Unless zos rewrites the engine, I doubt we will ever see buttery smooth performance. The engine is unable to, or can't use more than one cpu core efficiently.

On my machine it pretty much maxes four cores so it's doing something with them 8)

This game will die, but not as soon as people think.
For the moment their is no direct concurrent that are worth anything.
That why FF - WoW - GW2 and ESO keep their community, they're 4 unique game style.

But as soon as good mmorpg will come, they'll die because how old they are.
And they know it, why do you thing all these mmorpg sell so many different thing in CS ?
Why do you thing they try to improve the game so badly even if keep failing because the core is to old ?

So, yeah, it only depend on which type of mmorpg are gonna be released on the market and how good they are.
Sadly most announced mmo are just going to fail.
New world in the 1st place.

To me, for my own taste, only Pantheon have a chance if they succeed but it's not at all for soon.

My guess is that the game was planned to run for a decade - actively supported during this time and afterwards it might still be online for as long as it is financially viable - 10 years is a reasonable time (with TES6 eventually coming out 2024?) and Tamriel will be pretty much completed by then as well.

    Greetings all,

After removing a handful of posts for being off-topic, but mostly for Hate Speech, we must remind everyone that all posts are to be kept civil, constructive, and within the guidelines of the rules. Hate Speech is a violation of the Community Guidelines and is stated as follows:
    • Hate Speech:
We take the use of hate speech very seriously in the official ESO community, and have a zero tolerance policy.
Our definition of hate speech is prejudice or hateful comments, slurs, or statements that promote violence or intolerance toward others because of the following:
    • Race
    • Creed
    • Color
    • National Origin
    • Gender
    • Age
    • Disability
    • Sexual Orientation

If there may be any questions in regards to the rules, please take a few moments to review them here.

    Thank you for your understanding,

This is great. While I was fortunate to not see the comments I thank you and Zos for being active against hate speech. Harassment, especially at this level, is something that no one should have to encounter.

I think Teso will die closer to 2022.

No offense but people have been claiming ESO was dying for almost seven years yet the population keeps growing.

The number of players grows only on the day the new update is released, and that's it. You can even look online in steam for all the years in the incentive, and you will see that the peak in November 2016 was 29k players, and in the last 30 days (2020) - 33k players. Simply put, nothing has changed at all. But the optimization has changed in the 4 years since I started playing. She became terrible. And in general, this online now consists of new players, and not static ones who play the game every day

Business analysts and investors do not put much weight into comparing one month to the previous month as it does not take into account seasonal influences which is something that heavily influences the gaming industry. They look at comparing the month to the same month the year before as that is what shows true growth.

So, looking at the Steam Charts the way an analyst or investor would then we see a continuous steady growth over the years. The only exception is three months last year ESO had a significant dip when WoW released their expansion. That is even more telling because they seemed to have quickly come back to ESO.

In other words, via the only measurement, we have ESO has shown a great growth trend that any analyst or investor would suggest shows ESO is a great success.

EDIT: and again, people have been saying ESO was dying since the game released and we have yet to see their prophecy come true. Someday it will but not anytime soon.

I just recently started a new character and all I can say from going again through newbie regions is, they are quite packed with players (not necessarily new ones though) - as well the chapter regions like Morrowind and Elsweyr - quite crowded in quest areas. The game is in a good state user-wise - at least as far as overland content is concerned.

Building your own house, great idea from Skyrim.
    Stay safe and healthy.

I think the idea of combat heroes or combat pets could be interesting, but I doubt those would be usable in Cyrodiil. Non-combat pets are already disallowed. It's a performance thing, mainly. I've also seen ideas where a client could set it so that the only mounts that appear from other players is a basic default mount, so the load of all the different mounts would be reduced on the end user. Perhaps even applying basic versions of other players as well in Cyrodiil, or figuring out a way to stream those assets at a varying level.

If Spellcrafting were to become a thing, summons that are spawned through that might remain. There are also multiple sets that spawn combat pets. They aren't limited to certain classes.

Hard mode zones? Back in the Veteran Rank days, when you completed your initial alliance, you then went to the other alliances, and each alliance was a different Veteran Rank. Since I was Pact, that meant Glenumbra was Vet 1, Rivenspire was Vet 3, Auridon was Vet 6, Reaper's March was Vet 10, south Craglorn was Vet 12 and north Craglorn was Vet 14. Veteran Ranks were per character, so all of that leveling had to be done on each character beyond just level 50.

I doubt "Hard mode zones" will be a thing again though. Craglorn was the first Adventure Zone, which was geared toward group exploration. The idea was that the entire zone was marginally harder than regular zones and a group would have more likelihood of success. I remember the final quests of Craglorn (before they redid the zone) consisting of bosses that were almost as hard as Veteran Dungeon bosses, or at least it seemed like that was the case with my group. A second Adventure Zone was going to be released, and it was announced quite far back along with Imperial City and Orsinium. It was going to be Murkmire, and the area originally was a large portion of Black Marsh south of Shadow Fen, possibly encompassing the cities of Helstrom and Gideon. Enough was developed from this original Murkmire that assets were used in Maelstrom Arena, as well as the Dark Brotherhood questline and the Grand Topal Island house. But, the developers decided that Adventure Zones were not a popular thing and they kinda go against the spirit of Elder Scrolls which is freedom of exploration - so Craglorn will likely remain the only Adventure Zone (and even then, they made large portions single-player oriented now)

"Building your own house" - there are several houses on the market that are essentially blank slates, they consist only of land and a few structures. Coldharbour Surreal Estate and Moonsugar Meadow are two that I know of. Is Still-Water Retreat another? - the diversity of buildable assets can allow for a great degree of creativity. I remember seeing someone build an entire chapel out of Daedric Thrones.

    Finally, @ZOS_GregoryV - Thank you.
I simp for vampire lords and Glemyos Wildhorn

Ok so I haven't read this whole thread, but I don't understand why ZOS doesn't take que from GW? Their PvP was on a completely separate server. All skills and sets were unlocked, plus they had some PvP only skills that were only available on that specific server. It kept both the PVE and the PvP servers smoothly.

I'm still waiting to learn how Steam players differ from non-Steam PC players or console players. What if the chart was login data for Playstation only? Could there be a drop in PS players, but an increase in X Box players? Why do people think Steam players have different reactions, values, or interests than people who play on different platforms?

I suppose it's not common knowledge, but the game runs multiple instances of the same zone at any given time. There could be 10 Craglorns running with 100 players each, for a total of 1,000 players, or there could be 2 Craglorns running with 100 players each. Or one Craglorn with 100 players, and one Craglorn with 10 players. The game could appear packed and busy to one player, but dead to another. So the number of players in view at any given time is not a good indicator of overall game health.

Remember when we had many campaigns and they were full.

Well.... if pvp is the only thing you enjoy, yes that's a real problem. This isn't a marvelous game for pvp (or at least, it isn't now, according to friends who only pvp; doesn't include me as I only pve, but yeah, I have heard them for years now) - so that seems to mean you and others in similar situations are going to be very disappointed going forward.

The bottom line problem is that ESO can't seem to manage pvp and pve separately. And THAT is an issue for everyone.

You have made quite the assumption. I was trying to emphasize how much population this game has lost. Wanna PvE?

PvE in this game is either so easy as to not be fun or relies on mechanics that are unique tp the fight and sometimes (often imo) not much fun.

    yeah, problem.

When we had vet zones, pve was fun.

    Fun ... is completely subjective

I keep hearing PvE is no fun because its too easy ... For That Person maybe its not fun. However, PvE has Story. PvE has Content. PvE has Lore. PvE is More than just whacking the bad guys.

And for a lot of players, this makes PvE Fun, even when whacking the mobs and bosses is "Easy".

    IMHO

But that is totally normal and not necessarily a sign of doom - when do people have a lot of time to play and are able to put in the hours to play competitive and be successful?- Basically when they are in school or study - and that is as well the time, where they have the reflexes required for that. But this phase in their life doesn't last for long - they graduate or they might even start a serious relationship - and their focus is shifting, their time is put onto more important things in life - and so they are gone after some years of playing - this is just life and it will happen in a pretty similar way to any of you younger competitive players - life, love, career and different interests will get the hold on you as well - and then you are gone just the same - that's just life.

And some of us retire and then get to play all day.... I discovered computers in 1984 and CRPGs in 1985 - but until I was all done working, I didn't actually play much because I tend to be obsessive about games. I "retired" three different times, and during those "not working" times, I played whatever was available, until I would go back to work for whatever reason.

About the only regret of my entire life is that I wasn't able to have computers in my very young years - because if I had had them when I was late teens/early 20s, I would have definitely gone to work in the industry somehow! Check through the forums. You will see threads warning people not to purchase the game through Steam because of Steam specific problems. You will see threads about working around launching the game through Steam if it was purchased through Steam.
I personally do not see any population decrease for most of the game. There is a drop in full time PvP'rs but the PvE zones seem well populated to me. I started a new account so I could play the game again from the beginning in the same order I did with my first character long long ago. Unless it is a solo instance I see other players all over the place obviously on the same quest I am on. It is rare to go into a delve and not see another player. There are still plenty of players around to sneak in and grab a resource node while you are dealing with near-by mobs.
I've no idea if the population has grown or gotten smaller because there is no way to know how many instances are happening at any one time. I do know I'm seeing plenty of players almost anywhere I go.
and then the parrot said, "must be the water mines green too."

Sometimes I watch a streams of other MMO and see a challenge feature even in story quests, but most importantly that nobody claims that it's too hard - the game just request the basic skills from each player. Here in ESO most of player base have to deal with a difficult level that was made for newbie player who never saw MMORPG before! Just visit the Shada's Tear delve in Craglorn and take a look how mechanics will punish you if you break it, even a traps. I still consider this delve a benchmark for story quests for 50+ lvl. The quests need a "veteran mode" as well as dungeons and trials because it's too stupid to kill almost all bosses for 10 seconds.
About the story and lore: I'm afraid about this aspects in the future after two last zone DLCs that it will be more pop-for-hype, more unlore-tolerated and more kiddish. And this shaking with hints about the continuation of the hidden plot in front of the players' noses is already fed up (it worked in the first time, but now it's annoying).

I must say right away that I don't think the game is dying or something like that. Players come and go, it's okay.
The main problem with the game is that it cannot cope with player overlaps. For example, the complete impossibility of playing, when they give free eso plus, while those who are like me, who pay for the subscription, this time of hell is not compensated in any way.

There are a huge number of other "features" of the game, but this is more my personal opinion.
    1. A terrible class system.
It is especially acute for new players, in particular for those who are used to playing the Warrior archetype.
Over the past few years, I have seen more than once how newbies recreate a bunch of characters, and not who even leave the game, not finding the seemingly most familiar.
The whole idea with two kinds of manna is not bad and interesting, but the fact that in the end the Sorcerer will be the closest to this archetype is just an epic moment.
The main problem here is in the class descriptions when creating a character.

    2. Bug and basic mechanics.
The main mechanics of DD with interrupting the animation of a light attack with a skill - it's a bug, how not to look at it and in any game it would have been fixed long ago, but here it is the basis of the mechanics.

    3. Legal gold selling.
The legal purchase of items from the Crown Store with gold is actually a gold selling. And this is in the game where a lot of this very gold can and should be bought.
It also has a negative impact on bribery for real money. After playing for a couple of months, any player realizes that it is easier to earn 2 million gold than to buy an add-on for real money. Well, I won't tell you about where the sellers of the crown came from.

    4. Always up-to-date equipment.
It's even a little funny when your items remain relevant for several years and the only reason to change them is to change the balance of the game.

    5. Equipment for the entire account.
This, too, does not in any way push you to go and receive things in group content, because it is enough just to transfer all the equipment through the bank. And with the new system, in a few months, or even earlier, the need for at least somewhere for equipment disappears. As a result, only those who have just come into the game and those who have not closed achievements will be floundering in trials.

    6. DPS decides everything
We will not touch upon veteran trials and no die achievements, but in group dungeons, everything is decided by dps. If there is enough dps, then both the hill and the tank are not needed. Well, DLC dungeons need one person. What mechanics can there be if in NoDLC dungeons everything is simply killed in seconds.

    7. Are trials easier than dungeons?
According to the canon of mmo, there is a clear gradation of the complexity of the content.
First, regular dungeons, then dungeons with an increased level of difficulty, then regular raids, then raids with an increased level of difficulty. And then there are mega difficult difficulty levels.
This is not the case at ESO. It's easier and faster to get things from normal trials than from DLC dungeons, there are even times when I think Selena's Web is more difficult than nCR or nHRC.

    8. All in a heap.
I faced this when I returned to the game after 6 years of hiatus.
Firstly, now you start in the very last location, and this is quite difficult, because the quests here are already designed for players with experience.
Secondly, if you found a guide about the sequence, then getting into the first zone of the alliance will be a living hell.
A bunch of quests that lead you to all directions of the world, where to run, what to do is not clear.
Thirdly, the plot simply breaks down. You need to have a titanic endurance to skip the prologues, but if you don't, then you have colossal incidents in the plot. You left Lyris in the cold harbor, it doesn't matter, she stands and gives you a quest.
And if you just took the prologues, but are doing them in order to follow the plot, be prepared that your quest line will stall.
When creating a new character, I just want to have a tick, I want to follow the plot of the game.

    9. Equipment decides.
Equipment is especially felt when the character switches to hero points and enters the battlefields.

    10. If the fear of pay is stuck in textures.
It's even funny. First, to execute the stack command, you must exit the battle. And secondly, pay as for a teleport.

    11. Racial bonuses.
Yes, yes, I am aware that there is supposedly not a strong increase, but the difference between the Imperial mage and the High Elf mage will be very significant. But the empire had enough magicians.

I love how you picked the month that had the biggest spike of active members since launch (+13k) lol
March (before the spike to support your comment) there were 14,755 ppl, last month there were 19,102 a 29% player increase.
If you wanna be super technical about it last year October had 11,161 a 71% increase from last year.

    Love this message!

I am nearing retirement myself and have played fantasy-based games my whole life. First with D&D as a tween, then on to computer games as I got older.

I've played TES Universe games since they came out, and TES5 Skyrim for nine years solid. That community is still running strong with mods, but I finally had enough.

ESO is my first MMO, and probably the only one I will play due to the lore.

I've only been playing ESO for roughly six months. I love the lore and voice acting but, sadly, I am getting a quickly-growing distaste in my mouth for what the developers are doing to the game in regards to breaking more than they fix, one-sided communication, cringe-worthy anticipation of upcoming hot fixes/maintenance/dlcs/etc.

It's a very limited experience for sure, but it is my experience. Based on what I've seen in my short stay here, I personally will be gone when the next TES solo game comes out, or something similar in a fantasy RPG vein.

I think Teso will die closer to 2022. All my friends have left the game, I can't go to raids and pvp because of just such a nasty optimization that I can't describe in words (PC EU). The support does nothing when trying to communicate with them, the quests are boring and made for children (Oh yes, the rating is 18+, but I don't see any blood here, no drinking alcoholics at every turn, the cruelty of NPCs, and of course nudity (THERE IS NOTHING AT ALL WHAT TO WATCH THAT ?!) Well, really, a game for kids rated 18+ It's funny.

Nothing will help this game, some have already shown their true colors, they dont listening players. That's all, I have nothing more to say.

You do realize players have been saying "ESO will die bye the next year" since the game launched in 2014, yes?

@F22nickell - I ran tabletop AD&D games for my daughter and her friends in the mid-70s. Went to a convention once, got to meet Gary Gygax and Ed Greenwood, and bought some really cool stuff from some of the vendors there (husband is quite nice about my gaming hobby, as well as my cross-stitching hobby, always went to conventions with me and let me spend LOTS of money!)

Retirement has been an absolute ton of fun - husband retired in 1994; I retired from day job in 2005, and gave up my website business in 2011 (except for three really good clients/friends - the ones who never want much done with their sites, and pay me on time!) We had horses, rode all over this mountain, hunted deer, elk, and various game birds, camped, hiked, fished....

So while I wish I had more than three or four more decades of life (because for me life has always been fun, and yes I do acknowledge how lucky I have been) I do have enough things to keep me occupied and my mind sharp and functional. Games help with both.

I have been playing since launch in 2015. My play experience has been very positive. Little things i wish they would change/add. Mainly just give players more agency. More options for travel like vampire and werewolf travel forms. Fits with the lore, be relatively easy for the devs since these things are already in the game via NPC's. Pack Master was "Blessed By Hircine" granting him the ability to transform into a regular wolf as well as his werewolf form. Vampire NPC's all throughout the Greymoor DLC are turning into a swarm of bats and appearing across the battlefield. Things like this I wish the devs would make a priority.

Also when your transformed into wolf and you walk into a city you get a bounty that directly effects your characters rep, but realistically no one should be able to recognize you in that form. you should just get attacked instead of a bounty. again just small things that would change the quality of life a ton for players.

No offense but people have been claiming ESO was dying for almost seven years yet the population keeps growing.

    where are said people?

Units sold does not equate to population growth.

My guild has 87 players that have not been on since 2016. To 2018.

Unless zos rewrites the engine, I doubt we will ever see buttery smooth performance. The engine is unable to, or can't use more than one cpu core efficiently. Explains why it runs great in the open world, and why it struggles in cities, group pve, and pvp.
ZoS certainly has the money/resources to do this, but is it cost effective? WoW got a overhaul, and I think it looks and runs great. But there player base is a lot higher as well.

rewritten game engine=new game! Zos didnt write the game engine eso is on....

SWTOR uses the same engine as eso does.

The game will die and people will still play because there is no where else to go.

If you need to watch some nudity, there are a lot of other games and websites for that. 😂

I will admit that for a game with a 18+ content licence, it is rather campy.

I'll just leave it at that.

"I would pay It for support. But since they choosed we are just numbers and not customers, i dont mind if game and zos goes to oblivion"
