Free-Up Character Names

ESO devs need to consider releasing long unused character names. This game is now 6 years old and people who created characters in the first week of the game and never played again still have character names reserved all these years later. Most MMO's have addressed these issues with freeing up names after they have been labeled as inactive for a determinant amount of time. If an account has not been played in 3+ years (half this game's lifespan) then that should be a pretty good conversation starter for releasing names.

To be sure I am not asking that anybody who has characters 3 years old & inactive should have all their names wiped but if somebody goes and attempts to make a character with that name then it should be stripped.

PLUS lets be honest ZOS.. this will give you an influx of name change cash. You love cash.

    I can only imagine this working out well...

    "I was a beta tester who just came back to see how the game is doing and my character names are gone! What's going on? ZOS, you better give me my character names back!"

    As someone who does get attached to my characters, I can sympathize with the players who might be disappointed by changes. I mean, the character stats might stay the same, but if I somehow "lost" the name Varanis Arano after playing her for years and had to rename her, she'd feel like a different character entirely.

    And no, I don't think we've got a severe lack of available names such that we need to release "inactive" character names. That's assuming that the name you want is one of those "inactive" characters in the first place.

    I also think it would be unnecessary to give up names. Due to being able to add a space and hyphen, you can work out a name of just about anything you might wish. I do empathize with people that have to alter their favorite name, but having names 'taken' is just something that comes with online gaming.

    Nah... Just be creative and don't pick the usual common names. There's no need to delete names from already existing characters.

    No. Just use a different name. There are plenty that you can make.

    No, ZOS shouldn’t take away names from players....

    Instead you need to be creative and come up with a name yourself.

    Stop trying to take someone elses character name through such a shady tactic.

    ESO has some of the most liberal rules on names that it should not be that hard to find the name, albeit with a bit of creative spelling. They allow blank spaces. They allow hyphens. I wanted to name a character Victor, it was taken. But Vic-tor worked just fine.

    Just be creative.

    Sorry, not interested in adding hyphens and awful looking names with accents: æÄÉôöòâäå

    The irony in that all of you posting never meet these thresholds because you stay active in the game to a degree that would never see a name be freed up.

    Literally we are speaking about YEARS here of inactivity.. day 1 type inactivity. Thats absurd. This game is also played on a mega server. Meaning literally every character ever played on NA or EU you must compete for names with even if somebody dropped this game week 1, trust me... A LOT of people dropped this buggy mess and never came back.

    I think the least of your concerns should be placating people who quit the game 6 years ago but helping those who want to play it in this decade. A lot of these posts are related to empathetic "how would I feel if my name was taken?" type responses. Again, do you expect to not login to ESO for 3+ years? Sorry there should be a statute and if you login 4-5 years later and your name is gone, you expect it.

    For the sake of discussion...

    You have pointed out that you are not flexible on this issue, so the actual spelling of a name rather than the sound or phonics of the name are what seem to be important. To this I would ask - Why ?

    Additionally, what makes you think that even if such a purge is done that whatever your preferred name with the accurate spelling would become available ?

    I've had the name I used in my example - Vic-tor - for 5 years. It is not a character I play regularly. When I first started playing ESO you began inside the wailing prison. I saw characters in the prison of level 5 - 10 and sometimes higher and realized that I could simply fight a lot of daedra and increase my level before leaving ( back then the game was Not adjusted to level). The problem - accumulating too much stuff filled my bag. As a new player, wanting to turn everything I could into gold, and finding out I could not mail to characters on my own account, I solved the issue.

    I bought a second account. I could fill up my bag, sort what I wanted to keep and mail stuff to Vic-tor to be sold at a vendor. So, Vic-tor is still around. I log in on it every day for the login freebies ( because I just never know when I might want to start playing the account ). But that's it. It's not a character that is active in the game, which is what you want to purge. But your purge would not touch Vic-tor. I would venture that there are probably a lot of players who have second accounts in a similar status.

    If someone actually wanted that name with that spelling they still could not get it.

    I just don't see how your proposal would have the effectiveness you think it would. After all, Zos is not going to post a list and say " these names in these specific spellings are now available'.

    IMHO

    Normally, when one asks for names to be released, often they are seeking very common, cliche and specific name theme. Don't even have to follow traditional spelling to achieve the articulation, annunciation and pronunciation one wishes, simple word play can go a very long way

    Examples of common fantasy / cliche names I've seen come and go in ESO with unique word play since 2015:
    Ash Falls = Ashe Fawls
    Dark Rain = Darque Rayen (Reign)
    Damien Dark = Dameon Darque
    Violence = Viola Lance
    Decay = D. Kaye / Dee Kay
    Torrent = Tor Ennt
    Graverobber/digger = Phyllis (Phillip) Graves / Douglas Graves / Robin Graves

    It is all luck of the draw really. Just cause there is a name you want doesn't mean that it isn't being actively used. You might be active during one time set, and the one who has the name you really want might be active during another and rarely if ever cross each other's path, cause, one player's bed time is another player's prime time.

    Just add a Surname or a title. Oddly enough calling yourself Lady or Lord is not against naming rules, King or Queen is prohibited though. A well placed spacer punctuation does wonders.

    You expect to lose your character names if you are gone for several years.
    That is hardly a universal assumption. It would be different if ESO had been designed this way from the beginning, but It's not and as it is, this feels like you wanting to retroactively enforce a brand new statute just so you can get a name you assume is "inactive". If its not, you'll still be SOL...

    Also, just because I don't intend to be inactive for several years doesn't mean I haven't taken notice of a number of forum posts from people who have and came back, nor that I can't guess the likely reaction of players who come back only to discover that ZOS has introduced a brand new statue of limitations on names.

    New and existing players have plenty of options for unique names even without resorting to hyphens and special characters. Well, unless you were going for something like Drizzt Do'Urden - I imagine that just about every variation on that name is taken by now. :)

    We can name our characters in so many ways, that I don't see a need for stripping character names. Especially Khajiit and Argonian names are so colorful and with so many options. Just be more creative instead to ask for character name wipes.

    No, for someone returning from a long hiatus, it'd suck to have to change character names. I had a 1 year hiatus and then came back to play full time, no way I'd start playing again if I'd lose my character names from that.

    And as others have said, hyphens etc are a great way of getting the name you want. I tend to use fairly common names and only first names. I've been able to add a hyphen to one or more of the letters and make the name without it feeling off to me very recently. My latest character was called Eir, but that was obviously taken in that form, Èír however was not and I never notice those hyphens at all.

    You don't actually need to be all that creative to get around a name being taken. Certainly not as creative as you would in most other MMOs which don't allow spaces or special characters.

    In most cases it's as simple as adding a family name or a title. If "Harry" is taken, call him "Harry Jones" or "Cheesemonger Harry". Because of that, even after six years we're still nowhere near having to struggle with trying to create the 957,453rd variation of the name Legolas.

    Given ZOS use the character name as the unique identifier for that character, you’re essentially demanding they delete all characters with names you want.

    It’s a dumbarse and rude idea as no matter how long a player has been away from the game, they should always be welcome back.

    Use your imagination to come up with a better name than your clearly unimaginative choice... I mean if someone else thought it up six years ago, you’re coming very late to the party....

    I give my characters name and surname and never had problems like this. I like to use in lore names, so usually I just combine names and surnames of some npcs that I liked from past TES games. It works every time.

    I still wish I had held onto some of the common in demand names on PC EU when I reserved it in early access. I could sell them for a lot of gold now.

    As others have said ZOS is unlikely to clear names as it's a massive turn off to a returning players if they've lost their character names. Also there are so many possible names with how ESO's naming rules are set we really are not running out of names.
