    1 get endgame character

    2 Respec

3 gain experience of actually tanking

No point in trying to level conventionally as ZOS don’t reward tanking or healing with experience

Level as a dps, swap to tank gear and spec once I'm fully leveled including any skill lines that are easier to get as a non tank.

As a tank in Random Normal Dungeons.

Quick queue, extra exp, and I get to actually be useful as a tank.

Truth is, if I want to level a DD quickly, I craft a set of 1H&S and run them as a true tank through random normals.

Go training S&B front bar and pack it with class skills, preferably AoEs and a spammable. You'll want to level those class skill trees asap. Back bar destro staff with Ele Blockade and utility skills.

I must have to do things the hard way.

My first tank was a stamina DD until CP 300. She seemed OK in overland. I soloed every WB in the EP by level 47. This was prior to 1T. When 1T dropped, I could not solo WBs anymore. Still OK for the rest of what I was doing. Then I got a target dummy. She was not a DD. So I learned to tank on a Templar. Good times

My next tank was a tank from level 10. I was able to learn the skills that I would end up using. She already had CP behind her and is a DK. I still wish that had been my initial experience in tanking.

All subsequent tanks have found mapped locations to get to level 10. After a quick jaunt into Cyrodiil, they begin their training in the harshest of environments, FG1.

Full stamina DD, but keeping one s&b skill on both bar, so the s&b skill line levels up too.

The answers seem to make this out as something very complicated and as such I did not find an appropriate answer.

I level up my tanks as damage dealers and have a back bar setup for turning in quests. I do the same with my healers and even damage dealers as every character I have can play more than one role.

I have always leveled up tanks in any game as a damage dealer when it is permitted to change specs. It just makes sense. I have also commonly changed specs from tank to damage dealer when doing solo quests for any length of time. I find it odd someone would not have a damage spec but I suppose some want to do things the hard way.

My first tank I went around piercing armor every little bandit and scamp. I learned quickly to just do what I want until it’s time to join team environments and then respec to whatever the team wants at that time. My tanks all share one set of “approved” gear so I don’t have to hear trash talk from nobody. My old retired saptank on the other hand... he was the light of my life and the inspiration for me to theorycraft and hone my skills, until Zos put two in the chest and one in the head with consecutive game “updates”..

I use one bar. I have a mix of armor weights with training trait for every 10 levels. I get a kill with S&B to get skill line. I rotate in destruction staff and S&B skills to level them. By the time I am level 50, I’m nearly done with both skills and armor.

Doing leveling on a dps setup, but on a setup that can also do daily dungeons (if wants to) as a tank with a taunt and also battlegrounds that are a fun way of leveling for me.

Usually having front bar dps and then back is buff and stuff i level up when returning quests or try to be on it when bgs about to end or when dungeon skill point giving quest is about to complete and so on.

When go get skill points from Public dungeon group event bosses i usually add couple skills from other weapon lines to front bar just so they level up fast while i am grinding through them. So when max level i got pretty much all skill/weapon lines at max what i will be using and what i might use so i usually max out Resto lines and so on even if plan to use SnB/Destro.

Level character as a magicka DD. I don't really bother with leveling the skill lines until I hit 50, so I hit 50 destro before I hit 50 S&B.

I leveled an Imperial DK with 64 attribute points in magicka. I even healed my first visit to a particular DLC dungeon on him. I power leveled skills and skill lines via crafting writs, well before the recent price increase that suggests other folks figured out that trick.

That said, so far I've only tanked on him for practice, duoing with my wife. I don't think we did anything much harder than Volenfell. But hey -- if I can duo Volenfell, I can probably 4-man any non-DLC dungeon pretty straightforwardly ... :)

I only have one tank and leveled the character as a pure tank right from Level 1 with no regrets. I was in no hurry and wanted to get fully steeped in thinking like a tank. Each mudcrab takes their own several hits to kill. A WB takes a long time to solo but with little risk. I have characters who can kill pretty quickly if that is what I want during a play session. I can perhaps imagine if I leveled multiple tanks I might want to spec for more dps while doing so but with just the one tank, I've no regrets and glad I leveled the character the way I did.

As a tank but in medium armor/DPS gear
I used 2nd option, with backbar being a different weapon than s&b. Taunt on front, and 4 skill that needs leveling next to it, on back aoes and buffs. The xp came from doing daily random dungeons, applying taunt+everything else a dd does as its madness to go full tank in normals.
It was really effective as now I got 50 on all weapons, classes, armor and most guild abilities too.

Done two tanks now, first was my DK who I took through the alliance and main quest. It was ok if a little slow but I wasn't in any rush.

Second one is my necro and I've kept it in Elsweyr. Dungeons as they became available, some of the early story quests and the dailies so delve, world boss and dragons. Its always nice when you just roll up to a WB and get to work and then watch the waiting damagers join in when they realise you are not going to die. Tanking the dragons is just fun, nothing special to it but they've been animated really well and you do have to take a little care sometimes.
