Exactly my thoughts.
🤨
They each have their own backstories and personalities, I would say they are RP ready right out of the gate...
Only if you want to RP with Mirri and Bastian. Out of that, is totally limited.
With more companions on the way...
If you want a "companion" with a backstory that you help make then play with a friend.
That's kind of what companions are designed to encourage you to do

The thing is that you already have other players, specially in RP enviroments. Customizable companions would add extra characters and utility to the RP. Like, if your character is a necromancee, having a companion with a skeleton polymorph following around, even without interaction, it just adds a lot! But with this fixed companions, even if you were to overlook their "personalities" and chatter, you cannot do that.
The problem I see with them is that they arent useful for combat. The other aspect of the game they could be useful to is RP/story. Limiting their customization hurts, imo, their abbility to be integrated into that game aspect also.
Just imagine, you took all of the players [...] doubled that number. You think the lag now is unplayable, this would kill the game until quantum computers are invented because there's no amount of CPUs that could run the number of calculations (with the current game performance) it would take[.]

We're just going to have different perspectives on this.
- You'd rather have a blank slate to project a character and story onto.
- I'd rather have the companion with an in-depth story & dialogue that I discover, like Serana, or a companion from Fallout 4, or a Bioware game
(What I meant by "Encourage" is that Companions are designed to eventually be outmoded by other players - especially in group content - as to encourage you to play with other people)
