Player Name Tags

Anyone else feel like this should be implemented? Can't put my finger on it, but I sometimes feel asthough I'm in this game alone when going through a town as I think everyone is an NPC until I actively hover over someone. Could have sworn that in Beta, player name tags were implemented as I thought it was pretty neat to see PC name tags in Cyrodill.

    It's not really necessary for me, imagine if we all walked around with our names over our heads in rl. I don't feel alone at all, you are just use to the standard MMO, I love the uncluttered scenery.

    This is also how this Khajiit feels like. It is kind of like a single player game, but one needs to interactive with someone, there are around. Also, there are to many non lore friendly names and rather not to see them at all. No name tags please.

  • Renuvasb14_ESO
    Hmm. Maybe someone will be able to create an add-on and be my hero someday. If it is at all possible. =(

    Definitely very strongly against nameplates.

    I don't want to be bombarded with "xXxPaNdAmUtHaHyAwLlxXx!" when I am running around in an otherwise immersive environment.

    Not having them makes people keep their own puerile mental pollution to themselves.

    Turn on player health bars. It helps somewhat.

    I totally support you OP.

    They should add the OPTION to turn it ON/OFF , like they do to so many other things.

    People who want it , will use it , those who dont , wont , so simple.

    For for i have health bars turned ON , makes it quite easy to see who is who.

    Which means we do not need nameplates to see who is who.

    For me personally, I think the game is better for not having nameplates. It's not exactly difficult to tell a pc from an npc.

    It's also fun to occasionally roleplay an npc, see how many people you can fool who aren't paying attention. :D Fun times.
  • DesertYeti
    Easy enough to get peoples names. Just mouse over them. Otherwise, just do as others have suggested and show player health or just wait for someone to make a mod.

    The targeted enemy shows the name. I don't see why anything else is needed.

    I implement AOs to remove as much as possible. The only thing on my screen is the targeted enemy health bar and my character's M/H/S. I turn off everything else. That includes all of the glowing auras, enemy bars, quest givers, group / follower markers, fallen allies.... I wish I could turn off those stupid red danger spots that pop up when the enemy is doing a power attack.

    However, if it's optional and doesn't grant any advantage over other players then I'm all for it.

    NOTE - Very minor spoiler about Kenarthi's Roost:

    At the end of the main Kenarthi's Roost quest line, I was really impressed and genuinely moved when the main NPCs I'd got to know assembled on the beach to see me off as I journeyed onward to Vukhel Guard.
    I moused over each of them them to check their names and get their farewell messages.
    It was really touching and immersive - until I moused over a player called '*** Shirt'.
    Sort of spoilt the mood somewhat!
    So, no name tags please.
    Generally, I find it easy to distinguish an NPC (standing around or doing something sensible ie role playing) from a player character (running like an idiot, jumping off walls and balconies, or looking vacantly into space ie acting like someone playing a game).
    I would not vote for turning off players' name tags. I'd vote for turning off players full stop. :D

    Guild Wars 1 had it right!

    But to be serious: I've no real objection about name tags, guild tags, whatever, as long as they are optional. I want immersion, not information. I want to role play, not game play. But for those who need it , provide it. (Though I think 'no tags' should be default and can be turned on if wanted.)

    EDIT: The rude bit of the Player name above has been censored by the forum filter. It's a pity the game doesn't do that too. Anyway, reading the name in game created a Completely Unpleasant Moment. ;)

    I would really like there to be someone at Zenimax to look at each name as people create their characters and say "Nope - too silly! Try again"

    Having said that, my character name (Asdedas Adornale) is a bit silly. Well, I like to think its clever and witty.

    This should be an option. I understand people don't want this and that is great. I respect their opinion. Why people that do want it are shut out of the option is baffling. People that don't want it are welcome to shut it off or never turn it on. I want name plates and guild names. You can't even tell if someone is in a guild in this game. That is just crazy IMO. How do you promote your guild if no one see's you out and about? In PvP is it important to have your tag showing so future recruits can see your out there.

    Because options can be forced on for those do not want it, thus it is better to never get it started in the 1st place.

    At first I missed nameplates but now I am used to mousing over a player to see their name and I prefer it - if I want to know their name I know what to do, if I don't, I don't have to see it
    I lyke not this quill.

    I've come to like not seeing the vile and immature names people come up with for their characters. However, that doesn't mean I'm going to tell people who would like the option that they can't have it because I don't need it.
  • Renuvasb14_ESO
    I can see the benefits/negative aspects of name plates, but please have it as an option that the subscriber can decide on. Hate going into a group of people and having the hardest time trying to find someone. I don't instantly take photographic pictures in my head on who is wearing which armor. If I'm casting a ground based AoE and need the mouse to target an area, I can't be hovering over people and wasting valuable moments hoping I eventually hover over the person I'm interested in finding. Doesn't seem like much, but as far as ease of playing, it makes a difference to me.

    I am for anything being implemented that;

    1) is not forced but is an option to the players to use or not.

    and

    2) doesn't impact other players ability to be competitive.

    So yes I would like this as a toggle 'on/off' option because I could turn it off if I so chose to.

    Same with chat bubbles and other UI niceties. For this game I want immersion, so I would have it all turned off. But I can understand others wanting this implemented and it should be.

    Totally agree with op. No tags makes it harder to organize groups, makes you feel like you're alone amongst Npc instead of in a world with players and you don't see familiar names. Kills community to not have them. At least give the options for people who want them.

    I also prefer the lack of name tags. As a rule:
    * If "it's" walking, it's an NPC
    * If "it's" running, it's another player

    This thread again? Not going to happen, name tags goes against Zeni vision of "immersion" and there will be no add-on because the API doesn't allows for it.

    I'm sorry, what? How are options a bad thing, and how are options "forced" on you? The very definition of options is that you can choose whether or not you want do something.

    please no nametags! I love the minimalistic interface! I also cannot STAND when I'm exploring an area and PatioFurniture, ArseWipe, BigMuscleDood and WalMart run by. Yes I saw all those names in general chat. Glad I don't have the displeasure of seeing them in big flashy letters on the screen...

    Can't one MMO be different from the rest... people are just used to them. I'd rather people become clever/creative without them.

    @lioslinn - Optional, it's on for me, not on for others who want the minimalistic interface. Please realize how I or others clutter our screens is up to us. We don't expect or want you to have the same if you don't want it. For that matter, those of us who have it turned on, might just want to turn it off again after all...

    It's like having the option of playing the game on normal or hardcore, most people will obviously choose normal mode, but the devs wants to force us to choose hardcore mode, that's why there's no option for nametags. It's game design, it makes things harder, yes, but thats how the devs want us to play.

    You're comparing gameplay difficulty to game aesthetics? That comparison seriously made no sense whatsoever. Nameplates in no way shape or form change the difficulty of a game, its a convenience option and nothing more.
