Why is there almost nobody using Bastian?

✭✭It depends on which character I'm in the mood to play.
My Dunmeri characters use Mirri, my humans use Bastian as a companion. I'm generally spending more time with my human characters though, so it's mostly Bastian for me.0 -

✭✭Because Mirri doesn't mind me stealing and Bastian has the face of Nicolas from the Thieves Guild quests.So they raised the floor and lowered the ceiling. Except the ceiling has spikes in it now and the floor is also lava.4 -

✭✭✭✭✭It's annoying that Bastian doesn't like to see me stealing, but I catch bugs a lot more frequently than I find thieves troves. And I don't keep Bastian out unless I'm actively questing with him, so he never sees me stealing from containers in town.
I started to interact with a thieves trove, realized I had Bastian out, and immediately veered away before taking anything; I'm not sure if the contents window even popped up. Bastian didn't say anything, and I got no message about a rapport decrease.
On the other hand, I started to catch a butterfly, realized I had Mirri out, and immediately veered away before taking anything. Mirri didn't care that I didn't take anything; she still complained and gave me a rapport decrease just for touching the butterfly.I've fought mudcrabs more fearsome than me!0 -
InaMoonlight✭✭✭✭✭As I mainly use Bastian as a tank I usually only pull him out at bosses. Mirri is set up to deal with trash mobs, and doesn't freak out if I "accidentally" steal anything, so she's the one walking the miles

tripp✭✭✭I am now, since Mirri is at level 20. Didn't really like the guy at first, but he automatically spots heavy sacks and with the right kit and proper equipment can tank stuff properly. Mostly pull him out if a boss has a lot of annoying adds with tons of stuns/staggers/knockdowns that make tanking it a pain in the backside. Stuff like Nilthog goes down 3, maybe 4 times as fast.big, green, buff, but surprisingly not the Hulk0 -

✭✭✭✭I use Bastian for my characters who never thieve, I use Mirri for characters who can refrain from grabbing bugs (harder than you might think).Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.***Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis0 -

✭✭✭I'm slowly levelling Mirri, I find Bastian really annoying BUT I think as other people have said that Bastian will make a better tank, so I suspect I may use him more when I actually get around to levelling him.
I like to solo dungeons when I'm bored and Mirri has proved enough of a distraction to help me do a few that I haven't managed before, I'm hoping Bastian may help with doing some more!

This is really bothering me about the character. Everything about him except his name and face says Breton.[Lie] Of course! I don't even worship Daedra!6 -

She only complains about torchbugs and butterflies.
Those are the most visible certainly, but anything else is fair game.PC NA0 -

As far as I can tell, there are alot of Bastians around. Many Mirris too, and more than Bastians perhaps, but not 9 out of 10.0 -

I use Bastian only but have it off most of the time, mainly because I can't bear having "something" sticking to me like glue (companions, pets, NPCs, Daedrics...) but also because Bastian reacts negative to several actions, out of which several I do regularly (typically stealing thief throves). Seriously, like others Sammy finds the Breton/Confused Imperial’s passive not very useful.

Surveys = bastian as this one must bat every butterfly and torchbug and if there's a thieves trove bastian has a quick break

You don't have him on quick slot? It doesn't remove the waiting time, but at least, it's a simple click to turn it on and click to turn it off.
