I want to play an MMO, not a CCG!

    Ummm ESO isn't a MMO

    Even the devs said so

You don't have to play it..it's one of those optional things

But we all can still be friends.

It's irrelevant what marketing says half the time, they say a lot of things to create sales, and that was said to bring in the Elder Scrolls fans of the single player rpg. Unfortunately we live in a time of make-believe-land to accommodate those that choose not to live in reality, "I think X is true, it must be!"... and it's not, from politics, people, & even video games.

    ESO is 100% a mmorpg.

That said, it will be interesting to see where this card game is next year. I wouldn't be surprised if the player to player pool will be so small that pve will eventually be the main option, with small updates mostly added to CS and crates.

Idk how presales are doing of course, but zos sure is investing a lot of time pushing news articles out. Almost two a week pop-up on eso news.

You know what you could be right about it being a 100% a mmo

That isn't what you need to ask yourself...

Ask yourself why marketing is running away like a Jack Rabbit on speed from the term MMO?

Saying it's because some of those other devs have given the hobby a bad name is too easy...

    Money.

    Theme park mmorpg.

Now ya got to sell it to the PvP crowd, PvP driven mmorpg with leadership from DAoC! We aren't a mmorpg to all you Elder Scroll rpg fans that don't like mmo's, "play as you want!" (just not end game or meta, that one is my favorite players always hark back to), hit every category of gamers possible, etc...sales, sales, sales.

Just another mmorpg but w/a Elder Scrolls skin to carry it through tough times.

Back to topic if ZOS doesn't do great on sales for this the card game update they may find themselves having to give this update for free, or at a low sale to just get players in it. Sewers all over again.

Okay by that logic Elden Ring and Skyrim are now MMO's I just added a small mod to both...literally just unzipped a file like a MMO update.

Tomorrow I'll play the MMO Doom eternal.

    100% RNG, no skill involved.

Same as Hearthstone and all the rest, you just need to know the cards and pray for luck, at "high" ranks you end up with who gets the card they want first.

Only the P2W is missing, but guess we will see some of it eventually too.

    Shame.

I agree that it's mainly RNG. That's normal for card games. But I'd say it's not 100%. I'd say it's skill based, since if you know the game really well, you'll generally win over players that don't know the game really well. At least, that's what it seems like at a glance.

It's also nothing like hearthstone and the rest. It's a deck builder party game but for 2 players, so you have no real choice as to what you put in your deck before a game begins. You don't get the enjoyment of messing with deck builds and designing different playstyles of gameplay; you get a combination of 4 using 8 choices, where you get to pick 2 that have cards already in a pool, and your opponent also gets access to the cards you chose.

Personally, I think it's fun. But it's not going to retain people's interest for long since you don't get to build your deck and strategize outside of the game like other card games. Since it lacks that interactive aspect of a card game, it probably won't be much more than a daily grind after 6 months.

I do like the idea of having tavern games as an RP element, but ToT is way too involved and confusing, and I had trouble enjoying it. I will give it another go, but I have more fun doing actual quests and story content than an involved card game in a tavern. Less involved tavern games (like that frog race in Skywatch) would liven up taverns more than this card game which takes you into a completely new interface and displays your account gamer tag so you are reminded that you are a player with an avatar instead of a character in a virtual world. The gamer tag is fine for PvP card games, but against NPCs I wish it just displayed your character name instead.

That is the case with every card game, isn’t it?

I am not in favour of Tales of Tribute, nor am I experienced in similar TCGs. But I mean, from UNO to Poker, from ToT to Gwent, from Pokemon to Magic the Gathering. Isnt the luck of the draw a deterministic factor?
Your comment reads like “who ever is lucky enough to draw the right card first has better chances!” yeah, I mean, it’s a card game after all. Or am I missing something?

Yeah, you're missing a few things.

It depends on the game, but "deck consistency" is an important consideration in many CCGs. Which is to say, how reliably the deck will produce the cards that the player needs for their strategy. (Usually this is achieved through including multiple copies of a needed card, "tutor," effects (where you search the deck for specific cards, drawing it's name from the Demonic Tutor card in M:TG), or filter effects (where you manipulate the likelihood of drawing the cards you want either by drawing additional cards, or by selectively removing cards from the top of your deck.)

You can't control random chance completely, however, (in most CCGs) you can create decks that will perform reliably. In a skill based CCG, the random chance factor is more about making the most of the options you have, not needing to get a specific card or the entire deck fails to function. (Those do exist, and inexperienced players will frequently build combo heavy decks that require considerable luck or will completely fail.)

Card games like that are all the same at their core.

People who like those types of games will be more likely to enjoy this new mini-game. The rest of us will not pay it much attention.

To be honest, as someone who literally has thousands of cards within arms reach as I type this... I'm not wild about ToT. There was a lot of potential in the game, but as it exists, even for CCG aficionados, it's not great.
