I for one am ready for this. As someone who has been playing this game since 2014, only downloading a fresh copy when I got my new gaming laptop a couple years back, look forward to ZOS getting the useless files out of the game. Hopefully this will help with a lot of the issues we are having and help with the loading and playing of the game. And downtime is not an issue as we have suffered many hours (and I do mean many hours) of downtime in the past whether it be server crashes, chapter updates, maintenance, etc.....another downtime for the sake of a better playable game is no big deal imho.

OP realize they are removing unused assets in the code that has never been taken out, just abandoned. This is why they are saying it is best to uninstall and then install the new download. If it's done as a patch it is possible that it would not do it correctly.

This said, it would be good if they allow to have the new download done prior in the background the proceeding week. They could have it password locked, then on the day of install switch give us password to unlock. If anything was changed from the install of the actual server, then a update could be pushed to send out the changes to the pre-install. At least the bulk of the info would have already been done. This probably would entail a longer down time if they needed to push an update.

Source on the recommendation to uninstall and re-download? I'd assume the patcher would check every folder and purge what is no longer needed, or even start with a full wipe.

The reason why they wouldn't (at least automatically) pre-download the new version of the game in the background is the sheer size of having 2 versions of the game, albeit if one is smaller than the other. For something that is going to be a one time thing, it is probably not worth the effort to over complicate it anyway.

That would be Gina Bruno during the ESO Live where the two devs where going over the update 24 changes. Well you know what they say about assume, especially were ZOS is involved.

I saw that, I am pretty sure they said the download is huge, it will redownload the entire game, but it is only going to happen once. What they did not say was the user has the manually uninstall the game, then go through the process of reinstalling the game through the new patch process. I find it highly unlikely ZOS is going to expect the user to manually tinker with an automated patch process given the bulk of users do not watch streams, check patch notes, or visit forums. What is likely, is that if the patcher is going to leave behind trash files, is the patcher will either clean them up at the end, or start the process with a full wipe and a redownload, but the process will be automated without user involvement required.

Saying that, perhaps I missed it and ZOS really does expect every PC user to uninstall first, in which case, if you have that video and time stamp, that'd be great. Otherwise, I see no reason why ZOS would expect the user to manually uninstall and reinstall when even that could be automated via the patcher.

Where does OP get the idea that U25 will essentially be a complete reinstall of the game?

Yes, I expect it will be larger than normal but I have not seen anything mentioned to the degree OP is suggesting. If this is coming from other players it is just rumor. It is common that player say things to start rumors and other players speculate without any real information to go on and the results are great exaggeration and inherently false claims. Every once in awhile someone gets lucky.

In a stream the devs said duplicate and redundant assets are being culled from the game. Additionally the file structure is being changed which will make future patches easier and smaller. The end result they claim will be smaller client size, faster patching, faster load times, and a fix to assets failing to load in (consoles).

Given the entire structure of the game is being altered, it will have to be redownloaded.

I typically have to re-install the game every time there is a big patch, because the automatic patching always bugs out for me and it doesn't work without a repair/reinstall. So it won't make that much difference for me, just adding the launcher into that.

And if it will refresh everything, getting rid of old files, it's worth it.

I do hope it isn't going to mess with my addons though.

Thank you. Simple and to the point. Well, part of that SS. I had not see the re-download part.

Wow, that will be a long dl then. But well worth it in the long run if Zos is doing it right. Seems like stuff that should have been done long ago.

Even though it's a one time thing, it may be unfortunate for those of us with low bandwidth, to not join in on the fun within some hours like most of the players.

When I reinstalled ESO a month ago, it took me 9 days to download and install the game. I can't get faster bandwidth at my location, and it was downloading 24/7.

So as other games allow, please ZOS, consider the option to pre-download the "update" somehow.

Yeah. I don't have unlimited bw. Far from it. I have 20 gb prime time for a month. And 50 gb free that I can use from 2 am - 8 am MST. Well, gee. I can't count on satellite (yeah, I've had satband for 20 years now....) actually WORKING - so I can't just assume I can set it to download at 2 am, and find out it's done downloading at 8 am. And staying up to babysit a huge download at my age.... well.... it's not something I really want to do. Oh.... and this is likely happening in January, so on top of everything else, there's the weather. Snowstorms. I don't have connection when it snows....

Seriously, ZOS. Could you just give us "not unlimited bw, not young folks" a bone? How about you provide the download on a cd. I'll pay you a hundred US for it. Nope, not kidding. It's worth that much to me. If I can't get it on a cd.... I might not be playing it at all. Ever again.

Most of you have NO IDEA how difficult 60-70 gigs is for some people - like me. Even half that. If I have to pay for extra gigs... it's a LOT of money. Like.... 10 bucks for 100 mb....

Obviously this is for PC/Mac only. You could pre arrange with one of your guild mates to copy the game files to a USB/SDD and Express ship it to you. Go out and buy a large enough medium and post it to them in advance. Then you'll just have to start the downloading process it, pause it, copy the game files over and then relaunch the launcher. That's what I currently do now when moving the game from 1 pc to the next since I'm pretty good at blowing computers up....

I looking forward to this patch, furthermore, the screenshot above is only client update info, the rest is:

    Q1 2020: Update 25

    Patching overhaul
Work is ongoing and on track with internal bug fixing and asset clean-up as the focus.

    Faster loading fixtures and characters
Work is ongoing and on track – no new major updates at this time.

Behind-the-scenes combat ability improvements phase 2
Work is ongoing and on track – no new major updates at this time.

    Frame rate improvements part 1
Effects manager work is in progress and on track.
We have identified some multi-threading work that is needed, and that is now in progress. This work will allow more game systems (specifically the fixture update process and renderer for this round) to utilize multiple cores, improving overall performance on the game client.

I like everything that I see, both the Patching overhaul and the even more additional optimization.

It's pretty funny that the current "newer" dev team that is making huge pushes to improve the game from the base level so the future of ESO is even possible gets the most flack. The entire team that designed the game before launch and post for 1-4 years are to blame for the instability of the game. I understand some of it, but not all of the flack.

I fully support the new dev team even if I'm barely playing recently and I'll happily redownload the full client if it means a better future. Couldn't say the same for when Wrobel was around...

This is really good news as this game takes up 104 GB on my PC which is ridiculous considering that is 45% of my used space. I think when i started it was like 65 gigs or something. Id love for them to get it down to about 50 GB but anything would be an improvement.

I am right there with you brother... I live in an area where the best I have is Cellphone Downloads... 15GBs at highspeed. ESO just went offline for this massive update and I STILL cannot find out how big it'll end up being to get back online. I would love to pay for a blu-ray full of the game. But I guess they really only care about people with super highspeed limited internet!
Heroes are no braver than anyone else.
They are just braver for five minutes longer!

It is a one time thing, I'm sure you'll manage.
