Why do ESO players get so salty in PVP?

Some people are just jerks. It’s not exclusive to pvp, It’s just as common in elite pve guilds and groups.

I bet that guy is a jerk at work, and at the bank, and to customer service agents, And coworkers, and to anyone whenever things don’t go as he things they should.

I'm 40 and naturally competitive (with everything I do pretty much). Grew up going to the arcade, was a big time street fighter player as a kid. I even love sprinting with my 10 year old daughter, that aside, it really does get under my skin sometimes when folks come in PVP and can get by with a "casual easy mode build and/or troll build". However, I don't salt whisper anyone or respond to anyone salty whispering me (most of the time). I get it, they are in their feels about something that is in the game that allow other people to use. It's just natural for some to allow their anger to get the best of them and just type in out lol..

Best bet is to not respond and ignore, or you can just play along. My best response for someone salty whispering me, if I'm up to it, is "You sound like you need some milk..".

People have never played any fighting games it seems. I've never had so many salty whispers in any other game compared to ESO.

Well i assume it is only a minority of toxic players. I know good people all over the factions, while in every faction you see the allways same keyboard warriors spaming zonechat with insults as soon as their faction is getting under pressure.

Me personaly i find such whispers quiet amusing, tough i dont get that many. Someone should create an endles thread for funy chat screenshots.

I had a guy get real salty saying basically I'm just as bad in pve as PvP bc I ran from a 1v1 that would've taken 30+min to see who would've won. Like I'm not wasting that much time on 1v1. Just have to ignore/block and move on.

No! It's not. It's main focus was for PvP.
That's why the combat is like this...

For a PvE game, it's horribly done. Imao

Really? I mean really? Have you played any of the other TES games in your life? They tried to mimic as much as they could. All TES games are aim combat not tab targetting. This is a PvE based game with a PvP mini game tacked on. The problem is, just like every other PvE based MMO with PvP added on. They try to balance the two and it's impossible to do.

During the Mayhem Event I decided to get Event tickets...so I tried the 5 BG quest.

I remember a player on my team being very Salty with me when I showed up in BG Deathmatch with my crafter in a Robe, no weapon or skills ... I was running around fist fighting people while he was throwing salt like the ground was frozen and his elderly grandma needed to pass by safely.

Boy was he ever pissed... I almost felt bad...

    RolePlayers gonna RP...

How could my crafter ever pick up a weapon and fight... he was just in it for the sweet Legion Zero Styles !

Honestly I still don't understand PvP in this game and why its so bad but this is one of the many players in ESO that Zenimax refuses to take action. Atleast in Siege and Overwatch, toxic players like these get permabanned or atleast a suspension. This is a PvE game, and I just wanted my exp, lmao.
    [Edited to remove profanity bypass]

    This is not PVE game.

As for the toxicity, it mostly comes from players who win through build, glitch abuse or cheeze tactics so when you counter that because you know how that cheeze works, they become extremely salty... really good players rely on timings, counter-attacks and personal skill and so they always know that they were defeated because of own mistakes not because their cookie cutter build didn't worked like expected.

Use Offline mode during PVP, it eliminates the hate whispers. If the jerk goes to zone chat put them on ignore. Trust me the ones who go to zone chat to insult will be on a lot of players ignore lists.

Like other posters have said, just ignore and move on or you could be like me and laugh at their salty tears knowing you made someone really mad in rl over a game. >:)

    Raisin wrote: »
That said, while obviously the whisper is completely unreasonable, you don't get to play the 'it's a PvE game' card when engaging in PvP content. That's silly.

I wouldn't get this mad over a PvE focused game to be honest. Every content Zenimax has released is all PvE content, nothing to be competitive about.

Well, this might be the reason you got those responses.
I 100% agree with you on your initial post, but if you go into PvP with this type of mindset it's only expected ppl will rage at you, specifically your team mates, just like i would be called leaching scrub, no brain noob... if i went to Vet PvE content on my all inpen ST burst build that deals 15 dps, but hey i do it in bursts...lol.
Also, some PvP ppl live in this game, so yea they're quite competitive.

Case in point making a thread like this just to bait attention.
By the way you are avoiding the censor by posting banned words in an image.

You were PvPing, so that obviously isn't completely accurate.

It's also not just PvP. PvE can be rough as well.

Never had any salty PVP whispers, probably because I'm not that good at it and don't upset enough people lol

Would take any salty whispers as a sign you're doing something right though, or perhaps have a cheese build that is annoying. One of the two.

I thought I finally got a hate whisper the other day. Nope. I still suck.

It’s because of the naming and shaming policy. It protects the tools and makes sure people get away with stuff anonymously.
Looking for any guildies I used to play with:
    Havoc Warhammer - Alair
LoC EQ2 - Mayi and Iskiab
PRX and Tabula Rasa - Rift - Iskiab
Or anyone else I used to play games with in guilds I’ve forgotten

I understand all the salt in pvp, though I've never written any hate whispers myself. What I do not get is this "naming and shaming" policy bs. If they decided to make themselves look like idiots why not let everyone know lol. C - consequences.

multiple reasons I would guess, some people are young and dumb, some are just plain dumb, some might be normally reasonable people who have just had a bad day, some people may just be tired, some send hate tells so a friend can gank when you go to replay (if you do) , some send hate tells because they can and find it amusing, some do it because it can be perceived as part of the culture, and some people are just angry. i myself dont think there is one answer to the question, after all a group is made up of individuals and each person operates different and has a different view on things.

Lets face facts here we play a MMORPG and I would say 99.9% of the player base would be classed as geeks/nerds irl which is why the majority of the player base is actually quite nice. Its the 00.1% who take their hurt and anger from their real life and portray that over the keyboard as I suppose it makes them feel better or gives them a bit of power, or just have no social skills and again over the keyboard can be that tough guy they can never be in real life.

Here's an example there was a EU PC player who originally started off posting youtube videos and it was quite clear that they was very good at the game so I started to pay interest and follow them for advice etc, but the the longer I played in ESO the more I got to see how toxic this player actually was in chat etc until I ended up with the opinion that this player is a total knob, then they started to stream with a live face feed, and well all I can say is :D:D:D

So in short if anyone sends hate or gobbs off in chat etc just picture them as someone who has social problems or have a disability and move on. Dont take them to heart and just collect hate /w and share them with your friends and have a good laugh, I can have a month break from the game jump on discord with friends go kill a few players in Cyro and instantly get hate /w just because of my @name its hilarious.

You can deny the truth all you want. PvP was the end game market for this game at launch. Sometime down the line they shifted focus to pve because they broke cyrodiil. xD

Same happened to me in IC. I killed a guy and then he whispered me, calling me names, that I am a trash and autistic player who spams skills. I asked who the hell he was and he told me to go and... myself etc etc although I never spoke to him nor did anything to him before. Seems like there are a lot of people with empty lives who feel important by being good in pvp in a mmo game.

    PVPers are mostly kids

90-95% of players in PVP are pretty chill (just like in real life) and I’d venture a guess that the average age of a regular Cyrodiil player (on XBox anyway) is between 25 and 30 years old.

So, just like real life, just ignore the 5 to 10% of morons that populate this planet. This isn’t a ESO PVP issue. It’s a everywhere in life issue. For what it’s worth there are just as many, if not more, absurdly salty PVErs as well.

My guess would be they're one of those who used to enter BGs only with team mates but now can't because the changes and are extra salty because they have to play with "noobs", ie people who aren't necessarily very good at pvp.

it is just a common behavior for pvp crowd in any game

competition adrenaline + interner anonymity and protection
