Okay, with Chaucer you have a point, he lived two hundred and fiftyish years before Shakespeare, and wrote the first true English books, but most of the Literature after him was just translations of stuff going on abroad. There was some genuine english literature written, but most of it has either been rewritten or lost. Nearly as old as English gets? Um... No. Try Chaucer or even the Saga of Beowulf.
