I'm looking forward to new stories, adventures and curious about what Bethesda has in store for us in 2022. What about you and where do you think we're headed next year?

The only clue we have so far is the morphable event thing for next year, which'll start after New Life.

Spoilered, but the fragments are already in the collections menu
It's a gold spectral dragon. We've also seen the first morph is a gold scale skin that shows markings through kind of like the Maormer skin, but more obvious scales.

All of this suggests that Akatosh will be the focus (or have a heavy part in) the next story.

I am not convinced that the 2022 morphable pet is directly related to the next story line. Too obvious, and this time they seem to be doing extra work to hide it from data mining. Thus, my assumption is that anything that is data mined is not relevant to the upcoming story.

Personally, I think that next year will be another Oblivion plane story, with a foe we have never heard of, and it may not even be based on some zone in Tamriel. My reasoning for this is simply that Fargrave points in this direction. They went to extra effort to create a whole city outside of Tamriel that was not directly connected to the chapter or DLC zones. They could have put Fargrave anywhere in the Deadlands, but did not. Fargrave is practically built to be reused in other content.

We should get an announcement in January, but at least two of the chapters, maybe more, had credible spoilers or leaks the preceding December.

Year Long Story, zos trying to hype again standard two dungeon dlcs, chapter with trial, q4 zone (maybe with some end game activity but doubt). Another mini game like antiquities, a lot of perfrmance problems, some nice QoL, new shiny crate items, weak main story about another big bad trying to end the world because he/she is evil.
Sorry for cynical comment but at this point unless zos decide to do some major changes, i don't expect a lot. They were so afraid to take a risk and do something outside the box that I seriously doubt they will manage to shock us (like Rich promised that next year will be something nobody is expecting).

I'm gonna be silly and say they'll take us to the middle holds of Skyrim to celebrate Skyrim turning 11 that year... because 11-11-11??? And another dragon break!

Or, it'll be in Hammerfell. I'd wanna see more of the home of Redguards!

But most likely it's just gonna be another Daedric Prince wanting to conquer Nirn, like they've tried to do since Molag Bal started the trend.

Personally I want to see more Black Marsh. Though that may not be so likely so soon after Blackwood. My second choice would be the Telvanni lands.

The upcoming crown crates have a definite Craglorn bent to them. Combined with some of the things in the Jester Crates makes me wonder if maybe a Rihad/Tanith region of Hammerfell is coming.

The Redguards haven't had much love since Craglorn, but the poor Bretons and Bosmer haven't had any at all. The only region of High Rock not in the base game was full of Orcs, and all of Valenwood was covered in 2014. The only option I see there is a journey to the realm where Falinesti hides, and the long-awaited reveal of the Imga. And the werevultures. If you won't give me werecrocodiles, I at least want werevultures.
Lyranth will be trying to use the power of the Ambitions to elevate herself to prince-dom.

    That's khajiit's guess.

They can't do that, half the player base would want to help her.

That's been my running theory, and given how they've been slowly hinting at some sort of confrontation with Meridia, my guess is that next year, Lyranth mantles Meridia.

I would love to see something like a "Good" god/prince decide that Nirn is too sick to survive without his/her intervention leading to an "obey or be deemed unworthy" type of overreaching power play which threatens all of Tamriel. Then the players have to team up with one or two "Evil" god(s)/prince(s) to stop the out of control "Good" divinity. A restoring of balance if you will. As you can't see in the dark, nor can you see in a blinding light. I think that could be fun if done right. Just my 2 cents.

Hard to tell because ES6 is also in development so they most likely won't overlap the lore in ESO but we still don't even know alot about ES6.

I'm fairly confident they will deliver something good whatever they decide as I've found the story engaging in the last couple of chapters.

Better story in Elder Scrolls universe? Wrothgar have nice story based on region politics with no big bad trying to destroy the world, just intrigue that is not obvious from the start. Last couple years shows us that zos is not really good with those grand, "world is in danger" stories but smaller ones are much better. Those big stories lack relevance and often provide uninteresting solutions (anyone remember Sai Sahan returning from dead "just because"?)
Throw us in the middle of conflict between two clans, war of succession in smaller kingdom, fight gaisnt cult that is trying to frame our previous allies into something, give us more personal story with complex characters, where we need to choose between something, where player is left with this bittersweet feeling that "my choice was good but what if...". Some main stories tried to do that but failed.
Stories with some hard choices (we had choices in this game, now it is mostly "pick one dumb question option or do something"). Example from the latest chapter, why we need to tell Eveli about being a member of DB? What if dialogue option allow us to not say anything but later Eveli would find it out by herself which would create new dynamic where she isn't trusting us that much because we didn't tell her the truth?
Stories with some hard dialogues like the one with Sotha in CC where he basically mention that he and other gods (his friends) are a prisoners of their destiny, that dialogue was a small piece of art.
Stories with some memorable characters. If the most memorable character from year story is a comic relief like Arox then it means something is wrong.
TL;DR: major changes: more personal story, with not so obvious plot, some interesting conflict that is not related to "win against big bad that is bad because is bad", choices, no more dumb main character, more memorable side characters, setting with no good/bad sides but more grey, morally doubtful decisions where we gain and lose something with each possible ending. You know, something inspiring.
PS. please ZOS if you decide to kill a character, let it be dead. Killing a character only to show him/her in another expansion without explanation is a cheap move that force us to treat every death in story as something negligible (why should i care if it can return in any moment? We had a lot of that in the game)

So they raised the floor and lowered the ceiling. Except the ceiling has spikes in it now and the floor is also lava.

I agree with this. I am very tired of the world ending threats. Molag Bal should have been, and should still be, the one and only world ending threat during the time of Elder Scrolls Online.

Vivec was nice because it was local. We were dealing with something of epic importance, but no one outside of Morrowind cares even a skeever's butt about Vivec.

It was really Summerset that established the annual global crisis as a thing in this game.

The problem as I see it is that ZOS is trying to be too grand with the evil plots, and then trying each year to top the previous year. That is boring already, and not because they are missing the goal of topping the previous year's crisis.

The most interesting thing about the 2021 Year of Companions is companions and armory, not the drama with Mehrunes Dagon that everyone knows is going to fail.

... and you had to mention Sai Sahan and the whole discontinuity that ZOS has created in the ESO stories.

I just hope not anither daedric/divine plot. Would love to see something like Wrothgar or Hews Bane again. Political rivalies, a civil war, or maybe even a plot that continues the three-banner-war plot. Just not a save-the-world plot again. We had this in most of the so far released DLCs so far and I don't think any more of this is needed at the moment.

Mounts we can ride with our Companions must be coming soon, the option (toggle) is in settings right now (on console at least anyway). So I am thinking maybe a small add on to the the companion system.

Maybe a new playable race - Daedra. Having the Deadlands with Daedra not trying to kill us all the time opens up that possibility.

But what I really want is no big bad guy at all for story, in fact NO CONFLICT at all! Why not just introduce a new place to explore and that be it? What, boring you say? Nah, there can always be side quests. The main story could simply be to meet all the leaders or what not. Maybe do a few quests for them that are not major battles or anything at all.

I would also like an expansion to the Housing system. It REALLY needs one. Add farming to it (livestock as well as fruit/veges etc), bring in specialised housing (see my QOL thread for info on that - see my Sig), give us more options such as toggles for day/night in houses etc.

Problem is tho, no matter what we want or suggest wont matter, the next year's year long thing will already have been started on by now.

    What we know so far:
    - Magnus was mentioned a few times during the Deadlands DLC, some of his followers think he is deeply dissapointed with his creation and his Magna Ge created Mehrunes Dagon as a weapon to unmake the Mundus.
    - Lyranth stole the power of the Ambitions and Dagon's egonymic; later she mentioned that she's going on a path where no mortal or Daedra for that matter has gone before - this to me sounds like Aetherius
    - the gold spectral dragon and other mentions of Akatosh point out to something about Aetherius
    - Meridia (originally known as Merid-Nunda) is one of the Magna Ge who consorted with illicit spectra (Dagon?) and foretold the Breaking (whatever that may be) and attempted to prevent it

I think our next chapter will take place primarily in Aetherius, and maybe Skingrad as a Tamrielic base. Lyranth will either attempt to mantle another Et'Ada (which I don't think it happened before?) or she is working for someone, most likely Meridia I think. Our path to Aetherius will open most likely in Fargrave because that place is clearly set to be used in future content as well. If the Magnus story is true he will most likely adopt a "fine, I will do it myself" attitude after we just banished his weapon.

I'm lowkey hyped to find out in January.
