OnThaLoose✭✭✭Queen Ayrenn. I mean most of the ones you mentioned have already returned (from release), like Cadwell, Lyris, Sai, Sheo, and Meridia. One from release that has been missing since is Ayrenn. I guess her or Emeric. I Would have loved either coming back for High Isle. But nope I guess.1

(Because, as was said, Abnur isn't necessarily dead, although he sure expected it to be the most likely outcome when doing what he did.)

Death hasn't stopped ZOS from bringing back other characters that have been killed. I've sent Sai to his death a couple of times and he managed to be resurrected.2 -

Yeah. Sadly, ZOS should have laid down a story limitation early on that limited how characters could be reused across the content, particularly in a case where that character suffered death, dismemberment, or dementia.
Yeah, it is cool that people like favorites to return, but that really doesn't jive in an MMO where they claim order does not matter and everything happens in the order the player plays the content. ZOS does not go back and re-record old content, so a reunion in earlier content is awkward. Equally awkward is when everyone is looking for Sai Sahan and Mannimarco hid him in Senchal's main square.
(The above is what one of my characters, now deceased, saw. After a quick meeting with Abner, he ran off to Senchal to bag a couple of dragons before heading off to search for Sai. Happily, he found Sai not 20 feet from the wayshrine. Tried to tell Abner, but he would have nothing to do with that and insisted that he was in Coldharbor.)XBox EU/NA:@ElsonsoJannus

✭✭Honestly it feels like they bring back too many, which often leads to characters feeling shoehorned into the newest chapter/zone with flimsy reasons. I'm not saying they shouldn't bring some characters back, but if it doesn't happen organically within the story it just feels bizarrely out of place. They seem to bring the characters back for the sense of familiarity but from my experience as a player it just makes the world of Tamriel feel really small and unexciting.
A few examples of badly shoehorned characters: Lyris, Sai, and Eveli, who had no real business being in the locations and stories they were brought back for. This happens frequently with some other overused characters too like Lady Laurent and Stibbons, the Vanos siblings, Narsis Dren, Rigurt the Brash, etc. While these characters' antics were very entertaining at first, their recycled sketches have been so overused in so many locations now it starts to feel like you are playing the same story with a different coat of paint.
A big part of the sense of exploration is meeting new people and establishing new relationships, which does happen, but in the last few zones it feels like you are mostly tagging along on whatever overused character's quest and you have no major personal stakes in it. It would be refreshing to have a quest centered on us as a character for once. Like give Vaermina a chance to make good on her personal threat to us from the end of the Stormhaven questline; bring back some continuity from older unresolved questlines for the sense of familiarity, and then it would make sense to involve older characters.1
