Yep, read them and write them, on occasion. ;)

While brevity is the soul of wit, it's not always appropriate in an informative context, helpful in an explanation, or useful for convincing others in an opinion-based argument. Also, brevity tends to read as abruptness or rudeness in text, and as we know, it's very hard to read "tone" from text.

Because of the difficulty of reading tone from dry text, it's often helpful to write, explain, and debate the way we speak. I'm a teacher, so I usually default to overexplaining. Also, since I write long forum posts, I figure it behooves me to read other long posts as well.

Thesis statements, TL;DRs, and proper punctuation help.

Next time my students ask "Why do we have to learn thesis statements?" I guess I've got another, "You'd be surprised how many times I use this while discussing video games."

It depends. Interest in the topic plays a big part in this. I will read every single comment at least once in a thread that I am interested in. Length of OP or responses has no bearing if I read, but when I read it. I like to save longer ones for breakfast, after work or during lunch break. Also, long forum posts make good reading material during potty time.

By and large no, but if the subject is of particular interest to me then I might, whereas I will never follow any topic on a discussion forum that begins with nothing else but a video link under any circumstances.

I read only the beginnings and then I'm guilty of misunderstanding what the OP was about, so I cannot complain if someone does the same to my post. Also all of my long posts don't get any replies :p

I look at it this way. If they cannot grab my attention and keep it then it is just rambling and not worth reading. I expect the developers to look at it the same way. They do not want to fall asleep at their desk.

Most long messages are not organized or well thought out. They often have long preambles that seem to try to add context but tend to be unimportant.

Depends on how interested I am in the topic, and how good of a writer the poster is.

If it is a wall of text with poor grammar, lack of punctuation, and incoherent thoughts then I give up pretty quickly.

I scan them but don't read every word. Most of the really long posts, even if they are well formatted, could be summed up in a paragraph or two.

Broadly no, but that's more because people just don't know how to write concisely or in an engaging way. Usually if a text is broken up into bite-sized paragraphs though I'll just read through it anyway, but if it's a massive block I pass.

I feel an inability to read & digest longer material is a problem of the modern times and growing too accustomed to short blurbs of data, whether from a web search, a text message, online videos, etc.

As for me, yes, I'll definitely read a long message if the content is insightful and interesting. When providing an analysis of a problem a longer post might be necessary to provide contextual information. This can be prefaced with a TLDR for those that want the summary early on.

I do read long posts most of the time, if they are well formatted and structured. Like if I notice there is no thought on the paragraphs or there is no paragraphs, I skip. But if the post is skimmable, I tend to skim it and read it. A well formatted and written text is enjoyable to me, no matter the length.

For me, reading is my preferred medium, so I'm more inclined to read. Text is always silent and easy to pause and continue. I do not need to carry a headset nor do I have to bother others with my consumption of media.

I also like to produce text. I do it a lot, be it for studies (master's thesis, essays etc) or for fun. Every time I write, I consider it to be a practice.

Tl;dr: I enjoy text, but skip if the text is not made with care.

No matter how long it is I will read every word of it because I want to make sure I get the entire meaning of what they are saying. Some who post have English as a second or even third language and for me they are some of the most interesting ones to read.

When I write replies or even posts I try to make sure I get my point across, state my opinion in a concise manner or provide as much detailed information as I can. All in order to prevent confusion and a lot of unproductive back and forth comments.

I will but usually only when I've time.
If I'm just poking thru threads but don't have a ton of time and find a looong one I would like to read I'll come back to it later when I've more time.

Also formatting matters too, at least broken up with some paragraphs so it's easier to digest. I'm not going to read a giant alphabet blob.

I can obviously tell if I agree with the post early on at the beginning of it and decide if I want to read further. Most of the time if its a forum post, the topic/opinion being talked about is in the title.

I would say, honestly, a lawyer is going to know far better than a software developer, an engineering professor, and pretty much anyone else exactly what is "comprehensive and concise." Having worked with many of them on various contracts and agreements over the years, I have learned to write professionally more and more like one. In legal matters, there is only the exact right amount of words. Nothing left out, nothing ambiguous, nothing extra that's conflicting.

Not sure what lawyers you are hanging out with but there is a reason they endorse "baffle them with ***" lawyers are the antithesis of concise. A lawyer will take a simple statement and turn it into a page and a half of boiler plate.

A lawyer will also RARELY give you a straight answer. It is an effect of their work where they do everyone in their power to not lock themselves into a specific answer, they will play both sides and run you around until you are exhausted and concede.

Not really, I do a form of speed reading and look for keywords then if see certain things may stop to read the whole thing, if see other things that tell me the post is just a rat or other stuff just skip over.

sorry for errors and typos assume most speed read when it comes to longer posts and such
