Probably considering they can be pretty helpful . Tbh I feel the whole point of em is to make the paid content feel more padded to sell more of said dlc/chapters. There would be no real reason to add them to the store. It would be just weird paying for something you have to grind rep and get gear and do there quests.

I suspect that when Blackwood is rebranded as DLC companions will be split out and sold seperately like the necromancer and warden classes. (Although I don't think anything was taken out of Summerset and Greymoor, so maybe not.)

When/if that happens, or if new companions are sold in the crown store I think it depends on how it's done. If it's like buying Blackwood where the purchase gives you the ability to gain a companion but you have to do a quest to unlock them and then level them up, gear them etc. etc. then it's basically a way of buying new content and no different from the current companions system or something like dungeon DLC where doing the dungeon can give you new set gear.

If it's possible to buy a fully levelled and geared companion (or buy the companion, then buy the level upgrade and a set of gear seperately) that would be pay to win. If they do that I hope it's like the sky shard packs where you have to do it manually once with that companion before getting the option to pay to skip the process.

There is no need for paid companions - we will get them regulary with chapters (and maybe with Q4 dlcs) and having them makes players to want more crown costumes, style or mounts. Also every new companion will be a big thing, so I can imagine that some people will pay for whole chapter just for this new cool companion.

To consider companions pay to win, the player buying them must be pretty incompetent. There is absolutely no need for a companion in all situations of the game. You can do everything on your own, you could since Tamriel Unlimited launched.
So they have basically no efficiency impact, in fact if I would use one, it would propably just get into my way and annoy me so much till I deactivate it.

To be "pay to win" the Companion needs to offer something of tangible benefit and advantage that is not available in the game.

I assume they would not have put these in the game if they could not be monetized, but unless they sell a Companion with some special ability, I can't see a path to "Pay to Win" for them.

My guess is that they will be in the Crown Store and Crown Crates in far more quantity than otherwise. They will have different stories, different rapport triggers, different endlessly repeated inane comments, and be a different class than the others. They will not do anything special.

I should qualify this by saying that they won't be any worse than already existing "P2W-ish" stuff.

The existing companions are so weak they're only marginally useful.

Now... if ZOS started adding companions that did damage competitive with a player, that would be P2W (regardless whether it was just in the crown store or part of a DLC), but the existing framework doesn't do enough to really risk P2W.

To be clear if they added them at a cost.

I'm sort of leaning with the majority though, this is PvE only, no big.

Yes. Because they give additional permanent buffs to your character when maxed that don't require having them out to benefit from.

Which I think your poll is a bit leading because it doesn't include that information and it's not something people think about really. So I think a lot of people are just thinking of like using them in dungeons

The buffs are even more useless than the companions themselves.

You can still complete every bit of ESO content without a companion so they are not P2W. They might allow some players to be able to avoid grouping up with others but that is not the same as you have to have a companion or you will not be able to complete content.

Don't think they will hit the crown store till at least after the next Chapter gets released.

Why? Because that would allow people to get a companion without buying Blackwood, quite a few people decided to buy the chapter once they realized they could make gold off companion gear sales.

While the prices of companion gear have dropped off quite a bit you can still sell plenty of blue gear for over 50K - 100K and purple gear is still high value in a lot of the popular traits. That's a hell of a lot more lucrative than most player sets in the game sales wise.


Then again they could always stipulate that you need Blackwood to buy them or just place there starter quests in Blackwood to force you to buy the chapter anyway.

My point is they are not going to separate the selling point of the chapter for a lot of people for awhile just like they did with buying the new classes until they are certain they got as many people as possible to buy the chapter.
