Would you play a nightblade if there were no cloak "skill"?
Nightblades can't exist in PvP without cloak. Calling cloak a skill is more than a bit misrepresentitve of what it is, but that's what ZOS calls it.

You can also build support, healer types without cloak. There are many options. There are even more options to counter cloak and invisibility potions.5 -

I don't pvp. But I've never used Cloak on either of my Nightblades. (My stamblade has every stealth passive, stealth armor sets, etc. Alas, it's also a Bosmer, so it's stealth bonuses were screwed over by a PvP patch. I have a lot of magblades and the one I take into cyrodiil the most uses Dark Cloak. It is never invisible. I have recently pvped on my G.O. Magblade who currently has Shadowy Disguise that I might use during a fight to proc crit. Any other use is too expensive for its low-regen build. I'm not a ganker or bomber, but I like to try that occasionally and shadowy is crucial for that.Fan of playing magblade since 2015. (PC NA)

Its about high damage and keeping pressure on your opponent in PVP.
Nightblades dont need cloak to do well in PVP, Infact aside from avoiding big groups and tel var farming using other skills are better.
I will say though I choose nightblade because I like having that tool available and overall it's why I choose the class even if I dont actively use the skill.

Vermethys✭✭✭✭I don't know about the rest, but the NBs that give me the most trouble in PvP are usually ones that use the healing morph of cloak (Dark Cloak) -- MagNBs to be more specific. Cloaking NBs are mostly just pesky.PC EU CP1400+

✭✭A lot of the NB builds rely on Cloak and sure you can play without it but if that's what you want to do then you may as well roll a Stamden or a Stamplar who are way more effective at the Brawler playstyle than NB. Nightblade is supposed to be a stealthy class and Cloak compliments that playstyle well but it also has many counters.2 -

Dark cloak is really underrated imo. Minor protection (this is a great buff on its own), major ward and resolve and a nice hot that scales with max health (so heavy armour and shadow skill line passives) - not bad and more reliable than shadowy disguise.2 -

Nightblades Have binary choices. Like Invis or heal (Cloak morph) - Burst or mitigation (Bow stacks)
Nb have severe limitations. Other classes accomplish more but without such sacrifices.4 -

If someone thinks, oh I can hop on a night blade slot cloak and be awesome be for warned. It takes a lot of practice and skill to survive on a NB. There are SO many counters to cloak it is insane most people do not use them.1 -

This is one of those typical threads of someone that got ganked or annoyed. Cloak has more negatives than positives, so yes very much playable without cloak. However removing cloak gets rid of the ''assasin/rogue'' style gameplay for stamblades.
As for magblades they pretty much barely use cloak unless the person really wants to.

Bosov✭✭✭✭✭Could sorc play PvP without a shield? Yes they can. Just like a nightblade can play without their main defense skill. You can make it work but you need to change your build. It wouldnt be fair to take away cloak though.
Sorcs have shields and mobility, dk have healing and tankiness and templar also have healing and tankiness. Nightblades have shade and cloak as main defense.

They're definitely a class. I'm playing a stamnecro at the moment and I've joked that it's just a necroblade but the truth is that the classes are very different and cloaking doesn't have much to do with it.0 -
