Companions

Newly returned to the game and preordered the new Dlc. Just a question about companions, and I couldn’t find an answer anywhere that was 100% yes or no. Does anyone know for sure if companions take the place of a ‘real player’ when queuing for a dungeon? Or will there be 4 players/4 bots in everything? As if the lag wasn’t bad enough...

Unclear. Most assume that companions will be able to replace players, not be in addition to. But nothing stated officially yet as far as I know.

i sure hope that is the case.
just like i did in dungeons and dragons online i took 6 companions with me into dungeons and i loved it and they helped me finish the boss.
i hope eso companions will be exactly the same.
"not looking for just a follower"
i want to be able to take 6 of them with me into dungeons and i want them to be as powerfull and damage dealing and healing and tanking just as good if not better then real players.

I assumed from the information given that they'd be like Skyrim's followers. In which case, they probably wouldn't take up a slot in a party. But there will probably be a limit of 1 follower per person. Which means that it would put 8 total in dungeons, 4 players and 4 followers. Shouldn't be a game breaker but I do expect some bugs with it. They may even limit that but we'll just have to see lol

I personally have long awaited a companion system. Could care less if they're limited to level 50 or have limited abilities. I just want a battle buddy in my explorations. One extra pair of hands, even if they repeatedly die, makes so much difference.

From the interview with ESO's creative director Rich Lambert:
"Companions were really envisioned to give solo players the ability to run content with a companion, or two friends and their companions."
So the limit of the participants is still four, but you have an option to replace real players with companions.

I'm hoping they change that to allow up to 4 active companions in a dungeon with a full party, so no favoritism for an NPC over an actual person. Just have the party leader use a setting that either allows or disables Companions before the first boss is killed. Otherwise I can see a lot of abuse with the system in the long run of removing players.

Nobody will kick out players for the sake of a bot, at least at high difficulties. It is not profitable.
Let's be extremely precise in our use of terms.

    Then it's useless.

Why? You can take three instead of one and adjust their roles (tank, healer, dd) and play like in full party. Search forum for details, it's a complete replacement of real players. One thing people still discuss is will player able to take 12 companions in the trial or not.

Are you going to have to unlock them for each character you have? or are they Account wide?

    1. It benefits ZOS to be character bound by making it that you have to play the chapter for each character.

    2. Benefits the player community to be Account wide.

    Which way will it be?

I do believe they will be good for getting rid of fake roles., So people can ease up, have fun, getting things done, not leaving because of seeing thier quest going down the drain because of fakss and speedsters.

A MMO where players are replaced by bots... This is a bit ridiculous.

Not the first to do it
Ff14 gave us the trust system to do dungeon alone with the main npc
And from what i heard from some pc player that a few other mmo such as swtor do it as well

I was under the impression that each character can only have one companion active. So I don't see how one character can have three companions to fill a 4 character instance.

Especially since to begin with there are only two companions....

I was thinking that this could be a big time-saver too because if you have one other person to play with and both your companions (or whatever combo) then you don't need to queue and go straight to the dungeon.

ZOS provides additional option for players tho .

I cannot wait to read “OMG, I just got kicked from a group that that has a healer/tank/dos companion” ha ha

As someone who has played a few games with this companion type system, I can tell the game was enhanced greatly because of the system

It does seem that they will take up a slot but depending on how much you can customize them, they might be better than 80% of the people you get in the que.

If you can set their gear and then set their skill rotation down. Then it comes down to the base stats and how far you can level them. And if they are decent then a bot built by you is better than a pug 80% of the time, which is kinda sad.

If the Companion DD is 10-15k DPS single target they'll be on par with your random PUG
If the Companion Healer can throw Radiating regeneration and Heavy attack they'll be on par with your random PUG healer
If tthe Companion Tank can taunt and hold a boss it'll be on par with your random pug tank

Should be interesting, the community hasn't placed the bar very high for being replaced in a PUG.

We'll have to see the actual capability of the system before we can render judgements. Bots can't think on the fly so I don't see them being useful beyond say normal difficulty dungeons. I imagine they'll be crawling on the ground asking for pick up most of the time, just like every other game AI that isn't smart enough to step out of the red circle. Of course, I've also seen folks that were also that bad so... If I can put group buff sets on them I'll be happy.

What do you think how intelligent NPC companions in this game will be? A game that has a pretty much defunct pet AI and no control over them. Companions will either be completely useless or they’ll be overpowered, because a pet that’s not overpowered in ESO is useless due to the AI.

You people know that you will only be able to have 1 of them follow you at any give time.... so you cannot take 3 of them with you into a dungeon or 11 into a trial.... even if you have more than one you will only able to use one at any given time

I think it is going to be more Akin to the Dragon Age Companion system. Except instead of 3 at a time, you just get one. And for group dungeons, you will have to choose companion or player for the slots avail, and this could include trials as well.

This companion system will shake up the status quo on dungeons.

You can use 1 companion at a time. Companions don't replace players, you can't que with them, they won't work in pve or single player arenas. I am pretty sure they do work in Dragon Star Arena and Black Rose Prison. Normal Non-DLC Dungeons, nDSA nBRP, and public dungeons is probably going to to be max of their usefulness because anything more any they will constantly be dying.
