Yeah, the language filter needs some serious work. I would prefer to have it on, but when it censors non-profane stuff constantly, I just turn it off all the time. That means it isn't fulfilling its intended purpose and might as well be scrapped from the game.

Would be nice to have an aggressiveness scaled slider for the level of censorship.

Glad some people got it ;) To those still confounded, it's about the in-game profanity filter, which is a trap for newcomers, and sometimes even old-timers on new characters, because it's enabled by default.

The OP was inspired by someone in Daggerfall asking:
How do I us******* items in crafting?
    us*******
    WTF?
    What's wrong with u.s.e.s.t.y.l.e?

The profanity filters doesn't like E followed by STYLE. Doesn't matter that the E is at the end of the previous word, followed by a space, and then the clean word STYLE. "E STYLE" is as naughty as "ESTYLE". I still don't get it, didn't even know ESTYLE was a word.
Sidenote: the filter has no issues with E-STYLE, E-PEEN or EPEEN.

Often times you can see people advertising their guilds, ending their message with:
If you want to join, whi******e.

As a newcomer who doesn't even know the profanity filter can be disabled, would you join a guild whose guild master can't avoid profanity in recruitment? "SPER M" not allowed in Tamriel, maybe that's why there are no children.

It's equally bad if you speak another language. When I returned after a long break, I didn't know about the filter toggle, and it kept mangling random parts of words. Would you have any issue with the word "mimochodem" (which, by the way, means "by the way")? Profanity filter does have an issue with that and obscures some letters in the middle of that word.

1.) The profanity filter is blocking lots of completely innocent expressions.
2.) It does have the option to turn it off.

I recommend the latter than demanding a fix on the former. Developing or buying a system that actually works, if that's even available, would take time and/or money away from the development of the game.

If it destroys your day if you ever read the word pen'is, than leave it on. Else, turn it off.

Only change I'd appreciate would be making the option to turn it on/off account-wide. The sensitivity of the player won't change with the character.

I was once typing to a friend and when i pressed enter saw something was blocked by the profanity filter. I was like "wtf, i didn't say anything bad".
I typed "is permanent" and apparently got blocked because it read "***", which i consider a nornal word, not something used a swear word or something. But then i remembered that Zos is an American company, so...

Edit: appparently eso forums got the same filter and blocked the word, again 😂

One of the first things I do on a new character is get all my settings squared away, especially the profanity filter getting turned off. I can understand having one in the game for people who don't want to see mindless racial slurs and profanity, but it's way too sensitive imo and, for me at least, causes more problems than it fixes.
    Character List [RP and PvE]:
Stands-Against-Death: Argonian Magplar Healer - Crafter
Krisiel: Redguard Stamsorc DPS - Literally crazy Werewolf, no like legit insane. She nuts
Kiju Veran: Khajiit Stamblade DPS - Ex-Fighters Guild Suthay who likes to punch things, nicknamed Tinykat
Niralae Elsinal: Altmer Stamsorc DPS - Young Altmer with way too much Magicka
Sarah Lacroix: Breton Magsorc DPS - Fledgling Vampire who drinks too much water
Slondor: Nord Tankblade - TESified verson of Slenderman
Marius Vastino: Imperial <insert role here> - Sarah's apathetic sire who likes to monologue
Delthor Rellenar: Dunmer Magknight DPS - Sarah's ex who's a certified psychopath
Lirawyn Calatare: Altmer Magplar Healer - Traveling performer and bard who's 101% vanilla bean
Gondryn Beldeau: Breton Tankplar - Sarah's Mages Guild mentor and certified badass old person
Gwendolyn Jenelle: Breton Magplar Healer - Friendly healer with a coffee addiction
Soliril Larethian- Altmer Magblade DPS - Blind alchemist who uses animals to see and brews plagues in his spare time
Tevril Rallenar: Dunmer Stamcro DPS - Delthor's "special" younger brother who raises small animals as friends
Celeroth Calatare: Bosmer <insert role here> - Shapeshifting Bosmer with enough sass to fill Valenwood

    PC - NA - EP - CP1000+
Avid RPer. Hit me up in-game @Ras_Lei if you're interested in getting together for some arr-pee shenanigans!

The US is... still living in the mid-vic era. Some of us of course are perfectly fine with whatever (though seriously, constant f-bombing causes *rolls eyes* with me). Since this is an M rated game (which means NO ONE under that age range should be playing - which is on parents and lack of parenting....) that's just asinine.

Whenever I bump into a word that hits the filter, I check it out on google and learn something new. ESO is actively increasing my word pool.
