"Earned by" Tooltips on Account-Wide Achievements

I am really sorry for all those people for whom the change is gamebreaking.

But for me, personally, it's not such a big deal, the AWA in its present form is OK and though I didn't ask for it I'm rather glad of it. Of course it should go live bug free, even if it means delay.

But when I hopped on PTS and had a look I discovered I rather liked that earned by info. :)
I was surprised to discover that some of my alts completed some achieves before my main, and no, it wasn't a result of cumulative achievements, it was a reminder - yes, indeed I went on thieveing sprees on that alt as the first one, and such.

So , with all due respect, I disagree and hope that earned by info remains.

So basically I won't be able to work for achievements on my main if another character reached that achievement. For achievements I've not yet finished all characters contribute meaning I can't earn those achievements on any character. Going for one achievement multiple times is gone.

So why have more than one character? Just open up all skills so a nightblade can use templar skills if they want and be done with it.

They are wrecking the way many of us play the game. Not wrecking it. Removing it. I see this as akin to just scrapping PvP, or removing trials.

    ^^^quoted for truth.

Any other games that are at least semi-open worldish and have player housing?
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

RIFT - not owned by Trion any more (now Gamigo I think), and I don't know how it plays any more (haven't touched it since 2016). But for the three years I played it, the game was fun, and the housing was SUPERLATIVE. I don't know how that is now either - I think my daughter still plays. I'll email her and ask.

So now I understand this a little better, thanks @silvereyes for the examples.

The nondeterministic behavior part is troubling. It seems like maybe the best way to do this is if you want your main character to get credit for everything then log into that character last.

I really appreciate all of you who have access to PTS letting the rest of us know this is coming our way so we can prepare.

I still have this nagging suspicion that the deluge of style pages is a key factor behind the performance problems we have now. I have no way to support my claim, other than this is something that they introduced a few years back with the outfit station and the number of style pages (including styles applied from motif page knowledge) increases constantly. Not only is this information that is part of our character’s data but the game has to be able to render all of those styles as well.

I wonder what would happen if they did a test and removed all styles applied by outfit station and only kept maybe the first 50 or so motifs learned in the character data. I don’t know if they could do such a thing but it would be interesting to know if performance was better.

Definitely, if people have crafting mules without much questing or combat activity, those would be best to do first. The logic being, any achievements that are easy enough for them to trip, your main(s) probably already have.

It’s harder if you have multiple alts that you actually use for questing or combat, since their combined activities could cause achievements to trip on any one of them.

This is a cross-post from the AwA PTS feedback thread.

This isn't a fix for all the issues on PTS, and it does nothing for those on console, but I've made an addon to hide "earned by" tooltips on multi-character account-wide achievements earned after U33 goes live.

So at least for those on PC, you won't need to fear loading your alts in the wrong order on launch day, since there won't be any partial credit given to anyone. Achievements that were completed before Update 33 will retain their "earned by" tooltips, as well as single-objective achievements earned after Update 33 launches.

I do use alts mostly for farming zone dailies, so I would still want the achievement to go to my main even if she did not do most of the work towards that achievement, if that were somehow the case.

For PvP I have two main alts so I would want the first one to have those, since she has fought many more battles.

I can see where there might be conflict, though. My main did a lot of exploring in Cyrodiil before the PvP alts. Still, if I log into her last she would get top priority for that.

This seems very convoluted, though. The character data exists on the servers, yet all this instead happens when we log in, and incrementally. I wish they could instead crunch the numbers and assign them before we log into our toons.

I don't like the earned by tooltip because it doesn't show all characters who earned it. IMO it should list all characters who earned it or none of them.

The primary reason why they are doing this is to reduce database bloat. Love it or hate it, we are all stuck with it going forward. If it noticeably improves performance, then I'm OK with it.

Except this explanation was only brought up by ZoS weeks after the fact and a huge amount backlash due to the obviously rushed implementation and removal of player created data/history that many rely on for their own personal progression.

They say that it will improve performance, but I am not sure how they can know this for sure or even test it. Have they made the code changes on a separate server that has 10 million or whatever number players all playing over the internet with latency and saw a performance improvement? They don’t have that capability. It’s the only way to know for sure.

The only “test” will be when we all log in after downloading the patch and start playing. If it ends up like all the changes to Cyro that happened but didn’t help, many people will be upset. I don’t want to sound so negative but I can’t get my hopes up for this one. Even if it does work, people will still be upset because they have lost something.

Yes, so basically if your main has 50% completed of an incremental achievement (say 'kill 100 beasts') and another character has 50% as well, then your account gets the achievement (credit goes to whomever you logged with last) and you can no longer work on the achievement on your main character. i.e. your main gets the achievement even though it hasn't in fact completed it.

To the OP: thank you for your post and examples, it was very insightful (in a sad way because of what a mess the new system will be)
