We need a solo version of Dungeons and trials

I really wish they had enough resources to give both a vet/trial level overland and base dungeon as well as a Story-Mode of the raids and dungeons! While ESO is an MMO, it's also an Elder Scrolls game so I feel for both sides 😿

I just dont understand the rationale behind making the decision to specifically play a multi-faceted game then demanding it be smashed into one facet. It seems pretty selfish tbh when people demand entire core fundamentals of a game be warped to their specific preferences which is super common among pretty much everything in the game. Especially when people suggest 'make it easier so I don't have to put any effort in'.

Like trials are specifically designed to THE group PvE content yet people still demand it be catered to single player. It makes legitimately no sense really. If group PvE isnt your thing and you have absolutely zero desire to step out of your comfort zone, then it's just not something you're going to experience. And thats not supposed to be a burn either. Different people have different preferences. But understand that not everything needs to bend to your preferences lol

There is a line a game needs to walk between making too much absolutely unreachable and handing everything out for free. Making too much unobtainable to everyone but the most elite gatekeeps new players away and crushes casual players. Make everything too easy and all sense of gratification for overcoming obstacles and desire to improve is gone. Humans by and large derive far more satisfaction and sense of accomplishment after reaching a goal when there are obstacles and hurdles to overcome along the way.

Dumbing everything down ends up killing games. The bar for normal trials and dungeons is already incredibly low. Achievable with purple crafted gear and maybe an hour or two of practice. I'm not a fan of setting it even lower than that.

I know a lot of people in my guild never knew there were books to read in Cloudrest because it was always sprint kill sprint kill sprint kill with maybe a bit of dying mixed in with all the killing. Even without books there are things to see and screenshots to be had. Cloudrest is a small (in area) trial and players still do not see all there is to see. It isn't just about stories.
I don't think we will get a solo story mode version of dungeons or trials because it would require to many separate instances. If it were possible it would be nice for players that just want to run around and look at things.

Good thing you can go into Cloudrest and literally look at everything that can be looked at short of the small arenas all the bosses are in then, and read all the books and even engage with the NPCs, then. :)

SWTOR has solo versions for all but a few dungeons. and those few dungeons are low on story/standalone/old. people are not asking to be able to solo veteran trials. they are asking for solo mode to see the story.

Trials are also low on story/standalone/old. They're not even remotely required to understand what is going on in a region. In your WORD DOT WORD DOT WORD DOT WORD DOT comment you're acting like trials are pivotal parts of the story but they're literally not (altho you then go on an act like I was talking about the yearly dungeons which I clearly wasn't so... who even knows).

I'm acting like DUNGEONS are a pivotal part of the story. trials do tie into it though (Craglorn trials do, others to some degree, not as much as dungeons though). the only trial in SWTOR that ties into the story to that degree, btw is the one in Shadow of Revan expansions, and there - you have a solo version of encounter. its not the same as the trial, but in terms of story - it serves the same role. there IS another trial that is part of the storyline but the response was so severe, that they never did that again.

this post is about BOTH trials AND dungeons. and heck, part of the post you quoted of mine SPECIFICALY REFERS TO DUNGEONS. if you are going to argue with me, at least argue what I actualy SAID.

Uhhhh I was? In the part of your post I quoted, you literally said: "people are not asking to be able to solo veteran trials. they are asking for solo mode to see the story." You were talking about dungeons in SWTOR and then only mentioned trials in ESO.

    But go off. :)

you are the one who keeps trying to make it sound as if we are focusing on trials.

I'm the one saying that there is story in both and especially focusing on dungeon stories. but do go off.

Because I was talking about trials. And you were ALSO talking about trials (see: quoted). :kissing_heart:

I totally agree with a soloable story mode for dungeons. Though I was away for several years, I'm an old player and, for example, I never realized Dagon himself speaks to Gilrain at the end of its quest — and with a Bosmeri accent, mind you.

But I disagree mobs/bosses shouldn't attack players, they just need to be considerably scaled-down so every player, of every class and I'd dare say every role can beat them.

Regarding loot, it shouldn't be changed, after all, many of us are already soloing normal versions to farm gear, aren't we?

Honest Question: Why have normal mode when story mode gives the same rewards but will be much much easier? Everyone will use story mode to farm gear instead of normal.

Literally this. Why would anyone bother trying to find eleven other people in specific roles if they could just story mode farm trials solo? Why even have any group content in an MMO if you could just do the same content on super easy story mode and get exactly the same gear?

Honestly, it's not just a terrible idea, it's a silly one too.

Actually with the difficulty of obtaining items for the collections tab, this may not be as a goofy idea as it first seems. For one thing, the nice thing about running a dungeon is being able to trade loot to get gear faster which could not be done in solo, but in a solo dungeon people could run them at their whim without waiting an hour for a queue to pop, especially for the folks that play late at night.

They both have their pros and cons, but with weapons being hard to obtain for collections (because they only drop off the boss, or random out of a chest), getting gear out of a "solo" run dungeon might have some legitimacy. I mean, its no different than an arena.

    sigh,

why are people talking as if solo version would remove group versions in any way? people who would utilize solo versions for the story are either not running the dungeons at all, or are those annoying slower people you all hate anyways.

it doesn't have to be farmable. it doesn't have to drop any loot at all, or maybe nominal loot like non set item or two.

its like you all cannot see beyond farming.

the irony here is that most people here farming dungeons do not care for the multiplayer aspect whatsofreakingever. you treat other people in a group as if they are npc's - not other people.

edited to add. has it EVER occurred to you that this could be a gateway to 1. justifying making for trials and dungeons as more people in general utilize that content? 2. a gateway to creating harder overland stuff, potentially starting with harder versions of instance content like delves, public dungeons and instanced story bits?

[snpi] Why should someone doing something in ez pz story mode light attacking their way solo through 12 person content get the same gear as someone who does the content as intended? Do they also deserve to get the same achievements and rewards?

And it IS different to an arena, because it is content explicitly designed for multiple people to do. [snip]

Also what is "late at night"? Late at night for you? Late at night for me? Late at night for someone halfway between our timezones? There's an entire game world that continues on while you're asleep. The game doesn't become a barren wasteland at whatever time "late at night" is meant to be.

Objectively wrong with what I'm talking about. I'm talking about difficulty progression and how difficulty is scaled up for players. I've met many, many players that don't dare to take a step into harder content because the bridge between normal and veteran is huge. It's already huge as it is, this would just make it bigger by cutting off all possibility of interest gauging from players that have to take that step into atleast trying out the easy versions of group content.

If they add this system then they should make normal content much harder than it is and that would make plenty of people angry.

    2. the bridge between normal and vet is STILL huge. whether there is or isn't a solo mode, people are STILL avoiding vet. you cannot force them to go into vet, by hiding a story from them behind group content. especially since seeing story in normal is bad enough, seeing it vet is IMPOSSIBLE. people get mad at you for even mentioning being on the quest, best case scenario, you get to finish the dungeon but not the quest, or they will just tell you to go to normal and kick you. what solo COULD do is allow people to see what the dungeon is like in a stress free enviroment. familiarize themselves with a layout and where the bosses are and aproximate mechanics, so that they do not get hopelessly loss thanks to people rushing through normals for their 10 daily crystals and not caring that someone might be new and/or trying to do the quest.

    1. What you can do is provide avenues for interest in that content. People don't know what they enjoy until they actually try it or there's an obvious pathway to doing it. The jump from normal to vet content is very daunting for most players that a lot of them don't bother. If you provide them a way to transition into it by ramping up difficulty slowly then improving comes over time naturally. As it is now, you have to go out of your way to git gud, which yeah, you can't force anyone to do. But giving people the natural tools to progress from just regular gameplay allows both communities to flourish. That is such a fundamental concept to literally every aspect of life from studies to sports to arts. [snip]

I'm not saying we should remove normal, [snip] because he can already do it in normal. These dungeons are *** easy on normal with the smallest amount of effort. If you can't do them, then watch a YT video. Why is it fair for the devs to work on watering down content even further than it already has been for a community that already gets 95% of new content goodies while endgame communities sit around with *** achievable rewards? Godslayer was a good incentive with the mount but now vKA Dawnbringer only gives you a dumb memento.

    2. People are avoiding vet now because normal content is so watered down that there is no comparison. If anything, we should be getting an inbetween "medium" mode to help better bridge the gap between the two. We shouldn't be asking for content that's EVEN easier than it is now on normal. Hell, they even watered down the non-HM vet versions of dungeons and trials so people have an easy time farming monster helms and perfected gear if they don't want to do the challenge runs, which IMO is fine (Even if I think they should give a lot more achievable incentives for players that actually do the harder content beyond just a neat title. Even the skins are achievable from just doing regular veteran which I don't think should be the case).

If you want to roleplay through a dungeon, get a group of people to do it with you. Group content is group content for a reason, find a group. Do it as intended. There is no need for an easy solo mode, [snip]

Can't speak for the trials but for dungeons, just solo them on normal. Pretty easy with the right build. (example: tanky lightning heavy attack DK with pale order ring). Just check out PaddyVu in youtube if you want to see specific techniques for soloing hard dungeons, that mad lad soloes them on veteran.

Most pin mechanics can be easily dealt with using psijic ultimate, some of them can be outright face-tanked using vampirism and other dmg mitigation methods (especially on normal difficulty).

Out of the 40 something dungeons in the game, I can only think of Direfrost Keep and Imperial City Prison for dungeons that can't be soloed (because of pressure plates/ levers etc). Just need 1 more person for those.

You are right that only some people can solo most dungeons, people who don't put a wee bit of effort and don't wanna go out of their comfort zone can't do it.

This is an MMO, there has never been and probably never will be an MMO that lets you experience the whole game solo. As a matter of fact, unless you are L33T, you probably won't experience a bunch of it. I have played many MMO's for years(10+ in EQ) and still never "saw" the end game content, it was reserved for those willing to put in the time, effort and coordination to do so.. which I wasn't.

ESO is entirely different in that aspect, you just need 11 rando's and you can experience the entire game. If you want to poke around and do it slowly, check every corner, then get 11 like minded friends to do it with. Although, the trials in most cases do not allow you to poke around in many cases. You will however need some minimal skills to not get wiped.

SWTOR has solo versions for all but a few dungeons. and those few dungeons are low on story/standalone/old. people are not asking to be able to solo veteran trials. they are asking for solo mode to see the story.

ESO is exactly the same way, out of the vast amounts of content in this game, there are 9 trials you need other people to completely "see". Sounds exactly like SWOTR to me.

    no, its not.

none of the dungeons have story modes.

and before you go into the whole "but you can still solo them" they are NOT designed to be soloed, and a lot of causal players can NOT solo them. SWTOR dungeons have specific modes that are designed for a solo player to enjoy the story. yes, the loot is different.

If they can do it I see no reason why ESO cannot

They should also make group / hard mode for the main story boss if they go this route because that would make for a more consistent gameplay experience across the year long story

My problem with this whole solo-story Mode is, that the “difficulty” is actually a part of the story.

Implementing the SWTOR solution with a companion system which you could level and escort you into the Dungeons would be a huge effort for ZOS, and frankly, they have other problems to fix at the moment.

In CoA 1 there is that unique moment, where you could choose an ally for the rest of the quest, either healer or archer. Neither of them did their part pretty good, let alone good enough to be considered allies for a solo-story Mode.

That brings us to the problem: the only way to cater the needs of OP is to scale down the health of the mobs to a point where it would be considered “Solo-Mode”. Now we all here know the immense gap between bottom and top, so you can imagine how these Story-Mode Healthbars would look like. (some one typed in some examples)
    lets have story mode
    ADDS= 500 HEALTH
    MINNIE BOSS = 1000 HEALTH
    MAIN BOSS = 1500 HEALTH
    QUEST & SKILL POINT
    ALL STORY , NO AWARDS

done like this tanks and healers can do story mode too

Now to conclude: would that be a satisfying Story Mode, where you go in to experience the Story and then oneshot every boss in it?

“there are no spoils here but DEATH” boom oneshot lord warden

“the scroll is mine, kill them ALL”
waduush all 3 bosses on the floor, in the blink of an eye

“I will remind you: Dragons are gods in the flesh” bazoiiiink navihntaas is dead in front of your feet

You get my point: your character is part of the Story in the dungeons and trials, it would weaken the story by a hefty amount if you would act as god among mortals. So please, don’t you think a story mode with scaled health to oneshot everything would bring you joy. I don’t think it will.

If that's what people want from this possible mode I surely can't sign under it. Veteshran arena is a new good example of difficulty that is okay for an experienced player but still way more accessible then previous arenas for the first time as an inexperienced first timer. Idk about normal mode, but I'm pretty sure it's faceroll and probably a way to go for the ones who can't be bothered, rewards are virtually the same anyway. So it probably would be in their solo arena standards health/damage vise if happens one day.

I am not about to hijack this thread in detailed response as to why we do not need harder overland content. There are enough threads on this forum telling you that already. If you want to discuss that I suggest you comment on one of them or start your own thread.

This thread is a debate about whether or not we need solo modes for dungeons and trials.

I'm not arguing against a story mode, nor seeking to derail the thread either; I am just saying that unfortunately, ZOS caters to one group of players far more than any other, so we see a continuous stream of new (and anti-climactic) overland content, while challenging content is diluted, and the pvp options are routinely ignored. making dungeons accessible to people who don't want to group, or would otherwise (for whatever reason) not experience that content, is fine with me, honestly, but I can't help but feel the remainder of some overland content (chapter bosses, story progression bosses, delves, and public dungeons for example) should also have instanced veteran modes for those who prefer that type of content. It's (as others have said) 2 sides of the same coin--and while were at it, why not make the sieged and contested overland areas optional PVP areas for alliance skirmishes? There are so many ways to make the existing content multidimensional, the only thing lacking is the time (and potentially cost of free base game updates) to do it. So why only focus on one group of the player base?
