How do so many idiots get to rule in Tamriel?

The Alik'r think killing the undead is wrong if they are from their ancestors.

Now the kind of Western Skyrim is a paranoid fool. I almost want to let his area burn and/or put an arrow in the back of his head, but the quest line doesn't allow that.

For every idiot leader there are legions of weak superstitious submissive types making excuses for them and fawning all over their totally unjustified self confidence, and an equally large mass of people just as idiotic as the leader to do enforcement whenever the sheep get uppity.

Basically, Tamriel is still the dark ages. Shame the Dwemer blasted off into space instead of helping fix things.

    Cowards.

Yeah, AD, who decided letting the new queen in her twenties abruptly supplant her brother right before his coronation (and not put him in therapy, pronto) was a good idea...

The one who gets me the most is Grandmaster Tanval Indoril. His son dies, which is sad, but in his rampage to get revenge, his immediate response is to kidnap another grandmaster's son and hold him hostage. Like, dude, seriously?

I would say that the fact he went wacko means he should not have been the AD king after all. Though I have never seen the backstory of why she was the queen. I always assumed her brother was younger, but that is certainly not completely clear.

The main AD storyline makes it clear he is her younger brother, and only got a place in line for succession after Ayrenn went off to travel the world and dance with bears and make sweet love to khajiits or whatever.

Some say she abdicated her responsibilities, but it also sounded like the king died AFTER she left to sow her wild oats, and coincidentally being away from home when the reining monarch dies doesn't necessarily disqualify an eldest sibling from taking priority.

But succession rules are weird. :p

I’m EP to the core, but I would merrily throw Jorunn under a stampeding wamasu.

There are several others (non-Nords) who would be so much better as the leader of the EP.

Naemon is younger. A quote from The Improved Emperor's Guide to Tamriel:
As the presumed (and now former) heir, Naemon had not anticipated his older sister's return.

I give Naemon a small pass, given that he's even younger than Ayrenn, stepped up to fill her shoes when his father died, underwent the proper training of an heir, and was preparing for his coronation...only to have it yanked away from him when she returned and grudgingly support her only to find out that his wife is leading a rebellion, his wife tried to kill his sister, his sister did kill his wife, and then Ayrenn sends him off to make nice to the Wood elves and gives him the task of proving once and for all that Ayrenn is the better ruler than he will ever be...

Yeah, Naemon tried to overthrow his sister and in the doing proved why he would be a worse ruler after all. But as a tragic figure, I can certainly understand why he did it.

Jorunn, Emeric and Ayrenn are actually not all that bad, compared to many of their scheming underlings, nasty relatives and wannabe usurpers. Ayrenn in particular comes across as a reasonably intelligent and somewhat reluctant leader who means well and is not blindly following tradition. The sad fact that she will be unable to root out the racists among the Thalmor and lose to isolationists and Altmer supremacists in the long run does not make her effort less commendable.

(And I'm not saying that just because she is good looking. That would be awfully shallow of me.)

You might be being a bit harsh on the Thalmor and the AD. I think managing to create a 1000-year period of "staying out of other peoples' business" is a pretty damn good legacy.

Yes, you can understand his motives and why he fell in with the veiled heritance, guess he lent a lot into their politic in the first place too, so an nasty piece of work.

Ayrenn, her weakness is that she is young an naive, her years adventuring teach her a lot of things, intrigues at court was not one of them.

Emeric is the one who irritated me the most. How many of his people end up dead, tortured and dead, turned into vampires, and had their homes destroyed because wise King Emeric can't make a decision?

He takes the first random stranger wandering by, sends them out to fix things and wade through rivers of blood to finally pick who will be his subordinate ruler. He is so pointless that when he finally does make a statement, he gets his entire royal guard killed and himself kidnapped. He makes such a great impression on the Guardian that he isn't allowed to stay in the afterlife. I was so hoping to leave him there so his sister could be in charge.

EDIT: tablet and autocorrect that doesn't

It really says something when Emeric literally fought a war over marrying his wife instead of Ranser's daughter and yet he still ignores her advice about Alikr and runs after old flame Septims Tharn.

I can't stand Emeric. I was Daggerfall Covenant when I first started the game but switched to Aldmeri Dominion long ago due to how much I disliked King Emeric.

Well done the writers for making supporting characters difficult.

Literature is packed with people like this - and worse

If I were to summarise the plot of Shakespeare's "Titus Andronicus " for example I would probably get my account banned!

It makes for much more interesting stories.
