Shouldn't Kwama be Chitinous creatures?

Spiders are also chitinous creatures. The only thing I've found that work for the endeavor are mudcrabs and those things by the ocean in Stonefalls. (can't remember what they called, but they look like huge mutated mudcrabs)

For the record, in real life, all insects, spiders, scorpions, centipedes and crustaceans have chitin exoskeletons and are therefore chitinous.

Has anyone made a list of what does count for each type of endeavour?

The reason Kwama don't count as "chitinous creatures" is because they are already considered "insectoid", which is silly as insects have carapaces made of chitin.

That makes me wonder if Guars are considered reptiles or bird-like (like the dinosaurs).

ZOS needs a zoologist on their team.

Honestly with the way they label these things and what they obviously are. It seems like they went the most easiest route and gave every creature in the game 1 label and left it at that. Even though they obviously don't all fall into just 1 category. And because of the fact that their definitions of what is and isnt something is so vague. Its going to be a headache every time someone new discovers how lazy the labeling system is for Endeavors.

You'd think that insects (such as wasps) would count. Nope. You'd think that Nix Hounds should count. Also nope.

Ended up just killing five mudcrabs to get that one.
This creature called a songbird. What a devious creation! This winged nuisance erodes sanity with its incessant chirping. What a brilliant form of torture!

The person at ZOS who put these "kill x of y-creature" endevors together is not very good at biology, unfortunately. Not only wasps, kwama etc. don't count as "chitinous" (even while droping chitin within the game LOL). There was also endevor asking us to kill "lizzards" and Death Hoppers got counted towards it despite being quite obviously amphibian. If they are not going to follow reality (or common sense) with these, there should be list of enemies which count in endevor's description.

I don't even expect them to follow reality, but at the very least they should follow some of the most significant parts of their own lore.

Kwama farming is very important to Dunmer lore, and there are several of mines and such in the game including entire quests revolving around them. Of all the endeavors to get right, you'd think they'd at least get their major lore details right

It's because ESO ruined kwama (especially scribs) and turned them into gross arachnids.

I'll never forgive ZOS for what they did to my little chitinous bois

    i2lk4pe.png

Arachnids are also chitinous bois. Crabs are arachnids after all.

The lables for these endeavors are very very unclear. All sorts of enemies are not considered "Beasts" either. Only mammals, however Trolls which look like mammals are not considered beasts. I would argue any dangerous animal is a beast.

Crabs are not arachnids but crustaceans, just FYI. They are all (insects, arachnids, crustaceans, and more) arthropods which all share many features, including an exoskeleton and chitinous cuticle.
(Edit: I was too quick to correct! I am glad that others caught this too and that I’m not the only one who cares about these distinctions!)

Of course that’s Earth’s creatures and I’m okay with Tamriel’s being different! In fact, it’s better if they are, not that we need the theoretical biology of all of them, but giant arthropods would need a completely different body plan for support, movement, circulation and oxygenation, etc. — or it could be magic. :)
(Edit: But as others have pointed out, as long as you’re using the Earth terminology, yes, the discrepancies can be confusing! Are draugr crustaceans? Maybe the term “chitinous creatures” should be changed to “crustaceans.”)

Now when Mirri told me that as far as she was concerned, ALL snakes were poisonous, in my mind I told her, “Well, then just don’t eat them. Now if we come upon a venomous snake, then we’ll have to be careful not to be bitten.”

Mirri glowers and rapport goes down.

But as for kwama, they’ve always seemed insectoid to me, including in ESO, rather like a bee or ant colony. I empathize with not liking how something was changed although some changes in the kwama don’t bother me personally, perhaps because it’s been too long since I played TES III…

But don’t dis my lovely spiders! There really is nothing gross about them, not in reality anyway. They are very clean and very very few wouldn’t much rather run and hide than bite you! Spiders are beautiful misunderstood creatures.

Guars are domesticated fowl, as they drop poultry when killed.

No, they don't. Guar and Pony Guar drop White Meat-- pork, or something pork-like. Poultry is Poultry, not White Meat.

Now, Bantam Guar might drop Poultry, but they aren't the same things as Guar.

I think these should count (though not 100% certain: mudcrabs, duneracer, dreugh, chaurus, queen of the reef? On the other hand beetles, assassin beatles, kwamma don't seem to count. Not sure about scorpions or nix-hounds.

I tried kwarma and those fiery versions of thunderbugs, I forget what they’re called, but nope, don’t count. I tried actual thunderbugs and assassin beetles, also nope. Forgot that mudcrabs counted, and just went to Blackreach to kill some chorus creatures because I know for sure those do count!

I wondered the same thing as OP. Tried shalks and kwama with no luck before combat with dreugh and mudcrabs gave me the endeavor. Didn't get to test spiders, scorpions, assassin beetles. Didn't test dunerippers either but, based on a post above, it seems like they count. According to BenevolentBowd's website, yaghra also count.

Assassin Beetles do not count. I would assume that Thunderbugs also do not count.

Just had an amusing discovery in this regard. There's the achievement "Chitin Accumulator" for collecting "trophies from all the chitinous creatures of Tamriel." Now, I just got the achievement because I killed a thunderbug and it dropped the razor-edged mandible, the last one I needed. So, is the thunderbug chitinous? According to the achievement, yes; according to today's endeavor to kill 10 chitinous creatures, no.

And it's not likely to get fixed. Every enemy seems to get just one category label applied to it, even if there are multiple ones that would seem to apply (like "insect" and "chitinous"; or "humanoid" or "vampire" or "undead" or... etc). So some enemies will count for one, but not the other. It's just the way it is.

Sure but even if that's the case they should move Kwama from insect to Chitinous because it's literally a major lore point. This is like Dragons not counting for flying creatures but instead lizards.

Sure. But maybe that's how it is in Nirn...meanwhile Kwama are low-key one of the most important creatures in lore with several of their mines in the game. And they are harvested for stuff like their eggs and chitin. So not including them is a bit like including Dragons as reptiles while you have a category for killing shouting foes where dragons didn't count. Dragons shouts are iconic.
