Sorry but I dislike the music

The music feels very generic and the combat music more so. The sheer repetitiveness wore me down. Yes I know there are only so many tracks you can include a a 70GB download ;)

No shade on the musicians but the games usage of music is, boring, did I say repetitive?

As my grandfather said to me "Don't curse the darkness, light a light"

So I max the ambient etc, mute the music and play good stuff in the background.

I really like the ambient sounds but the bards can sometimes be defiling [snip] sometimes.

Curtaros is my most disliked voice in the whole game as I can only do Alinor writs by starting outside the area or I have to hear his dreadful voice, woe is me.

Nevermind

Sorry you don't care for the music so much but glad that turning it off and running your own tracks helps. I think a fair number of players do that. I quite like the background sound tracks for the game and appreciate that differing zones use differing tracks.

One thing I like is fighting world bosses. If I'm having a tough time of it, I never notice the background music, but often everything is going smoothly and that is when I notice the fight background music - that is when I really know I'm doing well and the boss is gonna lose. :)
PC NA(no Steam), PvE, mostly solo

I would argue that Skyrim actually has a very strong atmosphere with identity. Same goes for ES III & IV. Each one is iconic. That's why ESO Morrowind looked at ES III for music inspiration.

OMG I didn't realize that the background music reacts to your progress, I will try that now.

BTW and a huge disclaimer but I make music for films and a game and I do find the music in this game rather less than awe-inspiring.

I agree. There is some music in the game that I enjoy, but some of it actually irritates me and annoys me. Mostly the combat music. I wish it were like TES3 where I could add in my own personal music files to play during the game.

I think it is overused music by that one guy that does rpg music.
I can't remember his name, but seems every second game I play is music done by him.

The soundtrack isn't too different to that of Skyrim's and other heavy fantasy games.

Jeremy Soule who made the music for Skyrim, Morrowind, and Oblivion did NOT make the music for ESO. He made ESO's original theme song which I honestly feel like is miles above the repetitive songs Brad Derrick has been releasing for ESO over these years. The only music I like from Brad is the score he made for Summerset as it truly is beautiful but the rest of it, especially the combat music, is repetitive and boring.

There is another artist who made some of the base game songs by the name of Rik Schaffer and he made the songs Tides of the Abeccean Sea and Northpoint Nocturne which are some of the most beautiful songs in ESO and play in the base game Skyrim zones as well as Western Skyrim.

    Here's Northpoint Nocturne for instance.

Brad Derrick music in ESO is just too vague and lacks identity in many instances, especially in these comparisons.

Theme Music should be identifiable - like if I listen to it I can immediately place it.

Each to their own, but I find the music in ESO to be consistently good, and better than good at times. The music of Murkmire, for instance, was particularly refreshing.

I never thought about that. How does the music know better when you are in combat or not than the game mechanics? xD

    Hopefully we get more variety.

You know what has amazing music. Destiny 2!
When I am in Dreaming City and this song plays around the 0:40 mark, that is where I stop everything and close my eyes. It is so wonderful.

I don’t think I’ve noticed in PVE, but I’ve noticed in Cyro during particularly long fights the music is different from regular battle music. It’s simpler and more, hmm aggressive? I really like it and I think it adds to the fight itself.

Music that plays in the large PVP battles is what the devs called "Boss music". You only hear those tracks going up against boss monsters and the like. In small PVP skirmishes the small encounter music plays, and in decently sized fights the standard combat music plays.

I don't get people's dislike over ESO's music. I like it that it's "lowkey". The bards are nice too.

It gets boring and annoying fast when games have very dramatic music. Like in Witcher 3 I start yell at the combat music to shut it it was just some drowners.

I agree ESO does need to work on their soundtrack, WoW does a really good job on their musical score. Each track fits really well in the zone you're in and sometimes a good soundtrack can reflect it's lore and even tell a story. A good example would be the Blood Elf zone Eversong Woods.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FU_yNE2MMOU
When you listen to it you hear some elves singing, they sound distant and sad. Their song sounds like it is echoing, almost as if it came from a time long before the Scourge invasion destroyed their homeland and when the forest was in its most beautiful form and untainted by the undead.
Especially previous TES games like Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim have many such tracks that invoke this kind of feeling, Secunda is my favourite.

I'm not asking for ESO to copy the dramatic tracks of games like WoW or Destiny - my point is that those tracks had strong identity, the soundtrack of ES III-V had strong identity and atmosphere and alot of the vague track in eso (imo) lacks the atmosphere of the single player games

I like a number of tracks from ESO soundtrack, mostly zone tracks. Combat tracks are OK, but not the ones I would listen not in game. To tell the truth, though, I am not a fan of most Skyrim combat tracks too (with the exception of Watch the Skies, it is very good).

The best Elder Scrolls music for me is the Forgotten Vale theme from Dawnguard.
The Three Storm Sharks, episode 8 released on january the 8th.

I usually run without music at all because I love ambient sounds in this game, but I liked Murkmire and the Reach zone music very much, I like those zones where they kinda reused music from other TES games. And I absolutely love music from the Maw of Lorkhaj. And I had Coldharbour theme stuck in my head more than once.
I'd give music in this game solid 5/7.

I generally find it very pleasing to hear, both in and out of game, but I do also agree that there could be more battle music variance.
