Are we moving towards the elimination of classes?

With all the abilies being uniformed in terms of damage and cost, and with the obvious imbalance that comes with it due to the classes’ different resources management, is the upcoming changes the first (rubbish) step in that direction?

Well, we'll keep the "labels" indicating our class.

Once you log in, though, you'll pick standard skills, standard spells, standard abilities to play in a uniform way in a streamlined game where the only variable will be how much ping you have.

I think we are moving towards people not feeling limited by their classes but that is not the same as being classless.

I think there are plenty of players that wish there were no classes.

Not sure if pretty much everyone having "999+" makes it a variable  .

Imo the whole "standardization" is just for easier tweaking the numbers later. Now with all those factors, different tick rates, direct this, dot that, changing anything is literal hell.

I think that maybe they are working on a classless system. Something like choose any 3 class skills lines. This is probably wrong, but seems like a direction they could be headed.

I sure wish they would "standardize" Blast Bones.

Maybe then it would actually work.

(I did not realize this was a double thread. This is what I posted in the other one.)

I should be saying of course not, but it does not feel that simple. And I really don't have any confidence in the future of this game.

That being said when I first started playing this game I was surprised that classes were going to be a thing, rather I thought all of the skills would be in trees (like in skyrim for example). So I don't know how I feel about a total elimination of classes. Would I prefer it? In a way, but the current system is not totally bad either. Do I trust the current team to do it right? I do not.

I think the Devs started out with a typical set of MMO classes and have gradually been moving towards a more singleplayer TES philosophy (urged by a vocal segment of the playerbase) where you can play any role on any class.

Once you add in the pressures of horizontal progression which means the Devs have to keep changing the meta...

And you add in two new classes which have to fill in the niches of tank, healer, and DD not quite covered by the other classes...

Class = Role is no longer such a hard line as it used to be.

To be honest, as radically as they nerf every PTS, I would love to have all of the skill lines independent of class. It would make it easier to adapt to meta changes with a respec. Luckily they don't have class change tokens...it would cause me to waste a lot of money.

My MagSorc sure seems like it's losing class identity. Personally, I like the class system and think skills should basically be composed of class and weapon skills. What I don't like is having to run guild, world, and PVP skills to make sure you can compete.

So the Matriarch is busted into double-barred uselessness with a 69% damage nerf while Entropy is buffed to a 25K 12 second DOT + a heal + Major Sorcery?

While I'm not privy to the devs combat vision, from my view, sometimes it's not making a lot of sense.

Nope, but we are moving toward the addition of Spellcrafting to fill any gaps in your class skills. Classes are definitely becoming less important.

I think there's a fine line between "eliminating class" and "any class can be competent in any role", which are both interesting discussions, but some weird outliers make me think they aren't really doing either. Templar got straight up huge healing buffs on PTS, and sorcs got nerfed in healing, so you'd think if they wanted to eliminate class meaning or make all classes equal they would do the opposite of that.

Imo, they need to remove the CP stats and give them back to the classes, but help the classes stand out by leaning in to their specializations that are already present, but too weak to make a big enough difference. Remove the EVERY build has +20% dot/direct/crit dmg and +11% fire/frost/shock/physical/poison/disease, then add them back to the classes.

    Sorc's could do +10% more physical/shock damage, DK's +10% Poison/Fire damage, Warden's + 10% Magicka/Frost damage, NB +10% Direct/Crit Dmg, etc.

I'd like to see Sorc's rewarded to use Lightning Skills and DK's to use Flame skills, DK's also get resource back from their specialized damage types every 2s, so the evidence is already there to make classes unique even when they are choosing abilities outside their class. '

With +3 additional Magicka dots in the game, classes should not be dropping their own abilities to use close to all 3, it should feel like a choice. With more and more abilities becoming viable outside of Class skills, I would hope to see a world where DK's choose Flame Reach and Fire Blockade, Warden would choose Frost Reach, Soul Trap and Ice Blockade, etc.

With the possible introduction of Spell Crafting, this would also give players a reason to choose specific crafted skills over another. If you DON'T give classes bonuses to a specific skill set. EVERYONE would choose the same ability which is why people are scared of Spell Crafting in the current context of the game.

I believe this too, see my above comment, except they need to buff what makes classes unique or else Spell Crafting will become "Make X DOT and X Spammable" because everything else is weaker. If a Sorc does more lightning damage, reward them with the choice to make more lightning spells. Simple fix to an otherwise horrible issue on the horizon if they don't do something about Class Power VS CP Power.

Really we do it without like, the musical instruments. This is the only musical: the mouth. And hopefully the brain attached to the mouth. Right? The brain, more important than the mouth, is the brain. The brain is much more important.

Realistically, yea. We have been for a while but it is much more pronounced now. Certainly, most rotations for mag players post patch will be very similar when they are obviously not now. Most rotations will be 12 seconds because wall and entropy are that and there won't be much downtime on the 10 second soul trap. I expect these 3 abilities will be in all rotations. Whatever class you have will really come down to passives and what few dots / utilities / executes / procs / and passives the class has. They are all going to feel pretty similar in the way stam builds currently feel similar.
I am currently worried for the future of ESO. Population seems like it is in free fall and the cancellation of the North America in-person gathering feels very much like pulling the plug. Kudos on fixing the in-game economy though. Clearly whatever gold shenanigans were happening the last couple years are fixed.
