Isn't this exactly what companions are for? At least I was planning to use them pretty much only on my tanks.

The problem with companions is that they apparently cross over your entire account. If you make one of the two a tank for example, then it appears that companion will be a tank for all of your alts.Personally, I was hoping I could tailor each companion to work with each of my characters, but that appears to not be the case.

Interesting, I will have another look at the companions dev discussion. I was under the impression that because companions were in the collections menu they were available across the account BUT (like horses) the stats etc were per character. Indeed each character still has to 'unlock' the companion by doing their quest.
I think that you can tailor companions to each character - their empathy bar (forget correct term) is certainly per character otherwise the stealing by one character that will upset the Imperial Companion would carry over to a character who never steals and so on.
Just carry other gear.
Any basic dps gear will do for overland dailies etc.

Why make life more difficult for support roles? Just give them an option to do more damage to pve targets in the cp system.
They already have pve and pvp focused cp passives in the tree system, is one additional one so much to ask?

You're the one making life difficult for yourself.
Even if it increase damage by 10%, still would mean you hit like crap in yolakhrin and ebon or whatever. 10% of wet it still wet.
Just keep some other gear on you. That's what most people do.
