    -Because- he was expelled!
Otherwise he would still have been sitting with the rest of the psijics, locked away from the world until the events of ESO:Summerset.
Also, necromancy used to be much less of a big deal "evil" in the old empire then it is all around the rest of tamriel...

...and how would he know if he had not dabbled in it? :p
Technically, any character dabbles in necromancy during the quest to save Abnur Tharn anyhow. And usually finds it distasteful to collect all that rotting meat...

" I'll make a Necromancer of you yet " is what he tells the Vestige during the rescue.

Despite what they felt or thought about him, he was a means to and end and needed him to perform the ritual to make Varen dragon born.

I doubt Lyris and Sai Sahan truly trusted him, they were just loyal followers/soldiers for Varen. Varen was also blinded by power and he probably cared less as who was able to help him.

    Aren't you pedantic ;)

In Skyrim you were the Dragonborn, Saviour of Nirn, Guild Master of the Thieves Guild, Listener of the Dark Brotherhood, Assasin of the Emperor, Legate in the Imperial Legion, follower of the Divines and of every Daedric Prince, a vampire and a vampire hunter, a Thane of every hold, Archmage of the College of Wintehold, Leader of the Companions AND a loving father of adopted orphans and YOU complain about Mannimarco's dual life?

TES games never ask about your past, it seems :D

What's worse is KNOWING that I'm a Master thief, member of the Dark Brotherhood, AND a currently avid user of necromancy in it's purest state - Hell, they helped while I beat Mannimarco with (wait for it).... Necromancy.

They STILL invited me to become a member of the new companions.

    It's like they never learn.

Heh, it'd be cool if the dialogue was altered for necromancer players with Mannimarco making a snide comment about how the player is just a novice and he will show you how it's properly done, before summoning his minions, or something like that.

Does he? His family engages in daedra worship. But I don't recall him ever using necromancy.

He probably means the way they are using necromancy, and not the necromancy itself. Like how a driver can comment about someone else's reckess driving.

Right, but is there some lore that states he's a necromancer? He's listed as a Battle Mage in most of the stuff I've read.

Abnur himself admits to dabbling in necromancy if your character admits to it first.

But yeah, I wouldnt call him a necromancer. Battlemage seems a more correct description.

In any case, IIRC Mannimarco was made a companion after he fooled the others into trusting him with the promise that he'd help Varen Aquilarios claim his right as Tiber Septim's heir.

Tiber Septim is born around 250 years after the events of ESO, actually.

There's a nifty timeline in a few places on the internet. Here is an article with one as a table.

Mannimarco is an expert in Soulmagic. The Amulet of Kings is the most powerful Soulstone existing as it was stated in the main quest. Thats why they needed him. He was the only one who promised Varen that he can make him a Dragonborn otherwise there would be civil war. I think they knew they couldnt trust him but there was not much of a choice

"derrrr, how do I make a flesh colossus Mr. Tharny?"
"don't worry, we'll make a Necromancer of you yet!"

You need to understand something important about tharn. He uses unsavoury means but with good intentions. He resents his own sister for raising an army of necromancers so why would he practice it himself? He is a true imperial and i believe tharn has integrity but just like all heroes he has a weak point. Give him more credit please. I love his wicked sense of humour. 😆

Or if you like it more "ESO background", here is what I once picked out from the timeline:
For further reference (and character background ideas), some of the high point mentioned in ESO stories, so you can put things in relation:

Mages Guild forms - 2E 230 (Vanus Galerion is no spring chicken...)

Syffrim form - 2E 320 (later become "Fighters Guild")

Dark Brotherhood forms - 2E 358 (or rather, splits from Morag Tong)

Orsinium sacked - 2E 431 (Yes, that grudge is 150 years old at the time of ESO!)

Reachmen invade High Rock - 2E 541 (Black Drake)
Daggerfall Covenant forms - 2E 542 (Only breton kings alliance at this time)

Knarhaten Flu - 2E 560 (Kothringi and Lilmothiit become extinct in the following years)

    Ransers War - 2E 566
DC reforms in aftermath - 2E 567 (now with redguards and orcs as well)

    Akaviri Invasion, EP forms - 2E 572

    Varens Rebellion - 2E 576

    Varen becomes emperor - 2E 577

Soulburst - 2E 578 (fall of the Emperor, begin of the interregnum)

Ayrenn crowned, AD forms - 2E 580 (and the three banners war begins in earnest)

    ESO - 2E 582+
(the mainstory is set in 582, Imperial City would fit in there just as well, the "after mainstroy" regions like Craglorn, Orsinium or the guild DLCs in 583, and the "dadric conspiracy" storyline with Vvardenfell and clockwork city might be happening 584 or so as time moves on in tamriel...)

...no major fixed events in lore... (meaning ZOS can practically do whatever) until...

    AD reforms - 2E 830

    Tiber wars begin - 2E 856

    Dargoth Ur awakens - 2E 882

    TES-A:Redguard - 2E 864

Tiber Septim finally conquers all and becomes emperor - 2E 896 (end of the second era)

    ...

    TES-L:Battlespire - 3E 398

    TES:Arena - 3E 399

    TES-2:Daggerfall - 3E 405

    TES-3:Morrowind - 3E 427

    TES-4:Oblivion - 3E 433 (end of the third era)

    TES-5:Skyrim - 4E 201

@Aznarb Vanus Galerion, one of the founders of the Mage Guild started out as a Psijic but left of his own volition.. He and the Psijic Order is no longer on the best of terms because of that.

Thx for the reminder, I've forget this part !
