Are Companions useful to you?

How are they useful if they can't help with the difficult content? Noone's around to help in dead zones at dead times and there are zone bosses that are still a pain to solo (Murkmire tree, Walks, that still needs it's healing nerfed) and Harrowstorms.

The devs told us they're supposed to help with these things but they die to trash mobs.

    Wait a minute...
I could understand polls like this in the PTS subforum.
Companions are not yet released. Can you tell how many Companion bugs would be fixed and not fixed?
Have you collected all 10 slots of Companions gear in 3 weights? Where do you store it?
Had you counted number of quotes in Companions dialogues?
How do you think is that number enough for them not to be annoying?
How much time it took you to level up both to level 20? Had this Guilds skilllines unlocked? How? Does not work for me yet.
How much time you spent to maximize rapport for both?
Well.. i don't get it. Maybe let U30 happen first, then we start discussing the real things? No offense.
It is 4 weeks till Chapter release. Many minor or even several big tweaks might be made till June.

Dear players, who had already voted: i strongly hope you have really tested Companions very thoroughly on PTS.

Bastian is not an independent thing running around killing things for you. He is one of your tools that you can use in the dungeon, and he is not a "set-it-and-forget-it" tool. The companions have to be managed, like everything else in your combat.

Played properly, they will be able to tank dungeon bosses.

I am waiting to see if ZOS buffs their survivability, as this will help a lot with people learning how to manage them.

As a tank main, the extra DPS could be useful, but a bit of testing showed me that my armor does more to help me than the companions do. At least the quests and story exist...

So, how long will it take to level a companion?

Depends on what you mean by level.
The only way to level fighters guild is turn in fighters guild daily quests. Same with mages. For undaunted the only thing that levels is Balrog daily delves.

For companion leveling all experience sources works and they recieve around 1/6 or 1/7 of what the player does from my experience.

Also when talking about leveling you have to consider gear. Which appears to be a semi rare world drop when companions are out. I've played with them every day on test for a couple hours a day since release and I have not found a purple yet. I suspect if they are tradeable, gear in certain traits are going to go for more then Gold jewelry.

Personally I'm not really looking forward to them at all.

Mostly I'm dreading seeing yet more flipping critters, creatures, and dopey NPCs derping around the world, following players at a janky and distracting pace. Companions are gonna be just as annoying as (if not more than) seeing Tythis or Nuzimeh trailing behind players who run around with them out. Luckily the house cat versions of those two appealed to most of the folks who do that I guess, because I see this a lot less these days; and those are pet size, so I find em a lot less bothersome. But I'm like 70% petty pet peeves by volume, so that's mostly a "me problem" I suppose. :D

But I am kinda surprised how few people seem to recognize Companions' usefulness as heal/buff bots. Sure, they may faint and fall over if most enemies give them a too-stern glare -- but if you set them up right, they can keep your health topped up and provide you with some meaningful buffs so you can just focus on wailing on your victims enemies more. They won't carry you to victory, but they can empower you to get things done a bit easier than without any other help... as long as they're alive. I haven't had a whole lot of time for testing, but my hasty tests in setting them up for avoiding enemy aggro and just basically acting as a pocket healer seemed to go pretty well.

Pretty stupid that they are barely functional without copious support from a player (or another Companion, possibly?) in any other role though, given how they're marketed. A "tank" that can't stay alive for 6 seconds without a constant stream of heals from a player is a less than useless tank in most situations. Who wants to tote around a "companion" that is actually a burden and a detriment to getting things done in a fun or timely manner? Life's a little better if you are the tank/healer, and you're using them for damage -- but only a little. You have to spend considerable effort on keeping them alive (or from killing themselves due to stupidity!) only to watch them do mediocre damage to foes. I guess it beats slogging through quests/delves/whatever in a full-on tank or healer setup, but most tanks/healers know to have an alternate set of gear and skills for such occasions anyway. They're looking a lot like "barely worth the trouble" from a pure gameplay standpoint.

Guess they better be pretty good in the RP department to make up for it; but that only helps the folks who even want that in the first place. I seriously doubt I'll use them outside of as a pocket healer / buff provider role when duo'ing dungeons with a friend. I'm used to being the tank and main damage dealer already, and since they seem to suck in both of those roles it's just as well for me. Hopefully they'll improve over time.

You know originally per usual I always give the new content a go and see how it feels/is. As an end game player I think I'm not even going to entertain the new companions in their current state, at all...

I'm for sure going against what I said after the reveal but ZOS needs to show not just new or casual players why TF we should even attempt to quest and level (I've heard the leveling and gear so far is super trashy) these things. I normally don't jump to conclusions so quick but everything I've seen and read thus far makes them look useless to my playstyle.

With that being said...no disrespect to the players who are looking forward to them or plan on delving into their storyline. I'm a firm believer in to each their own and who TF cares about my opinion anyhow.

Unless I give them a bow and put range skills on them or stick them as a healer which may or may not even matter, they're useless. If they can't keep themselves alive on Normal, god forbid what will happen if I stick them in Vet. It's bad when you say you can bring them to X thing but they fail at doing the most basic thing like dying in nFG1 as a "tank".

So outside of lore and RP stuff, I honestly don't care about them too much and anything I was doing hasn't really improved upon their inclusion.

here is the thing though. i also have to manage my sorcs pets. but... i don't mind because my outcome is a net positive. i do better WITH pets than i do without. meanwhile with companions currently, I literally have easier time doing anything when they are dead vs alive. I spend so much time and effort trying to manage them, that everything takes longer and becomes harder, NOT easier.|

in SWTOR (which I'm bringing up specifically because you have companions here that you develop relationships with, gear and use as tools that you have to manage), not only do I have ACTUAL MANAGEMENT TOOLS for companions in combat - making their skills autofire or only fire when I manually select them, directing them to attack specific mobs and having them STAY on those mobs, even if i focus on other mobs, being able to tell them to go to a specific spot and then STAND there, them having outfit system that is completely independent from mine, but also being able to wear the same type of gear that i do etc, their loss of affection makes actual sense (when i make choices in quests that go against their personality which is also made pretty clear to me through numerous interactions with them, not just couple of quests that take forever to unlock and hating me for looting a BUG, or giving me extra hatred for opening a thieves trove in a wild and then opening a box that was inside that trove, cause nothing quite like double jeopardy, amirite?). if they still die, resurecting them is fairly fast, much like resummoning combat pets in ESO is fast, but companions take forever and use up freaking soul shards each and every time.

basically what i'm saying is that maybe if you are one of those people who wanted extra challenge with your gameplay - companions are for you, because micromanaging them is NOT helpful, unless you can already do whatever content it is that you are using them for - solo. when you say properly, you mean healing them to an extent where you dps drops significantly to under the numbers you would have normaly pulled solo? is that what you mean? cause that's the impression i'm getting from people "utilizing them properly" and never mind that to even get them anywhere near that point, you have to grind a LOT and be extremely lucky, as their gear drops are rare and you cannot control the weight of the drop, or its trait.

its easy to gear companions on pts, where you can get them leveled up in an instant via item from testing character they give you, that also comes with a box of every possible piece of companion gear in every possible trait, and in purple. have you tried leveling and gearing them from scratch? cause I have.

I will use them to some extent. I never expected companions to be a grade A addition from the get go but somethimg that could develop overtime into a nice feature. the way I see it is we have to continually sacrifice performance for content so might as well make as much of the content as we can or else what are we playing for?

Yes. I will use them regularly.
First things first: I don't give a damn about how much/little power they add to combat. *shrug*
Overland I can do just fine on my own. I've played through all the (non-vet) dungeons there are with my main (and I only have two characters at all), so I got the stories, so I have no specific reason to do the dungeons again. (Now, if you could re-play the story, that would be great, because some were rushed by the other three players back when I was more of a newbie...) Don't care about "beating" vet or trial stuff or whatnot.
And since my character is a tank(ish) fellow, Bastian might even get some hits in before bigger things (like chapter end bosses) die. :-D

The important thing: I get another story element in the game. Another quest to play through, so to speak.
And I get at least one NPC that will actually react to my character! Not like 99.9% of NPCs in this game that don't care if someone just murdered their neighbor, slaughtered their chickens, burned their house down, and sucked the blood/tore off the head of a random passerby - or if said someone is an orderly Imperial knight, a drunken Nord in a towel, or some skimpy dressed freakshow with glowing Daedric tattoos - they just say "Hello, adventuerer!" and deliver their quest in exactly the same tone.
I know not to expect a wonder of a tailor-made character story. But knowing there is at least some difference in the reaction of that NPC that rests on what my character is or does will add a lot of fun to my game. (And I have high hopes that they will further build on the rapport system for companion options in the future.)

Oh, and my dear character will finally have a friend who can stay with him to adventure through the world, and doesn't have to go because the story either killed him off or sent him away. [Why, exactly, do I care about some stupid Nords (and even more stupid Reachpeople) being harrowed by some stupid Vampires via some stupid storms??? I should be out there, looking to bring back Darien (or make Meridia pay), and finding out if Abnur Tharn was really killed, or just got stuck in some magical whatnot!! And some good friends I made in other quests could and would accompany me.]

It depends. I generally find useless npc followers annoying but if companions can do the job of clannifear, flappy or bear with very big butt for any class characters maybe they would have some value. But I feel no interest to coddle a companion for weeks to half a year for each char (if I understand right), even if they actually get AI to useful state.

Judging from past experiences, couple minor bugs solved. One glaringly obvious bug resolved.
Five new bugs show up in live server. 2-4 zombie bugs that were squished before come back. And there will be that one bug that cannot be squished at all, eventually turned into a feature or the whole thing reworked until the bug can no longer exist.

nope. it will make them attack a mob you are targeting, but the moment you heavy attack anything else? they switch to that. same goes for making them stop attacking with y+left click. heavy attack from you - cancels that out. they also share that control scheme with class pets so you cannot just tell companion to disengage while keeping pets on, etc. either they all engage or they all disengage.

I mean... its the same issue with class pets, but at least class pets do not die when you breathe on them wrong and while they have ONE ability i can control and in theory you can control companion ultimate, pet ability that I have control over, does NOT have a cooldown. companion ultimate.. well... its ultimate. everything they do has a cooldown, and Ulti, just like ours, has to be built up.

edited to add. you cannot make them go to a specific spot out of combat (in other words, you cannot make them stand on pressure plates).

    __________________________Backstories:_________________________

Ras Kalik the Vestige, a renown Redguard warrior; He has been blessed to save Tamriel from Molag Bal’s destructive Planemeld while reuniting the Five Companions. His further accomplishments after defeating Molag Bal, has been to stop the destruction of Morrowind, the Clockwork City, return order to the isle of Summerset and create a new king in Wrothgar and a queen in Elsywer. These events have made him a living legend and continue to lead him into new adventures throughout Tamriel, as well as into the hearts of many ladies including the Elf Queen, Aryenn. Over many years of adventurous travels, Ras Kalik had become a loner, until he re-visited his homeland of Alik'r.

Alik'r and it's cities were overrun by the undead Ra-Netu and therefore he made an allegiance with Alik'r's own Ash'abah tribe. These Ash'abah with his help, cleansed the city of Sentinel in Alik'r desert and it's surrounding areas of the undead brought to life by the Withered Hand. After rescuing Sentinel from the undead zombies, King Fahara’jad’s personal bodyguard the Goliath of Hammerfell, who was given this name by Imperials in the region; was asked to assist the tribe after learning of the defeat of the Withered Hand to the Ash'abah. Kalik promised Goliath he would task him with fighting living enemies on the battlefield if he so desired. Goliath being a Yokudan warrior wields a massive sword in respect to the Ansei, a gift given by the Imperial, Cinan Tharn. Not many soldiers are able to wield double two handed weapons, but Goliath loves to get up and personal in a fight, so he also carries a giant maul, both weapons laced with magical flames.

Jux Blackheart is a master thief that masquerades as a Bard at the Sisters of the Sands inn, with his younger sidekick Lucky Hunch for pilfering and gambling during this time. Jux was known to infiltrate any towns bank vault he came across and even delved into Ayelid ruins without detection. Kalik can vividly recall the night he met the famed thief. Jux found himself rummaging thru a slightly inebriated Kalik’s pocket for too long, on a full-mooned night and because of his greed and the glimmer of his golden armor in the moonlight. He lost his left pinky fingertip as a lesson! But in return, he gained a new friend, as it was his first time since a child being caught red-handed...

Upon arrival back in the Alik'r after many moons of adventuring, Ras Kalik ventures to Bergama. Visiting The Winking Jackal, he runs into Jux Blackheart, who introduces him to the coin game Crowns vs Forebearers (Heads vs Tails) and Golden Dwemer (RBG).... Jux constantly takes gold from the unfortunate thru theft or gambling, his biggest gambling victim is actually his partner in crime known as Lucky Hunch the Gambler. Lucky doesn't mind losing any gold coins to Jux... as Jux saved him from Altmer slavers in Summerset, by stealing a key and sending him on a boat to the mainland years prior. Lucky spent years in slavery with Khajiits in Summerset and picked up the art of subterfuge, using illusion magic disguises and stealing there.

Kaotik Von’Daemon an outcast, and a half-caste between a Breton mother and a Redguard father. Kaotik become a pariah due to his conjuration of Daedra pets. He was taught healing magic during his childhood years by his Breton mother. His father due to Redguard customs exiled him from the desert, sending him by wagon caravan to be a soldier in the war in Cyrodiil. He happened to meet Kalik while traveling from Alik'r, during this long caravan ride the caravan he was in was ambushed in Bangkorai by a group of bandits. Kalik by chance was also traveling thru this area on his Auridon Warhorse (which was bestowed to him by his friend, Darien Gautier). During this ambush, Kalik was able to rescue five hostages from the bandits. Kaotik was the first rescued, and Ras Kalik also recruited him to be in the Ash'abah tribe. These core Ash'abah tribesmen may never be seen together in travel as they partake in their own adventures but they always know what each other is doing; as they frequent a hideout in northern Bankorai. Their hideout an old Orc castle ruin, is kept watch by Nuzhimeh and she passes messages written between them, and frequently they also enjoy her company and her bed.

The other men rescued were a Dunmer banker, an Imperial mercenary and two other soldiers, an Imperial and a Breton Knight, stating proudly he was an Akavir descendent. One of the Imperials, Cinan, claimed to be related to Abnur Tharn the Battlemage of the Imperial Elder Council (One of Ras Kalik's mentors in the Five Companions). Cinan Tharn was really Abnur's drunkard treasure hunting illegitimate son. He was caught smuggling artifacts out of the Ayleid ruins in Cyrodiil and the elder of the two Imperials was Tyrus Septim a retired Imperial navy battle-mage (now a Lycan mercenary living in the city of Rimmen) and guard to the Tharn family. As much as Abnur Tharn hated his half-sister Euraxia, he dislikes his bas†ard son Cinan more. Tyrus now a ruffian and privateer had been paid by Abnur Tharn to watch over Cinan as much as possible. Cinan Tharn a drunkard, loves to drink at least a quarter barrel of Nord mead before he raids various delves and dungeons for relics to sell on the black market. Cinan also plans to one day, run an illegal gambling ring... which he thinks will net him more gold for his wares.

The Dunmer captive shackled to the Imperials looked familiar to Kalik from his time in Morrowind.... and he recognized him as Tythis Andromo a House Telvanni slave-owner and banker from Vvardenfell. During a rough interrogation to Tythis, Ras Kalik learnt why the bandits accosted him. The racist Dunmer was providing slaves as soldiers for the Three Banner War. The bandits were trying to negotiate a lucrative ransom for Andromo and the Imperials.... Kalik did not need any of this gold and he could never set Tythis free as he did with the two Imperial soldiers. His past involvement with slavery and war crimes, made Kalik's blood boil. He chose not to execute Tythis, as he figured the worse punishment for this former rich and opulent slave owner, is to now be an imprisoned servant for Ras Kalik and the tribe.

Herzog Zwei the Genesis a reknown Imperial/Akavirri battle-mage. His roots going back to Akavir through his mother’s bloodline. (His mother is descended from the Akaviri, through Versidue-Shae, and his Imperial father met her in Hakoshae, while traveling) Herzog earned the nickname "the Genesis" from his father as a child, as he was his mother's first born child, and last, as she tragically died in child-birth.

Herzog was seeking to purchase an artifact from Cinan Tharn, before their capture and was meeting Tyrus while in Rimmen, who introduced him to Cinan. This artifact being the Ayelid artifact; the sword Sinweaver. After their rescue and the exchange of gold to Cinan for the sword he decided to slip away before Ras Kalik could question who he was, and why the Akavir descendant really wanted that sword. Herzog was headed to Nagastani — An Ayleid ruin in eastern Cyrodiil. He had read in scrolls that the Sword would give him magical powers to meet his mothers spirit, if he performed an Ayleid ritual at an old shrine hidden there. Equipped with the artifact sword, he was off to start his own adventure but Ras Kalik, did indeed notice the sword however and instead sent a letter to Jux Blackheart (whom also was interested in Ayleid treasures), to attempt to find Herzog and acquire the sword. (*Azani Blackheart in Elder Scroll's Oblivion is Jux's descendant some 747 years later)

And so the Redguard, Imperial and Akaviri men parted ways ... While Ras Kalik went off to Elsweyr to encounter the latest threat to Tamriel, with Abnur Tharn and Sai Sahan - - DRAGONS!! Little did Ras Kalik know a few people were awaiting him in Senchal besides Sai. A necromancer survived his attack on the Withered Hand, while in Alik'r. The necromancer known as Auriek Siet'ka is also following him to the land of the Khajiits and Cacique the Sage of Ius a Shaman mystic who has become attuned spiritually with Tu'whacca (a Redguard God) and Ius (the Animal God), after being burned severely by the escaped dragons in Elsywer, is awaiting his arrival also. Aurik is a soldier of the Daggerfall Covenant that was introduced to necromancy while in the military, even though this magicka art is not spoken of openly by most of the Military leaders. He came to Alik'r and worked with the Withered Hand before Ras Kalik intervened on their plans. After the defeat of the Withered Hand, he aligned with the Worm Cult, and is constantly adapting and perfecting his necromantic arts.

After his journey to Rimmen, Kalik heads south to Senchal, in the southern regions of Elyswer. This new adventure will also put him on a path to meet a strange Redguard man. The stranger which was infected with an untreated Peyrite disease and also was the exiled from the Order of the New Moon cult, due to his sickness. He originally joined the cult to worship Laatvulon, the green dragon, mistakenly thinking it was the Daedric prince Peyrite. This confused and suffering cultist is known as Tsar al-Bomba and he is on a path to spread the disease. He was originally infected in Orccrest while recruiting members there. Can Ras Kalik and the shaman Cacique cure this poor soul, only time will tell. Little does Tsar al-Bomba know, that his infection is tied to Vampirism, and eventually the desire for blood will take over his mind. Senchal also offers Kalik his latest love interest... Aeliah. Whom he fondly led thru battles with the Dragonguard.

After the trek thru the heat, tropical and desert climate of Northern and Southern Elyswer, Ras Kalik heads north to the cold mountain range of Skyrim. His companion friend Lyris beckons for him with a letter sent by crow...

Movárth Piquine - a former vampire hunter (now infected), within the Fighter's Guild (and a secretive necromancer) was in Skyrim working with the Morthaal Guard. On a patrol mission he was caught in Frewien's ice curse outside of Morthaal with the frozen undead. Movárth's vampiric infection kept him from becoming an undead minion to the curse. He was able to use necromantic ice-magic to encase himself safely until he was freed with Freiwen, when the Vestige Ras Kalik broke the curse.

Uri Ice-Heart - brother of Urfon Ice-Heart. The twin sons of Atli and Oljourn Ice-Heart. The Ice-Heart family are originally from Markarth but now reside on the Jerall Mountain range near Cyrodiil, with their younger sister Araki. The twins had joined the Winterborn Reachmen while living in Markarth. Urfon pushed west to Orsinium with the Winterborn Clan, leaving his family behind. Uri stayed behind with his parents and sister to live in the family cabin for safety, avoiding the Vampire plague infiltrating the Reach. After news reaches him and he hears of Urfon's death... Uri leaves and heads home and is seeking vengeance. Meanwhile, his sister has also moved on to Windhelm to join the Fighter's guild. He will visit his sister, once before going to seek vengeance and she will craft him armor mixed with ice, called Stalhrim armor. Uri fearing death, after his brother's passing, falls victim to the convincing talk of Movárth at a Nordic tavern, and will also becomes a vampire.
