Should More Weapons Be Added To The Game?

For all of the expansions on ESO's content as a whole, the weapons haven't changed at all. In my own opinion, I think spears are a good example of a weapon that could expand gameplay. Giving you higher pierce, at the cost of lower raw damage in it's abilities, compared to other weapons. Of course a gap closer similar to Focused Charge would be expected, but there is a lot of potential in what they could do. Even just adding in new weapons in two handed, and one handed variation could be cool. Perhaps crossbows could make an entrance as well. ESO is built on the grounds of being this massive world where you can be, and do whatever you want, so I see no reason to not add more weapons. If new skill lines, and classes as a whole can be added, surely weapons aren't out of the realm of possibility.

I would love for there to be more choice of weapons, especially for magicka users. I would hate to have to go out and collect new motif pages for all the styles I have already finished.

    Magicka needs another weapon.
Looking for any guildies I used to play with:
    Havoc Warhammer - Alair
LoC EQ2 - Mayi and Iskiab
PRX and Tabula Rasa - Rift - Iskiab
Or anyone else I used to play games with in guilds I’ve forgotten

There is much more to adding a weapon that just aesthetics. That's just the start. There are what, 70 motif styles currently? They would need to design 70+ styles right away. They also have to add new animations. They will have to add this new weapon to the loot tables, diluting the already dilute pool of potential drops.

Personally, I don't see the point. There are already at least a few weapons that are currently not viable anyway. If they can't find a use for maces, mauls, swords and ice staves, I'd say they should work on making the current weapons viable before adding more.

I could see adding new weapon skills for the existing weapons or maybe new weapon lines that incorporate the current pool of weapons, but adding new weapons is just too much effort for the returns from a development point of view.

I'm always in favor of adding more skill lines. In fact, that would be my preferred way to go instead of adding new classes you have to start all over to use.

No, solely because right now the only thing the entire ZOS team should be focused on is fixing the horrible performance and bugs, period. Nothing they can possibly add will out shine the horrendous issues. They need to fix those first before thinking of any more new stuff to add.

But I would say that, would I not: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/371862/additional-weapon-skill-ideas-mk-ii/p1 ;)
There is much more to adding a weapon that just aesthetics. That's just the start. There are what, 70 motif styles currently? They would need to design 70+ styles right away.
    True, though misleading.
A great many "new options" could be done without much effort.
One-handed and Magic; Twin Magic; Warding Staff; Magical Martial Arts or Brawling - nothing new there style-wise.

Polearm? Not too difficult to make, take the staff, change the tip to a longer haft and pointy end. Several styles could borrow the pointy bit from sword or axe designs too.

There might be some completely new ones, sure... crossbows, perhaps flails, offhand throwing javelin back quiver like the guys in cyrodil and orsinium have, or the "spell focus" idea I adore soooo much... but that could be fun to add!

Motiv-wise they could simply add them to underused style pages. You know how for example "Sword" or "Axe" gives you both 1H and 2H designs, yet "Staff" or "Bow" only one visual? Well, add polearm to the staff page and crossbow to the bow page!

I would also love to see them add a "spell focus" visual as reward for completing a whole style. As in, has no seperate motiv page, you gotta catch em all before those visuals unlock.
They also have to add new animations.
    Depends.
Polearms for example could grab quite a few animations from the templar "Aedric Spear" line. Several others could also use a lot of anims that are already in the game...

But yeah, there definitely would have to be -some- new ones. Much like if they want to have a enemy mob with some completely new attack, like has happened many times in the history of ESO DLCs and Expansions, huh? ;)
They will have to add this new weapon to the loot tables, diluting the already dilute pool of potential drops.
And that one is a very, very valid consideration.

Easy enough to solve though - forget about "Bind on Pickup", make it ALL "Bind on Equip" and let the trading do the rest for most stuff... and switch to a token system for the stuff you -really- don't want traded if neccessary.
I mean, its already a huge pain in the as.... posterior to get the weapon you want for your character from dungeon runs. So why not just let people relax a little and -trade- instead of having to do dozends of runs in the hope to get lucky? TZhey still will have to play more then enough to afford the price, won't they?
    x48rph wrote: »

    Wrong.
That was is the death of the game.

I mean, sure, not fixing these issues will also kill the game, but bugfixes don't make me spend money on a DLC. Content would. And they DO need to pay that ZOS team, so... they need to do the new content that gains them the profit they need to keep going to pay the bugstompers to get the bugs fixed along the way.
    x48rph wrote: »

    Wrong again.
What shines most brightly depends on where you look.
Some look only at the PvP, or trials, or whatnot... and whine all day long about horrible lag and insane bugs.
And others look at the landscape, or the basic questing, or the crafting, or the -true- endgame... Elder Fashion Online! And barely notice the bugs that make you go insane!

In any case, the right qurstion is -still- what people would pay for.
How many people would pay a expansion sized chunk of money without getting anything new, only bugfixes?
    Not many I wager!
But many people would pay an expansion sized chunk of money for shiny new stuff to play through, as or with!
And so that is what they need to keep doing, to make enough money to keep the bughunters salary paid as well.
Not that difficult to understand, right?

And while those people are playing, plenty of others will quit playing and/or at least end their subscriptions, buying nothing so any money gain will be offset by the money lost. Also , new players, will be turned off by the continual bad reviews, comments, posts , ect that are made on social media and various other places about the horrendous performance. I've personally told more than one person already who was thinking of getting ESO not to bother cause you get horrible performance and massive uncalled for changes every three months which completely ruins your builds that you worked so hard for.

But hey, if people think dumping more new shiny things into the game will make it better, who am I to argue, just remember though, it's really hard to use those new shiny things if your game is crashing , lagging, blue screening you, not even letting you log in, ect..

Runes, Talismans and Wands for Casters do not need to match Motif to the Armor. Of course, these same weapons could have their own Motifs. These would be Purely Cosmetic so no new weapon skill lines would be needed, but could be cool if they were.

Spears would probably need a matching motif, although who would spend time and effort on a weapon that is, well, thrown away. Shurikens and Throwing Daggers and Darts could fall into this category. Have to figure the mechanics on those, as in do you loot the corpse to get your weapons back, or do you just have an infinite supply like we have with Arrows.

Staffs as a Melee like a Quarter Staff would need matching Motifs, but those are almost the same as the existing Staff Motifs. But, a whole new group of animations needed.

Then there is Hand to Hand. Would not really need matching Motifs either for the Brass Knuckles and Sestas and the like. Again, new Animations and of course a Skill Line.

Crossbows. Let's just say no there. (Reload Time)

Not sure what other weapons we could have, as thrown explosives would just conjure up requests for guns and we already have other games for gunplay.

Two of my character designs would greatly benefit from a melee weapon that allows heavy attacks to regain magicka. Several others I haven't made yet would greatly benefit from this as well. The whole "heavy attacks restore a resource related to your weapon type" thing is honestly kind of silly just in general. If they would just get rid of that or adjust it somehow, then I wouldn't really care about them adding new weapon types.

A melee option for magicka and another ranged option for stamina (crossbow is a good idea)

Oh and frost staff can go back to being a dps weapon, it was a dumb idea to begin with.
    Flame -> single target
    Shock -> AOE
Frost -> critical damage or something

Like said, at least three of those can be borrowed from the aedric spear line. That's half the skill line right there! So... not that many to do, right? Especially if they add some "generic stance" buff abilitiy like for 2H...
    Nestor wrote: »

Yeah. Animations and skills only, be it basic brawling or magically charged hand-to-hand. I suspect there are many, many animations of the kind flying around in every corner, considering just how many fighting games have been coded since fighting games went beyond 2D sprites...
    Nestor wrote: »

But... but... but... they would be really, really nifty to have! I miss them so much from back in the early days, and even in Skyrim we got one... I want that in ESO too!

And really, archers need some varietee too, don't they? I mean, warriors get to pick between sword, axe and mace, mages have many flavors of staff to choose from... but poor arrow girls and boys? Only "pick up your bow and form ranks, soldier!"...

And I totally would deal with a reload time after each shot if I could have a crossbow for my bounty huntress character, it would soooooo much better fit her "theme"...
    Nestor wrote: »

Well, also magic is the "guns" in ESO. Think of the staff as your rifle, and of any theoretical wand/runestone as your pistol... no other firearms needed when you can fireball, right?

But thrown explosives totally should be a thing - as alchemy potions! Add a third solvent kind (alcoholic maybe?), and let people make consumable alchemical bombs! Acid bombs! Poison bombs! Firebombs! Stun bombs! Smoke bombs! Flash bombs! Sticky slime bombs! Nude bombs... no, wait, that was a different movie... :p;)

I said no because there are already weapons in the game that are near useless. Maces, for starters. Yes, yes, I've heard they have some potential use in PVP for penetration. But even there, the 2H sword or axe is preferred.

Frost staves are another. Again, I know they have a niche use for tanking. Odd, as their more well-known use is for infuriating tanks. Their intended use, doing damage in the hands of a magicka DPS, does not truly exist.

I would prefer ESO to fix weapons like these first before introducing more weapons.

Well, some rebalancings (make maces great again?) might be needed. Frost staves on the other hand could quite nicely be fixed by giving them back to DPS, and letting the tanky staffyness rest in an entirely new line of staves...

As for right now the answer for everyone should be a resounding no as Zos is challenged managing and balancing combat in this game. If they demonstrate they can manage the game then a weapon line could be considered.

ofc, the first weapon line that should be considered will be magicka based. Magicka only has one weapon line designed with damage in mind while stamina has 3 weapon lines.

Ah, but magica ALSO has all those class skills, while stamina... are way more dependent on weapons.

Not that I'd disagree on principle that magica really could use a load of added varietee... but I still say, -ranged- stamina characters have even way less choice then magica characters. And I for one would love to see a bucketload of additional choices for -everyone- no matter what way they like to play! No surprise I guess considering the thread I always link to, huh? :p

I think you're too hung up on realism lol. Eso already has infinite thrown daggers and infinite arrows. We also already have a crossbow with no reload time in the fighter's guild skill line. Adding these things as weapon skill lines is hardly a stretch of the imagination.

Not true a one handed skill line (like they orgiionally planned to put in) would not need any new motiffs animations can be easily modified from exsisting ones and a offhand like a rune would not need a look or can be very simple.

Magicka need more than staff and a one handed magic/stamina skill line would do wonders.

One thing I don't understand, is why people think spears would have their own skill line, rather than being just considered another 1hand, or 2handed weapon? Besides that though, I'd love to see spears be able to be wielded as either 1 handed or 2 handed while still having a shield equipped, allowing you to use a mix of 1 handed & 2 handed abilities on your bar.
