Provisioning Crafting Station now Alphabetical

doright
doright
✭✭✭
The recipes at the provisioning station used to be sorted level now they are sorted alphabetically (within the subdivisions.)
I changed two things this week - the update, and added Azurah mod.
I tried turning off the Azurah mod but alpha sort remained.
Have others noticed this?

What would be nice is alpha/level sort be user select-able. Even better would an additional option to alpha sort across all receipes.

Yes. It's going to slow me down when I restock for daily writs as my characters are spread across different provisioning levels, and I don't remember all the recipe names.

I switch on "Quest Only" which only shows the recipe for the Provisioning Daily, then bulk craft 100 of each food and drink for the 4 day cycle; switch off "Quest Only" after that.

It's a 3 day cycle, but the slow part for me is just getting to the cooking fire, so I prefer to make all 3 days of the cycles worth of food/drink at one visit. Yes, because they do stack, it doesn't come up that often.

Thanks for mentioning this, thought it was just me but hadn't got around to tweaking any add-ons to see if any was responsible.

The change, regardless of source, makes sense in a way but I'm still very much conditioned to looking down the list according to item level so adjustment to the new sort order is still somewhat jarring.

The change to the sort order was an intentional change in the game's UI (which was unfortunately missed in the patch notes).

This addon will sort the recipes by level, for people who prefer level order over alphabetical order:
    https://www.esoui.com/downloads/info3100.html

Prior to Update 30 (Blackwood), recipes at a provisioning crafting station were sorted by index, which resulted in the original recipes being grouped by level; level 1 recipes at the top of each category and CP 150 recipes at the bottom. In Update 30, they are now sorted by name.

I consider this change to be a usability regression. The names of the food and drinks in this game are just decorative fluff that don't tell you anything about the item itself. The most important piece of information is the level.
    • When I want to craft a food or drink for use, within each category, the only thing that I really care about is the level, since all recipes within a category at the same level share the same stats. I don't think, "I need to craft a Melon-Baked Parmesan Pork"; I instead think, "I need a craft a max-level Health/Magicka food". So I open the category for blue Health/Magicka foods and scroll to the bottom for the max level ones and pick one: I really don't care about which of the three foods with identical stats I craft, nor do I remember off the top of my head what their names are.

Are the traits alphabetical now? That would have been an even better first change.

Making this a setting to check on or off would have been the best approach to sorting the recipes.

Only because it is forced. Allowing either would be good. I have spent a great deal of time in the past trying to find a recipe sorted by level and such.

Yep, noticed when I was making some new furniture and found L before M instead of at the end of the list.
This is a big help for finding furnishings, but yeah maybe not so much in the food and drink department.
Now if we could just get the style stones alphabetised that would really be something!

I agree, although if they did that I'd like them to keep the racial styles at the top of the list because the materials are much cheaper and easier to get so I always use them for daily crafting.

But for the rest alphabetical order would be extremely helpful. I installed Votan's Crafting Quick Access specifically for this purpose. When I want to craft in a style other than the racial ones it's so much easier to find it in an alphabetical list than trying to remember roughly when it was added to the game and estimate where that would put it in the list, or looking through them all to find it.

I just noticed this in the provisioning station on console and thought it was another bug at first. So this is intentional? But why?
Please give us back at least the option to sort it by level; I craft food by matching character level, not by what letter the name should start with today.

It should have been an option.

I am leveling several characters on the PC now and it is a pain to find the best food to craft now. I did wish for an alphabetical option in the past, but I want both (toggled) not one or the other.

Add the same for Styles please too. Those are incredibly hard to find for those of us who have not been playing that long.

    Alphabetical Order really sucks.
I just wasted a bunch of mats because I'm in the habit of making the higher level recipes for easy gold.
I really don't want to pick through, clicking on every single recipe to find the ones that give me 5 gold.

On the other hand, for those who don't use mods to do writs and master writs, I'm sure the alphabetical ordering is very nice.

But even then, I find more need in seeing the recipes in order of level.

As someone who does not use add-ons, and does dailies on 18 characters every day... the alphabetical order sucks! The quests are highlighted, and easy to navigate to, but checking for the highest level recipes is now a total pain. There is no way to check the level without sorting through every single recipe in every list.

This was a bad change, and there are only two ways to solve it:
1: Change it back to low-high recipe sorting. (or the option to)
2: Give the highest recipe levels a character can make a different color, so they are highlighted and easy to find.

The alphabetical order makes absolutely no sense, and I have no idea who would even want that.

I am not sure why they didn't add some sorting options instead of just making one the way things must always be. Fortunately some of the problem goes away when you level Provisioning, but it is still a serious pain.

My guess is that one of them that plays this game was asked by a guild mate or buyer to make them a specific food item that wasn't CP160. They had trouble finding it and thought "This would be so much easier to find specific recipes if it was alphabetical order," and then ZOS changed it thinking it would help the playerbase, especially since if you need an item for a quest it is now already highlighted without the need to search.

I think they didn't consider the other ways people use it when making the change that benefit more greatly by having level order, e.g. looking for any level 25 recipe for their alt that gives it health and stamina; or seeing which one you have the most ingredients to make at the highest level currently unlocked by you when powerleveling.

People in game don't actually look for very specific non-delicacy recipes they don't have a quest for that often. They mostly look by level. And the delicacy lists are too short for either sorting method to matter that much.

My guess, someone at ZOS felt "clever" while utterly failing to see that it would be inconvenient for players.

The thing is, the original order was not sort-by-level. It was not sorted at all in any way.

Which meant that recipes just appeared in the order in which they appear in the item database (this is what I meant by "index order" in my earlier post). It just so happens that for the original base-game recipes, the order in which recipes appeared in the item database was by their level. With the old system, any new recipes that are added to the game just appear at the end of the list. So, for example, the Witches Festival recipes appear before the New Life Festival recipes, since the latter were added to the game later.

So, the old "sort order" didn't make any sense, since, well, there was no explicit sort order. And, according to the ZOS dev that I had complained to about all this, this was indeed the reason it was changed. So, yea, I understand the change and I can see why they made it.

What I don't agree with is their choice of sort order, because, as I noted in my post earlier, names are just decorative fluff and don't mean anything. They should've sorted by level, rather than name.

It is very useful when you are looking for a specific recipe. It is a pain when you are trying to level a character. So allow it to be toggled. The old grouping had problems as well. Finding a specific recipe was quite difficult. It was not ideal either.

Should be sorted by level first, then name. That leaves the original order alone for normal recipes, because people only care about level for those, but the specialty ones will be a nice neat alphabetical list because they're all level 1.

It's such an annoying change. My characters all used to use the last blue recipe they'd learned of the right type as running around food, nice and easy and quick and nothing to remember. Now I have to hunt for one I can use whenever I want to use a character.
