Why do ESO players get so salty in PVP?

✭✭This kind of behavior is easy to prove and moderate. Personally, I think it's a mistake for ZOS to turn a deaf ear. There is simply no good reason to allow it to be tolerated. If a modicum of civility where enforced, PVP population would increase, and that would benefit everyone involved.2 -

I think these are inhibitors for sure. I've played many player vs player games and the vitriol is fairly consistent. Now I will say ESO is a bit unique in the things it demands in order to obtain certain achievements such as emp. Barring cheese methods and workarounds, having to quite literally stay up for 3 days (or more) straight with little breaks is bound to make even the most level headed person a mess. There are very real cognitive and emotional issues from having that little of sleep in an environment of constant competition and toxicity. Not to mention the physical risks one can face from that habit like diabetes. And often full time PvPers do this on multiple occasions. Then add to these factors a game that often fails to respond to your imput at crucial moments, and knowing the enemies (that by now you've built up a nemesis relationship with and WILL teabag and shame message you if you die by them) is bound to give anyone a consistent level of anxiety and pent up emotions. And again this dynamic for many PvPers is a daily experience rather than the rarity. And of coarse this sort of thing isn't limited to PvP. I've been in many trial groups that mirror the same level of anxiety and toxicity. Having run the same content over and over and failed over and over. It's difficult to not start pointing fingers and becoming overly critical. All this to say, there are a massive amount of issues and demands put on us by the game and no doubt ones we put on ourselves. So the next time you encounter this OP (and you will!) keep all these things in mind, shrug your shoulders, and move on.1 -

✭✭✭Trash/Smack talking Isn't just seen in "PvP" it is everywhere. I've seen it in dungeons, trials and i'm sure it happens while gathering.
The good thing about trash talk you can just ignore it. You don't have to respond to it, and it is very simple to add players to your ignore list. Trash talk means nothing unless you make it something.

Just the other day I was playing in a BG and we kept dying. One player kept crying in chat, "You guys are a bunch of idiots... ", "ESO quit grouping me with a bunch of ***.... ".
I checked his score and replied, "<players name> please quit typing, you only have 1 kill".

Mostly because of the mechanics of the game, you can create builds that are extremely advantaged in some way: survivability, damage, permanently invisible, etc. I especially find that being able to spam invisibility at-will in PvP is especially conducive to toxic behavior.
2) A lot of people who play PvP this game, especially the people who play this game a lot, have emotional problems. ESO is a good mix of escapism while still being social, but not too social if you don't want it to be, but also very social if you want it to be. You never feel alone in Cyrodiil, but you also don't have to be committed to a guild or voice chat. But you can be if you want to be.
I have been in either of these categories at different times over the last 5 years. Sometimes both. Now I mostly just play to get event tickets, ever hoping that the "next patch" will bring some improvements or re-balancing to make me more interested in the game again.2 -

One has to understand these people are mentally immature as well as a very bad player. Since they can not play well they try to PvP in chat. The best thing to do is not reply to their comments at all. That gives them a reason to climb the stairs, leave them parent's basement, and complain to said parents because some big bad bully beat them up in Player vs Player.0 -

If ZOS or any other game with PvP can't police it, they should remove PvP. It just becomes a skid row of people like it, eventually ruining the community.
Then people wonder why the PvP population is so low and they start trying to force PvP everywhere. We've already seen it on the forums.

Best is to play offline. I had a conversation with Golum (PC EU Alessia bridge pusher) whilst I was on offline, he replied by jumping for yes and tbagging for no. We had a lovely conversation about fish, ad leaders and lotr lore.0 -

✭✭Fun fact: No matter your skill level, good, bad, godly or potato; once you start getting rage whispers, you won. Doesn't matter the environment either. Rage whispers happen equally across PvE as well.

That is often the same in PVP no matter the game, it is certainly not limited to ESO. If you beat someone in a match it could never be because you were more skilled / lucky it is always because you hacked, are using aimbots, are using the flavour of the month build, you have no life or any other excuse than you simply out played them.

Spoiled little brats, self-proclaimed kings in life and tryhards in game, cant handle their lack of skill and you, their enemy, dont give them the candy they want from you, so they start screaming like babies.

PVP makes people angry. It hurts their pride, and hate whispers are common enough a concept for people to feel comfortable playing into the stereotype.
That said, while obviously the whisper is completely unreasonable, you don't get to play the 'it's a PvE game' card when engaging in PvP content. That's silly. I'm assuming this was random BG based on the exp comment, and you do have to at least be willing to give it your best shot if you go for group PVP play to get some exp! Only fair towards other players. If this was a guy you fought, then it is just the hurt ego.
A lot of times it's PvP players who win, who are also toxic. As if ganking someone doesn't satisfy their need to humiliate, they feel they have to go further and really drive griefing home.
The very reason I steer clear of PvP now days, I don't want any reason to be angry. I'm here to have fun, not to have some child try to verbally abuse me while my intent is to enjoy myself.
The days of trolling and griefing are going to come to an end. What these people do not understand beyond not being able to grasp that their behavior is not acceptable, is that fact that the developers of games are here to make money, bottom line. That means anything that negatively affects their profit will be removed.
EA recently made a big stand against bad behavior in banning one of their pro players, permanently, forever, from all EA content.

They go even further however, changing their TOS so that it is far more strict in regards to people who behave badly, and increasing the number of people who get banned.
Developers are not going to put up with bad, toxic, griefing behavior anymore, the writing is on the wall. If you cannot control your emotions, win or lose, PVE or PvP then there will come a time when you are removed, banned and can no longer play games you might really truly miss.1 -

I am not even a serious PvPer but I noticed you said you were just there for your XP. Perhaps you did this but you should at least try and be competitive. Again maybe you have a PvP set or different skills when in PvP and whatnot. It's frustrating to people when others don't give a darn.
What if he walked into your PVE trial group and didn't try?

✭Its because people are trash. People will saying anything when they know the person on the other end cant reach through the internet and break their jaw. Almost every game with PvP involved this happens.
People who clearly never got their bell rung in real life. Probably never learned an ounce of respect from their parents, teachers, coaches, etc.
I get hate tells all the time. Its ridiculous. It comes from bad players who want to blame everyone else for their short comings. It comes from good players who are so used to 1vXing that they have the delusion they are some sort of god so when you kill them in a fair fight they lose their minds on you. People just suck.
I can only imagine these people in real life. The anonymity of gaming amplifies these peoples behaviors and attitudes.
What can you do though? Block them is really it. If its super messed up you can report but they will be back most likely.
