There are several openly homosexual NPC characters in eso, and in past Elder Scrolls games. It’s a non-event.

I beg your pardon? How does being gay ( / female / Norwegian / 53 years old / ... ) or not have any relevance in this game?
You're either a decent person or you're not.

Oh, if you're on about those kids who use "gay" as an insult: It's a TOS violation and can be reported. Simple as that.

ESO is definitely the best of the series in that regard. Skyrim let the player character get married to whoever they like, but IIRC, the only homosexual NPCs were the dead couple on Solstheim.

    Well... some do, some don't.
Some react with a "so what", which is always heartwarming to see... and some go with down-putting remarks instead, but that's just humans being humans, at least the game itself has a wide range of depicting any sort of loving relationship as "normal", no matter what partners, and the ToS do speak out harshly against any sort of nasty remarks, so if someone really decides to be such an a-hole... you can always report and mute and feel that ZOS will not look kindly upon any sort of discrimination.

As for in-game... well, someone once put it nicely like this:

Every 2nd NPC in ESO is gay, I think Zenimax is just trying to explain why the population is so low. Only 40 NPC's per zone, and half are gay.

Many male characters wear dresses in ESO. So i don´t think people are afraid.

My old orc granny with eyepatch is pretty fat, but you cannot create fat looking characters. That is one of the concerns too.

There is no abrahamic diety in ESO. There is little to no reason why being any type of sexuality would be frowned upon. I suppose some particularly masculine races (Nord) would be a little offput about it, but even then it's more a petty insult than an actual prejudice.

From my experience no one cares. Once in awhile people use slurs in zone chat but nothing is sacred in zone chat. 90% of the time people in zone using such language are intentionally being trollish to get a rise out of someone.

    The real issue is why?

Playing for years and never understood why what people are into has to be promoted on a video game of all places.

When being validated has to do with the attention you get from others, the real issue is a personal one.

Search the forums and see how rare it is that people "come out," announcing they're a Eskimos, married, politicians, gymnasts, Asians, Africans, etc..

There's 1 group that does it all the time. No other group labels themselves as afraid if they don't project their status in the eyes of everyone in the world.

    Let that sink in.

one of the things i like about ESO is how common and unimportant sexual orientation is in most cases. no one bats an eye if you're straight or gay, no one gets beaten up or killed or fired or evicted from their house because of it. <3 i hope we'll be like that someday, but with less actual rascism between the everyone lol.

Oh, that's just not even remotely true. I see people mention all kinds of personal facts about themselves all the time on the forum: whether they are married or have a boyfriend/girlfriend, what they do for a living, what pets they have, what country they live in, what their non-gaming hobbies are, etc. People should be comfortable mentioning as much or as little about themselves as they like, as long it's pursuant to the forum rules, and orientation is no exception to that.

OP asked a perfectly reasonable question, as online harassment is sadly still a thing, particularly for members of historically oppressed groups. That being said, I will agree with other posts above and note that *for the most part* ESO is a friendly place and I have seen relatively little harassment compared to other games I have played over the last 15 years or so. But OP, it ultimately all comes down to your personal comfortable level. Just know that there are people out there who will have your back if you are harassed.

This is one of those non-arguments that sounds plausible until you actually take a step back and examine it - the reality is that there are no characters at all in ESO that pronounce on their sexuality, they simply refer to their partners as husbands or wives in the course of a conversation in the same way as the hetero characters do. The only people who feel that ESO are making a point or banging a drum tend to be those who find such causal assumptions of open sexuality to be in some way jarring because of their own mindset.

They are not making a point it is simply that in a world that contains people of various sexualities a widely travelled adventurer will encounter all those varieties...

You're wrong. Most groups have no issue mentioning anything about themselves if the topic comes up. That's missing the point.

However they do not consider themselves afriad for not coming out. They don't project any need for such attention.

There are groups, african, natives, etc. that have faced far and away greater oppression than that yet they dont have coming out events. That is a culture particular to one group.

Taking a wild guess there is a quite obvious legitimate reasons for that - 'coming out' is something that tends to be done to people that the person already knows and has pre-existing relationships with - whereas it is pretty unlikely that you are going to reach the age of 18 or 20 or whatever without your family realising you are the same race as they are or your peer group taking a wild guess at your skin tone it is quite possible that someone's family and close friends may not know that they are 'gay'. Therefore the coming out process might well lead to the loss of what were previously fine family or friend relationships in a way that simply being one of those groups will not.

So the oppression level may be less but the cost in losing previously good relations with friends or family could be much higher (although their are still nations where it is punishable by death and others where acceptance might be on the surface only)

99% of NPCs have no established sexuality, one way or another. Those that do have one, it's often implied rather than stated (e.g. mentioning their partner matter of factly). Your post strongly suggests you are bothered by the minority of cases where a gay/non straight sexuality is attributed to NPCs. I'd worry more about why that is than what cartoon characters are portrayed to be.

Same-sex relations aren't taboo in Tamriel.

The player population isn't nearly as tolerant though. Just have a look at zone chat whenever someone advertises an LGBT guild.

Gaming communities tend to be very conservative because they primarily consist of sexually repressed and highly insecure young males. The *** storm following CDPR's recent decision to replace the word "gender" with "body type" in Cyberpunk offers a perfect example of this.
