Hi
I’ve been searching for days trying to understand how glyphs affect embedded armor traits. I was so happy that I looted at least 20 Truly Superb glyphs that I took the time to examine them closely and apply to my armor and jewelry. To be more clear, this is what I’m wearing now:
Head -Hat of a Mother’s Sorrow (Purple)
Chest - Robe of a Mother’s Sorrow (Purple)
Shoulders - Epaulets of a Mother’s Sorrow (Purple)
Waist - Sash of Necropotence (Green)
Hands - Gloves of Necropotence (Green)
Legs - Breeches of a Mother’s Sorrow (Purple)
Feet - Shoes of Necropotence (Blue)
Neck - Necklace of Mother’s Sorrow (Purple)
Ring1 - Ring of Necropotence (Purple)
Ring2 - Ring of Necropotence (Blue)
Honestly, I was very disappointed that all my glyphs added less than the embedded trait of all my armor! Now, I was single focused to increase my magicka pool (I run 2 pets), but I was gobsmacked that I couldn’t.
Please help this CP358 magsorc 2 pet solo PvE-only total noob with enchantments on armor/jewelry.
Thanks in advance for any comments!

The glyphs that come standard with gear are equivalent to the level of the gear itself, and will upgrade when you upgrade the gear.
Hello
Before looking at Glyphs, I'd improve your mix of Green, Blue and Purple gear. Try to get all to the same colour - ie Purple. You will need to farm a second purple Ring of Necropotence, but all the others you can improve at a crafting station.
Then buy or craft one purple truly superb glyph of magica which you can then check (without applying it), if it improves any of your gear stats. You will then know how many glyphs you need.
I'm wondering what you are using for weapons as a third set? Normally your head and shoulders would be a 'monster set' - two items, with Mother's Sorrow and Necropotence as two five piece sets. Try to ensure all three sets are active when you weapon swop.
Have fun out there and stay safe.
@tmbrinks
Thanks for the great post! I was not sure what to upgrade next. You’ve made that very clear! I’m using 2 MS staffs-inferno gold and lightning purple. So that gives me 7 MS pieces. I know that I need to swap out my head and shoulders for a monster set, but most I’ve seen suggested is from group play. Since I play exclusively solo PvE with pets, I can solo some dungeons, all delves, and a few overland bosses. But I really need some monster set that I can get myself that would ideally add to magicka, etc for my build.
Unfortunately I’ve been spending most of the time leveling; that’s a habit from years of playing MMORGs. So my enchanting skills are at 1 😄. I’m now into the psijic grind at level 4. Maybe I need to convince myself to stop the leveling thing and concentrate on other skills that will definitely matter to me at a higher level.
Again, thanks for your insights.
Hi
I know all about set bonuses
This, easiest if he stand next to you and hand you glyphs, but can also mail.markulrich1966 wrote: »markulrich1966 wrote: »Focus on gold glyphs for weapons and jewelry.
To gold out items (talking about the material, not the glyphs), focus on your weapons, then later the armor. Armor mainly if it has the divines trait, that increases the effect of your mundus stone. Golding out will increase that effect by several percent.
Golding out jewelry using platinum platings is NOT recommended. The effect can be barely noticed, and 4 platings to upgrade a ring cost ~350.000 gold. So just use gold glyphs, not expensive, on purple jewelry.
Alternatively buy gold jewelry from the golden vendor in cyrodiil for Alliance points, or from guildstores for gold. A golden mothers sorrow ring costs 80.000-120.000 gold. Sold by people who bought them with Alliance points. Less popular sets are cheaper, I have seen gold rings of "non- best in slot" sets like Battlefield Acrobat for as low as 26.000 on xbox.
Another way to increase the value of jewelry glyphs is to transmute the jewelry to infused.
This can increase the damage of a spell damage glyph from 174 to 255.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I admit, I know less about the effects of jewelry than armor. At that’s saying something 🙂. I do have 4000 Alliance points, but I’m sure that won’t get me very far.
I applied gold increased damage glyph (that I bought) to my gold MS inferno staff and a (I think) one of my shock glyphs to my purple quest MS staff. I now realize that I really shouldnt have put that white shock glyph on my lightning staff, but I’m assuming that I can buy a gold shock glyph I can just re-enchant it.
My enchanting skills are at 1, so it would take me a lot of time to get them up to snuff. I do have what seemed like hundreds of runes from the runestones, since I’ve collected them from the start of my playing. But I never knew what they were for until last week when I finally looked up their use. 😂. Just call me super noob and I certainly won’t be insulted.
Thanks again.
yes you can replace a white glyph with a better one once you have it.
Quickest way to level up enchanting:
find someone who will craft high level glyphs for you, then deconstruct those.
I think I used approx 200 purple cp160 glyphs made by a friend to level up enchanting from 10 to 50 in half an hour.
Gave him 200 rekuta and a mix of oko (health), makko(magicka) and deni (stamina) and repora (cp160) or rekuta (cp150), do not remember the latter. Best take repora if you have enough.
I am not 100% certain if it were 200 or even less like 60.

It's a good idea to have a plan for your sets, as you can farm particular gear from zones/areas.
For example -
Delve bosses drop a waist or foot..
Overland bosses drop a head, chest, leg, or weapon.
Public dungeon bosses drop a shoulder, hand or weapon.
Chests at Dark Anchors drop a jewelry set piece.
Treasure chests have a chance to grant any set piece that can drop in that zone
I might be able to upgrade my 2 MS pieces myself, but the Necropotence ones I’ll probably have to buy (if they’re ever available). I think I marked the correct upgrades with ***.

I failed with it on more often than I did with it off.

approx 800-900 (high): chest, legs, head
Approx 350 (low): hands, feet, shoulders, waist
So you usually will use gold glyphs on the 3 high value parts, and purple on the 4 low value.
There would be almost no increase from purple to gold glyphs on the low value parts.
Even on the high value parts, you will just gain 300 overall using gold glyphs instead of purple.

Hello
Do you know about the best/ideal traits on gear?
As a general 'Rule of Thumb', my personal choice would be -
Head -Infused - monster set
Shoulders - divines - monster set
Chest - infused - Mother’s Sorrow
Waist -divines - Mother’s Sorrow
Hands - divines - Mother’s Sorrow
Legs - infused - Mother’s Sorrow
Feet - divines - Mother’s Sorrow
Neck - Necklace of Necropotence
Ring1 - Ring of Necropotence
Ring2 - Ring of Necropotence
Weapon 1 - Necropotence
Weapon 2 - Necropotence
More experienced players will advise a variety of weapon traits. Most popular will be Precise, Sharpened and Infused. Can be Destro/Restro or even dual wield swords.
For farming sets I've had good results from Public Dungeons - one in each zone.
Hope this helps

I agree that you should swap your head and shoulder pieces to a different set. I would recommend armor of the trainee until you are ready to give group content a try. Armor of the trainee gives a one piece bonus of over 1400 health to go along with the more than 1400 magicka.
If it turns out you like running dungeons, there are some great sets in the dlc dungeons, but remember that you need to run vet. Easier alternatives are Ilambris (vCoH 1) and Maw of the Infernal (vBC II). Since you mainly run solo, maw is probably the better choice but Ilambris is easier to get.

Weapon 1 - Mother’s Sorrow Inferno
Weapon 2 - Mother’s Sorrow lightening
I'm showing the ideal traits, but you can use whatever you have.
This is a flexible list so that if you later want to farm Maw of the Infernal (vBC II) to replace Trainee. Maw of the Infernal does appear sometimes at the Golden Vendor. Maybe head or shoulders - 200,000 AP or gold. Check Benevolent Bowd on Saturdays.
Khenarthi's Roost is a good zone to farm Armor of the Trainee. Over 70 treasure chest around the coast. Or you can farm easy delves in Auridon for a waist or foot piece of Queen's Elegance. Gives you more spell damage but a less flexible distribution long term.
Ring of Necropotence in purple does drop regularly - just keep farming the dolmens.
Personally I would not 'gold' any of your armour. Just keep them at Purple with Purple enchants. There is benefit from golding weapons.
If you want anything crafted send a message.
Have fun and stay safe.
markulrich1966 wrote: »another point:
I am not certain, if you are aware of it, as you did not mention traits.
Before you start to upgrade your armor, make sure that it all has the divines trait.
It increases the mundus stone effect (for your setup the thief and later the shadow recommended).
You can find mundus stones all over tamriel, it is easier if you are in a guild, as guildhalls usually have a copy of each stone all in one place together.
Thief increases chance to do crit damage, shadow increases the damage of critical attacks and should be used once you reach a crit chance of 60-70%.
It is not that easy to reach a crit chance of 70%, so you need to support it by using all armor pieces in divines.

I'm glad you have got all your pieces together.
CP160 is the maximum level at the moment, so what you have will do, but you may wish to farm for gear in the 'ideal' trait. So, say, if you have a Sash of Mother's Sorrow in well fitted, just run through the delves in Deshaan until a divines sash drops. White glyphs will drop regularly as well - great for decon/levelling enchanting, and of course lots of XP.
To add a bit of variety run through the public dungeons in Deshaan and Rivenspire, and don't forget the dolmens. Even if I'm materials farming or just collecting surveys I find I can never ignore a dolmen. It's all lots of fun.
If you do not need the gold, decon as much gear as you can to level your crafting skills to 50, and get researching ASAP. Do it all on your main character. Using some of your skill points in crafting will help with researching. All my alts have Hirelings skill set at 2/3. I started a new account last November and it took about nine months to get my main alt there to reach Grand Master Crafter. Jewelry was the slowest followed by Enchanting - not buying stuff to decon/just using stuff I found whilst levelling. All crafting is straightforward, Alchemy takes a while to learn the reagent traits; so start on all seven crafts. Doing the daily crafting writs after crafting certification will help with XP/crafting XP/ gold and materials. The minimum I do daily on ESO is completing crating writs on all my CP alts.
Crafting can really soak up your skill points. Around 20 points per trade, but easy to get - I've a level 42 alt (not CP) who's crafting level 50 in all seven trades, with all her main trade skills at 10/10, Hirelings at 2/3, and research finished. I normally do not bother with Motif knowledge unless it is for a Grand Master Crafter title. Only have 3 GMCs - one per account/server.
You do not 'need' crafting at the moment - you can quite happily farm for your gear - but it will help in the long term particularly with gear improvement (green to blue to purple etc). Just take your time and enjoy the learning experience.
The new Item Set Collection system will help you in the long term - it drops for PS4 I think in a week?
Sadly I'm on PC, so unfortunately I can not help - I can not even use a controller!
Have fun and stay safe.

Hello
Did you notice another thread in the forums - Pet Build Idea - Gearsets. One quote from it:
'max mag and spell damage as a combined thing. it doesn't matter which you get, however in general spell damage will be slightly better. I think 10.5 max mag == 1 spell damage.
Then you want at least 55% crit chance buffed, though I prefer 60% with the Shadow mundus. If you don't have that level of crit, don't use Shadow, use Thief instead.'
The sets you are using - Mother's Sorrow and Necropotence - are very good, but I see you still have have 7 x MS? Personally I feel that's a waste - cut it down to 5 pieces. For long term flexibility replace the head and shoulders you have with either Armour of the Trainee or Queen's Elegance. Trainee is easy to farm in Khenarthi's Roost from over 70 treasure chest around the coast. Or you can farm World Bosses and the Public Dungeon in Auridon for a Shoulder and Head piece of Queen's Elegance.
Armor of the Trainee
1 item: Adds 33-1454 Maximum Health
2 items: Adds 33-1454 Maximum Magicka
Queen's Elegance
2 items: Adds 3-129 Spell Damage
If you have more than one alt make sure you farm with one that is CP level - gear drops according to your alts level.
Also watch what the Golden Vendor has for sale each week. It may take a while to find appropriate Head and Shoulder of a monster set - but worth the wait.
I personally would not buy gear at the moment. On PC set item costs are increasing alot due to the new Item Set Collection system, and by farming the gear yourself you will get gear to decon/learn traits/extra gold/more XP to increase your CP level.
*** Head - Hat of a Mother’s Sorrow (Purple)-Invigorating
** Chest - Robe of a Mother’s Sorrow (Purple)-well-fitted
*** Shoulders - Epaulets of a Mother’s Sorrow (Purple)-divines
Waist - Sash of Necropotence (Purple)-divines
* Hands - Gloves of Necropotence (Purple)-impenetrable
Legs - Breeches of a Mother’s Sorrow (Purple)-infused
* Feet - Shoes of Necropotence (Purple)-well-fitted
Neck - Necklace of Mother’s Sorrow (Purple)-arcane
Ring1 - Ring of Necropotence (Purple)-arcane
Ring2 - Ring of Necropotence (Purple)-arcane
Weapon 1 - Inferno Staff of Mother's Sorrow
Weapon 2 - Lightning Staff of Mother's Sorrow
So I would suggest a plan with:
*** Replace with Armour of the Trainee or Queen's Elegance
** Farm for Infused or divines
* Farm for divines
I sat in the Forgotten Crypts in Deshaan during the Witches event for several hours on my second account characters just at the group boss location. With my kitchen timer set at 3 mins, killed the 3 bosses there, and collected some good Mother's Sorrow pieces. Also 5 chests nearby. Only left when my bag was full - really miss ESO+ on that account.
Hope this helps, although others may have different suggestions.
Have fun out there.
