Swollow them and smuggling them through customs at Heathrow. Then give them a tidy up and when nobody is looking swap them for the crown jewels. Equilivant value I estimate.

And you just know that some idiot congresscritter, trying to write up a "feel good" bill with a catchy propaganda name, is going to have such utterly broad & ill-defined wording that it'll blow up all sorts of things in the hands of a crazy prosecutor/sheriff/etc.

No kidding. Remember SOPA? The Stop Online Piracy Act? Had a lot of influential support (mostly from groups that should have thrown up some red flags by doing so) and was on a fast track to becoming law until somebody read the thing and realized it was going to break the whole friken internet. Not to mention the numerous privacy and freedom of speech concerns, among many other issues. I think it was only after sites like Google and Wikipedia went dark in protest that they really seriously considered bringing in some nerds to consult on it.

Yeah, "nerds". Their words. Not experts. Nerds.

Sure inspires confidence in something like loot box legislation, don't it. :unamused:

Crown Gems would likely get converted into Crowns at some abysmal rate where you would never get your fair share back.

Least sounds better than completely losing them. Many people put their money in the crates and has been saving lots gems for long time. I just hope if the day comes, Zenimax or whoever is in charge would think about the fans who have supported them and used the crown store. But i guess people here have convinced me that there's nothing to worry about, thanks to everyone who participated in conversation and have nice day

Been sending in a letter a week to my congressmen and two state senators, for a couple of years now.

Call their office at least twice a week to.

Don't think it did any good.

But I am glad they are looking it and to the original posters question they will change their crates to comply with whatever legislation is signed into law.

They have both hands and both feet into everyone's wallet and they will only relinquish the hold when it is completely empty with no availability for future credit

& technically for ESO its NOT gambling in the legal sense... because the box is NEVER empty.

That is your definition of gambling. each country/state have its own definition wich is what really mather.

Also the dictionary definition is: take risky action in the hope of a desired result.

its the LEGAL DEFINITION of gambling I'm talking about f'lah... not my personal opinion
Crown Crates are more like the games at a carnival or faire, there's a "prize" in each one.

I'm sure they will find a way to embed my gems into a golden crown and ship it to me.

If a ban comes in, you won't be banned from spending the gems you already have, you will just not be able to gamble for more of them.

So, they would still be able to offer items for gem currency, but would (presumably) also start to offer them for a Crown price, too.

LOL the game was doing fine before Crown Crates and it will continue to be fine after Crown Crates. This game never needed the crates.

    True.

Very few people seem to play the game for the crates.

It's very unlikely ESO will remove the crates even if the US law somehow passed. Most focus is on exploiting children and ESO is a game which isn't meant for children.

If they did get removed though I would imagine ZOS would either convert gems to crowns or just leave them and add some options to buy spend them on things to clear them out.

Then, I would suggest they might have to toughen up their preventions to stop children playing, then?

"Not intended for...", alone, won't really cut it, anymore, will it?

...and if they can't, reliably, make sure under 18s (I assume it's regarding under 18s?) can't play, they might have to get rid of crates, instead.

Yeah and if we don't, we won't be buying much of it.

On a semi-related note, I have several dozen items I'll probably never use, and I can convert them to gems and then spend the gems on stuff I'd rather have, like pets or mounts. But I'm leery of doing that because I don't know how it all works.

Specifically, (1) how do you convert such an item to gems, and (2) do you just get one gem per converted item or are some items worth more gems?

    They are worth different amounts.

The conversion rates are rubbish, compared to what it costs to buy them.

However, it's still worth doing, unless you want lots of potions and poisons and things, that are generally worse (or no better) than the crafted ones, cluttering up your bags.

I would assume they would either:

    A. Convert gems into crowns
    B. Allow single items to be purchased by crowns and phase it out

ZOS should take a hard look at removing crown crates whether it's made illegal or not. It's honestly morally reprehensible taking advantage of customers with low chance loot boxes. Some players spend hundreds of dollars and don't even get the item they wanted. You may argue people just need to have self control, but some people simply don't and it can go hand-in-hand with addictive habits such as gambling. It's anti-consumer and a disrespectful practice.

Well, I must admit that I do make an extra effort when there's crates up as daily login rewards.

But yeah, it's not like I'm someone who looks forward to throwing money at them.

Maybe having a mystery box or mystery boxes where you are guaranteed to get an item such as

One of 10 types of costumes
One of 20 types of mounts
One of 50 types of cosmetic items

This way it's not gambling because you are buying these mystery boxes for specific types of items you want. It's still a game of chance but you're not buying and buying crates (this is the gambling bit right here)so you can finally get something other than a potion or repeat item.
The person with a gambling problem cannot stop at a costume or skin when they are aiming for the jackpot rare mount.

All I know for sure is that I stopped buying crates because it felt like gambling to me and I've never liked gambling. I am able to stop myself easily but some people have a gambling problem and can't do that and I don't want their kids (if they have kids) to go withought because their mum or dad spent too much money gambling on crates to get that mount they had to get. This does happen and it really affects families. Also there are parents that allow their under age kids to play 18 + games and no it's not zos' fault but they can't stop that. They do make it clear it's not a game for young kids but kids do get into eso.

I know of parents who's kids played on their accounts. Im not the gaming police so im not going to drop names just saying it happens in all games. Placing age restriction on games is not enough to child proof them. So yes gambling in games does concern me and not so much because I think young kids would get affected because they dont have the credit cards mum and dad do. I personally think some 20+ year olds are still kids and could very easily be affected by the gambling element in eso.

It's not about finding ways for zos to get around gambling, it's about zos acting responsibly towards their community of dedicated players. Zos are a creative lot so I'm sure they will come up with something fun.

I don't think zos meant to have gambling in eso i just think it's a global money making model in games but it's time for a change.

Crown gems could get converted back into crowns
    Or convert gems into rewards
