Gender equality for companions?

This whole thing could be alleviated if they just offered more companions period. We got two in an entire year last year. Why couldn't they give us two more with Fargrave/Deadlands? Looks like two per year will be the new normal. So two years from now maybe the genders will equal out. Just make more than two companions a year and broaden the pool so everyone is happy.

I think two per year would be okay if they had a lot more depth, like context-specific dialogue about quests, etc. But yeah, the way they are now I was sorta hoping they might have dropped another by now.

Maybe they're planning to retroactively flesh them out in the future so they don't want to add too many?

I really don't care, but it would be nice to have it set up in such a way people stop pointing this kind of stuff out. It's been.... grating to say the least.

Meh, I would rather they spend the time adding a new class/skill line/etc.

But if they want to keep making companions why stop at male and female? Where are the monsters?

I want a troll or a ghost following me around TBH and as they don't have dialog they would be perfect!

On the business side, the question would be what the players want more. After all the companions are a selling point for the chapters.

It will be interesting to see if the two current companions end up part of their respective DLC or sold vai the crown store separately.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who is not happy with this. I don't know WHY they opted to go with two females instead of a male/female offering... I'm loath to think it has anything to do with any political motivations... but I AM left with the question of WHY? Is it because they see more players using Mirri than Bastian and assumed that it was because of the gender? Instead, the reality of it being most people hate Bastian and his 'white knight' persona.

I use Mirri too, but would rather have a male companion, but Bastian is horrible for the above noted reason. Then when you add in the aspect of a possible 'romance option' down the road, this leaves even more people out in the cold. I hope they plan to address this at some point, hopefully sooner rather than later. I'd be happy if they added Companions in the Crown Store, there is no reason they couldn't have associated quests from Crown Store Companions too.

If @ZOS_Kevin could pass this along to the development team and let them know that they are really putting a lot of players out in the cold by not adding equal gender offerings. I would also remind them that FFXIV is full of cat-boys and bunny-boys for a reason!! ;)

Am I disappointed in the companion options this year?

    The short answer is yes.

The long answer is that I was hoping for more than 2 companions, maybe 4-6, and to see something new with the system all together. More quests for the ones we have and maybe some level of interaction with them beyond the stale handful of lines we get from them.

With only 4 companions, I don't see this as an issue. If we're looking at 5 years from now and we're at 25 female and 3 male, we can maybe look at that a bit more critically. But not just gender but class, race, etc as well. I'd also be confused if we have 7 sorc, 7 warden, 6 templar, 5 DK, 5 nightblade and 0 necromancers. However, we currently have 0 necromancers and it's not an issue as we only have 2 companions at the moment.

Perhaps they could offer companions with gender-neutral names and you could choose from either a male or female version at the beginning of the quest line? It doesn't seem like that much more work, and it would make a lot more people happy.

Twice the dialog, which I have to consider is probably the most expensive part of a companion.

But, they really don't have much to say now.

And yet they never shut up either.

Yes 2 females now well next time males again.

ESO is always very considered about everything. I think this one is a step to far and for me it does not feel wrong at all.

To be perfectly honest, I think if we got 2 companions this time around, both female, but no cats, the uproar would be a thousand times what we see in this thread. Cats Make Money. I'm pretty sure that's on a motivational poster on the walls at ZOS right beside Dragons = Cash.

I don’t care, really, since I’m sure they will slowly be adding more companions of all genders. But I’ve always been glad to see that, unlike some games, ESO has as many important female characters as it does. And I don’t remember seeing a call for more gender equality early in the game when the main story’s original characters had only one woman (Lyris), or two if your Vestige character was a woman, among the group you joined (the Prophet, Lyris, Tharn, and Sai) to fight the male baddie, Mannimarco. And among the leaders of the alliances, 2 out of 3 are male.

I grew up in the fifties and sixties, so I’m delighted to see so many strong female characters, both good and bad, in epic stories nowadays.

I dont care about the Gender.

What i do care about is them being overly concerned about property rights. If they complain, they will get parked.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

A variety of interesting characters, including variety in race and gender is ideal. I was a little surprised that both of the next companions will be female, but it doesn’t upset me. What does strike me as odd is that we have NO Altmer — not as an assistant, a companion, nor even a houseguest! I think that means one of next year’s companions should be a sexy male Altmer. <3

We're going to have more companions in the future, so I'm sure it will be generally even. It's just that we are still at the early stages of the system and they probably don't want to give us a male and a female companion every year. I wouldn't be surprised if next year we get two males.

This. Although for me I use Mirri all the time because her dialogue is pleasant, and I find Bastian's lines annoying.
It has nothing to do with her being female and him male, and I hope that's not what ZOS is thinking when they see more people using Mirri.

Look, if we're like 10 companions in and there's still only Bastian then I'll start thinking about this topic. But right now, it's way too early. There is hardly any basis for this and thus it comes across more like a quota than thoughtfulness about gender equality. It's literally only 1 release with no dudes, and there are only 2 ladies.

Gender equality in these kinds of systems should never be they always have to release an equal number of the genders. Rather, it should be about thoughtfulness to keep it balanced overall throughout the course of the product as a whole, barring important story reasons which should ofc always come first.

There are 10 races, we're only up to 4 so far. There's plenty of time where we get two every year, I don't care about their gender as long as their story telling matches their personality. Heck we could get Androgynous companions later on, maybe there's a very effeminate Altmer man or generic butch Nord woman the next time; I like to see a soft Orc woman who isn't brutish.
