Levelling Undaunted for a new character - No you DO NOT have to be level 45 :)

OK, I'm sure the majority of you will already know all about the info that I am going to post here, but last night in Wayrest there was a bit of a heated discussion about, and a lot of false information posing as truth - so I will try to explain pretty simply.

The discussion started with one person simply asking "What level do I need to be to start levelling Undaunted" to which the majority of zone chat replied "45", "50" or "Veteran".
Ofc this just isn't true, so I said, "Whenever you like, from level 1 if you prefer"
Now this got me a whole tirade of abuse in zone chat AND via sweary PMs XD ....Some people right?!

Anyhow. To prove that I wasn't 'Lying', or 'Purposefully trying to mislead newbies' I will walk through the process of levelling undaunted from level 1 (or level 3 in fact, as I didn't feel like doing the Soul prison again just to make a char to prove a point).
So I made a new character just to run through this so I could remember how it went.

Anyhow, to begin unlocking it, I need to head to The Salted Wings Tavern, found in Vulkhel Guard. (Replace with your factions starting city, Mighty Modra in Daggerfall or Kailstig the Axe in Davons Watch).
Once there, head upstairs and find the Khajiit, Turuk Redclaws and speak with him. Cycle through his brief conversation until you get this message on your screen "Recruit of the Undaunted" - and you will then see that the Undaunted Skill-line becomes visible.
Turuk asks you to visit the Banished Cells Dungeon - don't worry, you don't need to complete the dungeon at all, just enter it - at which point you will immediately get the message to return to Turuk in Vulkhel guard.
Return to Turuk and hand in your quest. You then need to wait to be initiated (basically his undaunted friends poke fun at you for a minute). Talk to Turuk again and you will finish the quest.
At this point your Undaunted skill-line is fully unlocked. FULLY. You can start levelling right away.

One way to begin levelling the skill-line is to find Bolgrul in the Undaunted Enclave of Elden Root city (Alternatively Wayrest or Mournhold). Speak to him and he will give you a daily quest.
Each quest involves you heading to a random delve and completing a pretty basic set of tasks, usually along the lines of "Collect 6 of these and kill the Delve Boss"

This particular quest sent me to Mehrune's Spite in Northern Auridon. Head to the Delve, collect the sigils and kill the boss. Then head back to Bolgrul to hand in your quest.
Upon handing in you will get a pack of Undaunted Merits (Basically food and drinks and glyphs etc), but you'll also get 15 Undaunted points.
I presume 10 for the Quest, and 5 for completing the Delve for the 1st time.

These quests are daily quests, so only available once per day. But you can share them, so if you are grouped you can do more than 1.

It's certainly not as fast as doing no-death speed runs, but its a good way to level from early on, and get a head-start on the Undaunted skill line.
Also, if like me, you prefer to level up by doing dungeon groups, you'll also get a chunk of undaunted XP for every group dungeon you complete for the first time.
This means that you can very easily reach undaunted level 5, before you ever hit character level 45.

I hope that clears it up for people.
And for those of you yelling nonsense in zone chat - please do your research before spouting trash and 'Purposefully trying to mislead newbies'.

Thanks for posting this, as well as being a good guide for newer players it's also solved the mystery of how I have some Undaunted progress on characters I'm certain have never been into a group dungeon. I completely forgot about the dailies and that you could get progress without doing dungeons.

    Awesome guide!

This is a good way for low level characters or alts to get started working towards useful skills like Inner Fire (a taunt), Orbs (restores resources), and those resource buff passives that are so nice for end game builds.

So... instead of relying on the gazillion alleged 'guides' on YouTube and Reddit, you simply followed the instructions in the game... and discovered something those 'guide' publishers didn't know.

    Nice :)

I do the Undaunted Delve quests on characters i cant be bothered to do vet dungeons on. It's quick (usually) and makes more than enough money to cover mount training for the day.

So it really is worth opening the skill-line up early on, as otherwise you'll miss out entirely on that xp as it is not added retro-actively.
You can also start doing randoms as low as Level 10. You'll also get about a level's* worth of XP each day in the process.

*EDIT: By level, I mean character level as the Daily XP reward from the random + the actual dungeon clear. Makes doing RDF's a reasonable way to level an alt, too.

If you are referring to Undaunted Rep (the thing that advances this particular skill line) not being retroactive, you are incorrect. If you're referring to actual XP, you'll recieve that at the time of completion, regardless of your Undaunted affilitation.

Undaunted line advancement is based on Dungeon achievements, most of which are four man. There are a few that are solo/delve based (damage dealer, killing named enemies, etc) that will also give you rep. It's why you'll basically start at Rank 3 simply by walking through a delve door.

FWIW, they've never adjusted these for the x10 stat factor that took place years ago, so things like Greater Dungeon Blocker are much easier to obtain than they once were, simply for doing what you do otherwise.

If you've done any of these things prior to officially unlocking the line, you will get full back credit, just the same as if you'd run it for the very first time.

The only other thing I'd add is make sure you have Fighter's Guild unlocked, as it is not retroactive. You'll take a nice bite out of that skill line due to dungeons being infested by daedra and undead.

At launch, the Undaunted skill line was meant to be leveled just like the Mage and Fighters guild lines. Banished Cells and the other 2 first level dungeons were meant to be completed around level 13-14. Once completing Auridon and moving on to Grahtwood, you would complete Elden Root and the other level 2's. The delve dailies didn't exist back then.

Nothing has really changed other than the linear progression and you now have more options for dungeons early on. I queued solo for a random normal last night and got paired with a level 20 and level 26. It was Elden Root and me and the other DPS were CP450+ so it was fine.

I'm not sure why zone chat was so confused. Dungeon finder dungeons open up as level rewards very early on.

    Thanks Merlin, will remove it.
I was getting confused with Fighters guild I guess, and as I have always levelled every character in this way, I never had the opportunity to retroactively acquire any levels :)

No worries. Lol, just added the FG recommendation to my post. It's the only one that isn't retroactive, though I don't know why.

Even found lorebooks for MG are retroactive, but FG does not follow suit.

If you do as the OP suggests would a character still get the rewards at level 45? The rewards give two keys for the undaunted chests.

what people probably meant is: you can pick up pledges from lvl 45 onwards to level undaunted effectively (20 points for every vetHM pledge + 5 or 10 (not sure) for the Orc public dungeon daylie)

@Ozzymandius you'll still get the enclave invite in the mail at 45, even if you're already a member. This includes the free key.

just reached undaunted level 5 last night on my new toon at lvl40. Dont forget to do the "this one's on me" quest which is availible under lvl45. You also get undaunted points for the 1st time you complete a 4 man dungeon.

I have gotten good at this because I level my magica toons as healers (so I can actually get into dungeons) and It stinks that if I'm not leveling a templar(has shards) I dont have orbs until I get to this point (feel bad healing without orbs/shards)

I believe the Damage, Blocking and Healing achievments give Undaunted Rep. You can get those achieves in any Delve in the game. There is also named enemies, but I believe you have to complete the achievement, which is easier with first 3 I listed.

The Group Event Achievement used to help Undaunted. But not anymore.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Level 1. I start right off the bat leveling Undaunted. But usually it's level 3 by the time I get out of the starter zone. I have a level 44 character now that is already at Undaunted level 5.

Been that way forever. Too many thing that level 45 is where you can start because of the way the game is setup with the mail about pledges at level 45.

The undaunted reputation awards changed with update 33, I believe, and doing the quest for a dungeon gets you reputation that it previously did not. That quest is available to anyone, and is separate from the pledge. The change was to replace the achievement ones when they went account-wide.
