I understand monetizing a product but there is one thing I can't understand. I don't mind cosmetic items only available in crown crates.
What I do mind is that there are no epic rewards in the game for even the hardest achievements or for long story lines, for defeating extremely difficult enemies, etc. There are none or so marginally few that they're not worth mentioning. It would be nice for new players starting out in ESO to see something cool and learn that you can get it if you play long enough/good enough, etc. It's an incentive to stay longer and once you achieve it, it's something to be proud of. It's a shame, it's a real shame, things like that used to set the mood for games.

This makes these items way too expensive for what they really are. I would have loved to have been able to purchase a couple of mounts and skins directly without spending hundreds of £ on odds that are rather stacked against me.
Is our buck not worth that much any more?

You do realize there is an Endeavor system, and nothing is gated behind crown gems?

Personally I wish they went back to a mandatory sub and offered the cosmetics and utilities in the crown store for more reasonable amounts but that would almost certainly lead to less players.

The fact remains, you can buy ANY crate item with endeavors, regardless of how you feel about it, so the entire premise of this thread is invalid.
I very rarely buy crates, I do however make a point to watch every twitch stream that gives one, so between that and the few crates I have bought or been gifted over the years, I have a grand total of about 900 gems now... from years of play. So quite honestly, I do not feel the endeavor system is slower at all. But then again, I don't jones over crate mounts / items and need them "right now" if I see one I want, will just wait until I collect some more gems or endeavors and grab it when it comes around next time.
There is literally nothing the crown crates offer that enhances my gameplay, other than the occasional outfit to help cover up my mismatched collection of armor, due to my inability to use motifs and desire to not have a guild tabard hanging over my outfit..

The premise of the topic is wanting to buy items directly, not through an intermediary system. You only seem to be talking about the latter, albeit a different one. When you go to a shop to buy potatoes, do you usually buy a crown crate with an abysmal chance of getting potatoes or spend let's say... one year saving up additional currency to afford a pound of said potatoes in the hope that by the time you saved enough they will be available in the store?
Of course you can live without potatoes, however, when you really want potatoes and are willing to pay money directly to get them, would you still prefer the crown crates route for an average of a few hundred dollars for a pound, way above market average price?
