I just spent a few minutes searching google and youtube for a solid explanation of the benefits of going one way or another or even why a mix is more desirable. If anybody could guide to me to a recent/relevant article or video with clear and concise information, I would be forever grateful.

Are you talking about critdmg modifiers or crit chance raiting?
