to their backstory, but naming them; to the point that as I'm trying to pick a name I get logged out by the system for being idle... Or my game just crashed, I don't know.
I found that names could definitely help in solidifying a character's story, even for names that aren't traditional for a particular culture or region if you get creative enough.

At first years ago and when ZOS gives me the opportunity to make a new character. Only using one account and have 18 already. “Names are everything and very important”. Some of my first character's or the original 8 have grown and changed overtime that their name doesn’t exactly fit anymore. Not paying ZOS to change their name and have never deleted a character so I guess “Kinda, Names matter a little” so where I am at.

    Stay safe :)

Names are important to me. I like to have most of my characters' names mean something or be lore-based as if they are real people in Tamriel. I can't do phrases and sayings that are funny or joke-based, with the exception of my two characters Kel Demall (WW), and Bowyn Aru (bosmer archer), because these are both puns and partially believable names.

Since @IDname appears near character name, names lost their importance sadly.

I still think characters names are importants though.

I personnally use firstnames for my secondary chars and the name of my @idname as a char name i'm @xarcs ingame, Xarc on forum, and my main characters are Xarc or variant with accent.

I did the same with an Imperial. Sagittam Ad Genu is simultaneously a joke name, a lore appropriate name and a reference to his backstory.

I also have a character whose name is reused from other games, but conveniently she's a Breton and it looks French so it fits.
