Can you mute it?

Well, I suppose they were thinking that everyone wants to talk to everyone all the time. Ugh. There's a reason I don't do consoles - or MS much. I get security updates for win 10. That's it. I don't EVER download the actual OS updates - because they put in stuff to make sure the auto-EVERYTHING updates that I have disabled are no longer viable.
Yeah.... 10 works much faster than 7 - and 7 is not supported for much longer. So - 10 it is. An older version (about end of 2015) for which the only updates I allow are security.... I have a lovely little app that MS itself made available which means I can tell auto-update NOT to download stuff.
Works for me.
What I really want is a linux that has a front-end like windows, and that isn't like DOS 3.0 to use. I gave up command line for a reason.... Thing is, the minute I met win 3.0 (yeah.... that long ago....) it was like "OMG - THIS is how computers are supposed to work!" And win 3.0 was buggier than any anthill.... but it still was MAGNITUDES better than DOS command line....

win 10 allows you to run a linux shell with access to the windows file system. It's still windows, but the linux environment is the real deal. I think that's the opposite of what you're looking for though. I use linux for utility applications and only want shell access, so I actually kind of like the embedded thing ms does.

Yeah, I have a couple good friends who use it that way. But you're right, it's not what I want. I want a native linux OS which looks and acts like win 10,
I truly do not want to return to command line - or to an OS which expects me to log in with admin privs every time I need to copy a folder - and doesn't give me the option to "always allow" admin. Is that more secure? Probably. But I've had a computer since 1984 (late to the party by some metrics, yes) and I've been online since 1993 - I've never had a virus or malware. I know how to prevent that. And I don't appreciate an OS that refuses to let me do with my own machine/OS exactly what I wish.
In fact, I have a very good friend who uses linux - until he wants to play games. And then he boots into windows - because while linux (under WINE) will run the games, as he puts it "the absolute *** (yeah I know that's getting censored *sigh*) that I have to go through, the hoops I have to jump through.... it's just a waste of my time" etc.
So yeah. I just want to get rid of microsoft - but I'm not really interested in micromanaging linux. Um.... no - NOT doing mac.
I never played on console but my nephew did on his PS4. I was like "Why do I hear people talking?" he said they have auto voice chat. I didn't see a txt chat box, so I guess console can't talk via typing with a keyboard or controller? That sounds awful, this is up there with them not giving a warning to leave a guild or not. On PC I've seen so many people leave guild because they hit x on accident. Why the hell did they make these decisions?
@Shadow_Akula You might want to check your settings. When I recently switched my privacy settings on my xbox account to more strict/private, it completely took away the text chat in ESO (didn't show in the social menu at all) and disabled voice chat as well. I couldn't figure out what the heck happened to area text chat until I remembered I adjusted my privacy because of random message spam from accounts I didn't know.
I am never auto-added to VC in ESO, and I believe it's because I have it set where only friends can add me to chat/parties. Your console settings absolutely affect the social stuff in ESO, so fiddle around with the settings until its the way you prefer.

How dare you...
The only time I'm forced into a voice chat is in, or after, a battleground match.
And I'm talking about in game, not the PSN group voice channels.
Other than that, I've never automatically been placed in voice. Not running dungeons, or trials, or joining Cyrodiil....not unless I ran a BG first and forgot that voice was on.
Even then, it's just a matter of going into the voice menu and pushing ■, all while feeling silly I forgot to do that after exiting my battleground.

Must be nice having it happen only after PvP... I don’t PvP often and get it whenever I log in at night - guess zos don’t dare do it during daylight hours for me
I played one game with build in voice and it was annoying. iirc it only worked when grouped with someone and that was only random GF groups for me.
Most of the chatter was not game related and was just mindless rambling from less than stellar minds. The rest was often from people who barked orders with no authority. Anyone who kept talking I just put on mute because they did more of a disservice than anything else.
I feel for those on console.
