...to whomever designed the quest for A Melodic Mistake (Morrowind quest)...thanks for giving me a massive headache as well as nearly busting my headphones with your stupid tune.

I know the quest was supposed to be about this never-ending tune from some sort of stupid contraption, but now I'm being forced to spend $200 on another pair of Corsair headphones and wait months for it to arrive, despite the fact I am an Amazon Prime member...and also have a ringing headache to boot.

I guess I should be lucky I have other headsets I can use while I wait for my new headphones to arrive. But still, I think it was fairly obvious whoever was in charge of designing this quest had obviously listened to "Let It Go" one too many times and wanted to top Disney for "Melodies That Make You Want To Punch The Nearest Wall". The only real positive thing to come out of this quest is that I at least avoided another "You have an unused Prime benefit" email from Amazon.

That is all. I will now take my permanent ban from the forums. Lord Arena25 out!

Edit: Before we go any further, I would like to kindly point out that by "busting a headset", I mean one or both side of the headphones will not produce any audio. I do not mean literally smashing the headset like the stereotypical angry gamer. Anyone saying I literally smashed my headset is assuming things and probably didn't fully read the post before jumping to conclusions.

You will have to excuse me if I sound like an old grandpa screaming "Get off my lawn, you darn kids", but unfortunately a quest should NEVER give you a ringing headache, even if your sound is turned all the way down. And it should NEVER bust a headset, period, especially a headset that is as good as the ones made by Corsair.

you.. may need anger management. because there are no sounds that would break a headset on their own in this game, which means you broke your own headset. also, unless there is a recent bug or something (which is possible) or you have a particular sensitivity to sounds - that quest should not have been headache inducing.

By "break/busted a headset", I mean there is no sound emanating from one side of the headphones. This happened multiple times with Sennheiser headphones, and it's why I switched to Corsair (plus, one of the gaming organizations I follow is sponsored by Corsair). I can't even remember the last time I broke one of my headsets by literally smashing it.

Also, back in the days I had Sennheiser headphones, Kotu Gavas sound has busted my earphones once or twice, due to some high-pitched sound it made (I don't think it makes it anymore though).

That sounds (hehe) like your volume is way too high or something else is breaking your headphones. Or the headphones were just faulty to begin with and died sooner than expected, which is always a possibility even with good brands.

Because we can't understand how a game sound could possibly break a headphone.

In other words, you original post wasn't clear, and had hints of violence/anger in it. So some people assumed that's what broke the headphones. (but yeah, it's also a side-effect of just reading the first post, then responding.)

This usually happens with older speakers/audio devices, but sometimes if a sound is too high-pitched/loud/high-tone, it can cause certain wires/components of a audio device to fray/break/catch fire, which can render an device useless. This usually happens with old audio devices when subjected to very loud/high pitched "new sounds", but even newer devices can suffer from this problem.

As an example, I think in the music video for "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)" by the Beastie Boys, the video featured an old jukebox which was set on fire to suggest that the music was too loud. I'm not gonna link the music video here because of forum rules, but if you want to look it up, just search the music video on YouTube and skip to 2:44 in the video.

As another example, the Mythbusters in one of their sound tests accidentally overloaded a so-called "Jukebox On Wheels" and caused some electrical fires. I can't remember the exact episode, but I think it had something to do with gangsters, guns, and loud sound.

You were unlucky. In-game sound is not going to break a set of headphones unless you have it stupidly loud.

It’s been a while since I did that particular quest, but there is definitely a bug where cinematic audio ignores the master control volume of the game. So much for “master.” I wonder what else in the game isn’t affected.

After hearing the Greymoor video at 100 when expected it to be 10, I can sympathize with OP.

because sounds from the game do NOT break headphones. at least not even semi decent headphones being used appropriately. its possible that this particular pair was already breaking down.

its not that sounds cannot break things, its that from my experience at least there aren't any of those sounds in this game when played at a normal volume.

and if the quest itself is bugged (again - possible, dragon roars didn't used to persist even after dragon is dead, but they started to recently) - that is not a matter of a person originally designing that quest, but that SHOULD be reported in a bug report forum.

Seeing how so many people already insinuated that something else might have been involved here, I'm not going to go down that road again. But I have to admit that I can hardly imagine (as others have pointed out) that game sounds could be able to break a headphone. I have these really old headphones from Sennheiser, which, as I have gathered, you don't seem to think too highly of, and boy, has this thing been through a lot over the years. Must be nearly 15 years old by now, and even though I have replaced it with a newer, better device by now, they still work perfectly, despite everything they have already experienced. So I'm going to go ahead and say that you probably just had bad luck with those headphones and that maybe they were in some way or other faulty to begin with - as I really absolutely can't believe that the game sound could be responsible for this.

(Also as an unrelated side note: I'm not a native english speaker, so sorry that the singular/plural for "headphone" is all over the place here. Stuff like that always really confuses me and I have no idea what is actually correct here).

I figured I'd address your side note. Headphones is one of those words where the singular and the plural are the same like the words news or series. The reason for the 's' in the singular is because they're technically a pair of speakers that you wear.

I think your soundcard is breaking your headphones.

If the impedance is mismatched, (the headphones don't provide enough resistance) the signal could blow them out.

    The opposite is possible too.

    What is your soundcard?

Also, it's more likely that there was stress on the cables that caused the problem.

After breaking 4 Headsets in two years I figured out it was me. Lets see, Logitech, Corsair, Sennheiser, and another one i don't remember the name of. I bought a $15 headphone stand and my last set have lasted more than a year.

It was placing the headphones on the desk after each use that was stressing the connections in the ear cups.

I have done all the quests in Morrowind and cannot recall any issues with my headset at the time. I think it was a corsair at the time, but use Razer now.

Also, most Amazon Prime purchases I have made arrive within the normal 2 day ordering time frame. Only items that the true vendor does not have in stock have later delivery times listed. A number of Best Buy stores near me have various Corsair headsets in stock with other Corsair headsets available for Jun 4-8 delivery. Though the Amazon Prime thing is rather off-topic.

I have had one headset that actually broke. One side detached but it was years old. I had another that was wireless where the "wired" connection stopped making a connection so the battery would not charge nor could it be powered by the charging cord. Both lasted years. I had a third that was stollen when my home was broken into.

But yes, most lasted a long time, assuming the one that was stolen had a long life. It replaced the one that no longer charged,

Mmmmm, something is up with your sound settings or your hearing I think. A new expensive pair of headphones is not going to change anything. Sony mdr-xd100 no problems here. There is a secondary way of solving that quest without sound, the red lights turn yellow when they are in the right position. The noise is also fairly deep iirc, not high pitched and piercing. I don’t think it’s the game in this case.
