What Gap? Skill plays a miniscule role in your performance these days. The biggest factor by far is the gear - well at least in PvP. And PvE is nothing but routine piece of work - know your rotation and practice it to perfection. Want to be as good as those top players then spent some hours on the target dummy like they did when they started. No real skill required.
And how can you stuggle in normal mode? Many of normal mode dungeons don't even require a real tank and/or healer. Most people I see fail don't pay attention to mechanics and think by just pressing 2 buttons they should win. But that is not a skill or experience issue. That's a no-***-given issue. Red AoE circle spawning underneath me ... who cares ...
And no I am not an elitist player. I spend my days decorating my house and practicing playing sorcerer with a friend. I haven't run any of the new dungeons in vet mode. And normal mode only once each. And without any preperation those dungeons were still easy going.

When i started the game, top player were at 25k dps, bad player were at around 10k.
Now top player are at around 80k dps [realistic(?)], bad player are at around ... 10k.
A mate said lately... to change this,...LA needs to be like 500 damage all time. Independent of gear and stats, 500 it is (number is just an example, can be 400 or 900 or whatever, as well).
The smaller the number, the more it closes the gap, (and the more it will annoy some people lol).
Might close the gap, but is another nerf again, so maybe a bad idea and a good idea at once. Not sure yet.

Yeah, it's less fun when your crutch has been taken away but in general its healthier.

I think what you mean is that you're currently enjoying your own crutch.
