OP realize they are removing unused assets in the code that has never been taken out, just abandoned. This is why they are saying it is best to uninstall and then install the new download. If it's done as a patch it is possible that it would not do it correctly.
This said, it would be good if they allow to have the new download done prior in the background the proceeding week. They could have it password locked, then on the day of install switch give us password to unlock. If anything was changed from the install of the actual server, then a update could be pushed to send out the changes to the pre-install. At least the bulk of the info would have already been done. This probably would entail a longer down time if they needed to push an update.
Source on the recommendation to uninstall and re-download? I'd assume the patcher would check every folder and purge what is no longer needed, or even start with a full wipe.
The reason why they wouldn't (at least automatically) pre-download the new version of the game in the background is the sheer size of having 2 versions of the game, albeit if one is smaller than the other. For something that is going to be a one time thing, it is probably not worth the effort to over complicate it anyway.

That would be Gina Bruno during the ESO Live where the two devs where going over the update 24 changes. Well you know what they say about assume, especially were ZOS is involved.

sound like a YEAR 2020 "worlds going to end" crash. Stock up on water, food and batteries!
Where does OP get the idea that U25 will essentially be a complete reinstall of the game?
Yes, I expect it will be larger than normal but I have not seen anything mentioned to the degree OP is suggesting. If this is coming from other players it is just rumor. It is common that player say things to start rumors and other players speculate without any real information to go on and the results are great exaggeration and inherently false claims. Every once in awhile someone gets lucky.

that's a huge if
and given the track record...

I do hope it isn't going to mess with my addons though.

It is a one time thing, I'm sure you'll manage.
Sandnessen wrote: »It is a one time thing, I'm sure you'll manage.
Even though it's a one time thing, it may be unfortunate for those of us with low bandwidth, to not join in on the fun within some hours like most of the players.
When I reinstalled ESO a month ago, it took me 9 days to download and install the game. I can't get faster bandwidth at my location, and it was downloading 24/7.
So as other games allow, please ZOS, consider the option to pre-download the "update" somehow.
Edit: topy

Yeah. I don't have unlimited bw. Far from it. I have 20 gb prime time for a month. And 50 gb free that I can use from 2 am - 8 am MST. Well, gee. I can't count on satellite (yeah, I've had satband for 20 years now....) actually WORKING - so I can't just assume I can set it to download at 2 am, and find out it's done downloading at 8 am. And staying up to babysit a huge download at my age.... well.... it's not something I really want to do. Oh.... and this is likely happening in January, so on top of everything else, there's the weather. Snowstorms. I don't have connection when it snows....
Seriously, ZOS. Could you just give us "not unlimited bw, not young folks" a bone? How about you provide the download on a cd. I'll pay you a hundred US for it. Nope, not kidding. It's worth that much to me. If I can't get it on a cd.... I might not be playing it at all. Ever again.
Most of you have NO IDEA how difficult 60-70 gigs is for some people - like me. Even half that. If I have to pay for extra gigs... it's a LOT of money. Like.... 10 bucks for 100 mb....

Q1 2020: Update 25
Patching overhaul
Work is ongoing and on track with internal bug fixing and asset clean-up as the focus.
Faster loading fixtures and characters
Work is ongoing and on track – no new major updates at this time.
Behind-the-scenes combat ability improvements phase 2
Work is ongoing and on track – no new major updates at this time.
Frame rate improvements part 1
Effects manager work is in progress and on track.
We have identified some multi-threading work that is needed, and that is now in progress. This work will allow more game systems (specifically the fixture update process and renderer for this round) to utilize multiple cores, improving overall performance on the game client.
I like everything that I see, both the Patching overhaul and the even more additional optimization.

Yeah. I don't have unlimited bw. Far from it. I have 20 gb prime time for a month, which costs me $75 US. And 50 gb free that I can use from 2 am - 8 am MST. Well, gee. I can't count on satellite (yeah, I've had satband for 20 years now.... so I KNOW it's not solidly reliable) actually WORKING - so I can't just assume I can set it to download at 2 am, and find out it's done downloading at 8 am. Obviously this is for PC/Mac only. You could pre arrange with one of your guild mates to copy the game files to a USB/SDD and Express ship it to you. Go out and buy a large enough medium and post it to them in advance. Then you'll just have to start the downloading process it, pause it, copy the game files over and then relaunch the launcher. That's what I currently do now when moving the game from 1 pc to the next since I'm pretty good at blowing computers up....

I don't do guilds. I do have an RL friend who might be willing to provide a stick with the whole magilla. Of course, that assumes he's still playing and so on - not a given, since he's.... um.... not very happy with pvp right now, which is what he does - period. Yes, I play on PC - but the major issue is that I shouldn't have to depend on friends to save my bacon. Not everyone in the US (yeah, I live in the desert SW, 40 miles one way from REAL broadband) has the option to download even 30 gb of stuff....
Seriously. I meant what I said. I would happily pay ZOS a hundred US for a cd with the whole reinstall game on it. Sure, there would be an update to that - but THAT is manageable. The whole game again.... is NOT manageable for me.
I love the game.... but.... I'm not going to renew the ESO+ that happens in January, or the second account in April, because I'm not probably going to be able to play - since I'm not going to be able to download the whole game again (I didn't download it originally - the friend sent me his install folder.... but not sure that's going to be a viable alternative this time for reasons - since his only interest is pvp - and he's seriously pissed right now, to the point he might not be playing any more).
Looks like back to serious Skyrim for me.... Not that I haven't been playing Skyrim (and Oblivion) all along anyway....
