Banning Addons?

I'd be fine with them removing addons...if they integrated certain addons into the game.

Literally 5 minutes into the game I logged off and went on a thorough addon hunt. The default UI for this game is absolutely atrocious imo.

It was designed to be minimalist like the TES games, and like them the extra features that some players (not all) want was intended to be provided by addons. It was a fundamental request from TES players that a meaningful addon system should be incorporated into the base game, without it a lot of Skyrim etc veterans wouldn't have tried out ESO. Of course, ESO is not intended to be a traditional MMORPG and so people looking for a traditional MMORPG UI will find it lacking - on purpose.

There's a stark difference between minimalist and bare-bones. ESO lands on the latter, because why spend money on adding basic qol ui things when your community can do it for free? Pretty much the exact same thought process Bethesda has had for years now. Only it seems that recently they've forgotten that it's their community and modders which have been the ones keeping the series going, hence the absolute failure that is Fallout 76, and rightfully so. But i digress.

The guild trader UI is pretty much the prime example in this game of how bad it is. Inventory UI coming second. The lack of basic filters and search functions is just...painful. If Zenimax banned all addons they'd be shooting themselves in...well...whatever part is left that they've yet to shoot themselves in. Unless of course they integrate certain addons into the base game. They've already done it with a couple (multi-crafting) so it's not beyond their capabilities.

Just to put some of these rumors to bed:

    1. We are not banning addons in the next patch.

What about after the next patch?

It may have been better to say "We have and will never plan to ban addons or remove addon support from the game." But since the above answer only leads to more questions... what is the final answer?

I doubt this happens although I think it’s necessary if they ever think about cross over between platforms. It is a major advantage over console.

Because you never say never to anything. If someone creates an addon that they believe is clearly cheating somehow, they will ban it. You will not know when that may happen.

I would imagine first and foremost because the rumor was that they were going to be banned in the next patch so the rep shot down the rumor, simply and clearly.
The fact that people are trying to make this some conspiracy now is honestly rather embarrassing. Nothing is an absolute in gaming, as another poster said.
Three years from now if for some reason addons were changed or banned you can count on the fact that at least one person would have this exact statement saved to copy and paste if the person had said "We are not banning add ons".
Stop looking for drama when there is no drama to be found.

That happens sometimes when they are reviewing a thread that's gotten heated to allow moderator work on it, or I guess in this case to put in an official response.

Probably the former in this case as when I posted last night / early this morning there was a lot of bashing regarding PC versus console which is just wrong and so senseless. 😔

I played console in beta and for a year after. But why play on the inferior platform when you do not have to and that has nothing to do with add ons. PC is a better experience overall. Better looking, better controls.

It is not their place to answer something like that in the definitive nor would anybody from any mmo ever answer any question like that in the definitive. You never know what is years down the line.
    Just stop.

I had the same question when I read the post by @ZOS_GinaBruno. Gina, could you please confirm whether this so called "ban" will be implemented in Update 25? I can already see that most, if not all, addon developers will have one heck of a time reworking their addons in the patching overhaul with the new re-download of the game client, but is it ZOS' intention to make it impossible for those developers to rework the addons so that the players can still use them?
    theyancey wrote: »
    Ashtaris wrote: »
Like I posted on another thread, if ZOS completely removed add-ons without providing considerable UI improvements to replace those add-ons, the mass exodus of people leaving from the PC side would probably kill the game and a bunch of people at ZOS would be looking for new jobs. I don’t see it happening.

I agree. Because of advancing age, poor eyesight, hand-eye coordination issues, and such the game would no longer be playable for me without add-ons. The frustration would just not be wort it.

I do not see that happening ether. There will certainly be a period of disruption as most add-ons will need to be rewritten for the new API but that happens with just about every update too. I can weather that storm. However, just in case ZOS has been taken over by Sheogorath I have taken my Plus account off auto renew. We shall see.

I agree with some of the replies on this post and am thinking twice about leaving auto-renew on for my Plus subscription. The yearly renewal for hubby and myself is coming up on January 10 and we are still on the bench as to whether we should sink close to another $300 into the game if addons will be removed in Update 25. I do daily writs on 14 characters and without such addons as Dolgubun Lazy Writ, Daily Alchemy, and Daily Provisioning, writs would take even longer to complete. Also, as you stated @theyancey, my eyesight is not as good as it was years ago and I rely on certain addons to help with being able to read simple chat.

I was under the impression there wont be crossplay? And crossplay would mean even more pressure on the mega server architecture in terms of performance no?

The bigger question is maybe - assuming performance will be fixed - if getting ridd of add ons would be worth it if we get crossplay in return...and i do personally think yes...

Crossplay - being able to play with everybody would be fantastic and zos has shown a willingness to incorporate more tools or updates to improve quality of life (Which they certainly should do more of especially for console, like sorting and searching for things etc.)

No it wouldn't because their default ui is horrendous.

They've said numerous times including this year they're not planning crossplay for ESO.

They also said no new class about 2 or 3 month before warden reveal and no they certainly didnt create the warden from scratch in this time
Last year in a eso live in february/march they said they were working on that version of the necro for about a year so we can guess its the same for the warden

All that to say they did sometime said it wont happen up to the reveal of someting

I don't ever recall them stating there would be no new class. Do you have proof of this? And crossplay will NEVER be a thing. PC has vast advantages over consoles and that would be one of the most imbalanced changes they could ever put in the game. It would become an US vs. THEM thing..... please use your brain.

I would not quite put it so ... jagged.
FFXIV is cross play and it plays amazingly well for all involved, so it is not quite as far fetched as stated. Not to mention controllers can be rather effective in pvp.
