The people upset about this mount are probably the PVE players who advocate AGAINST PVP-Achievements made easier, because they dislike achievements and rewards handed out like candy to people who don't even want to put some effort into earning said achievement or learning how to play the game.
At least that's the "crowd" i count myself to.

What does it matter if there is someone with the same mount at your side and I buy it with crowns?
You got it for free and with effort and you know it, i do not understand the need to want to shout it to the world.
I think it's good that there are two options, there are people who can not do it because of time or disability, they deserve it too.

If you want it for free then run the dungeon (or whatever). If you're happy to pay, then pay.
If the aim of the game is "play it your way", then we should all be able to do that. Personally, I'd go as far as making DSA, Asylum and other weapons available from The Golden like Monster sets. There's no reason to keep these things away from those who just don't want to spend hours running a trial, etc. "Achievement elitism" is really very boring, and it adds nothing to the game.
Controversial, but there you go!
Controversial? You mean as controversial as every other special snowflake casul? "Achievement elitism" is a the way someone chose to play so yea let's make it brain dead for all special snowflakes to have anything they want without moving a finger
P.S.
It's not as fun as doing quests for some for instance

Sunspire HM players also get the Furniture Achievements for doing the Trial on Hard Mode. You get access to the two Dragon statues that 99.5% of those who do housing will never be able to get access too.. So those are technically consider additional items you get for doing Hard Mode Sunspire, in addition to the Mount and the skin you get for doing it on Vet. I call that a good trade off.
These mounts are making less and less sense. Like how about a simple Ostrich or a Mammoth, a Wamasu or an Ox, a cow? I would rather ride a [snip] Cow into battle than this! lol

I don't want ZOS to tell me "With this mount, we wanted to give something special and unique to our endgame raiders to work for" in their Livestream if that is not the case. [snip]
That's on me though, for believing marketing blabla.
I wouldn't have felt remotely as disappointed had they said "We have a nice crown store mount coming up, and our raiders can even earn it ingame instead of having to spend crowns."

There will be a slightly darker one for crowns
Don’t panic

Agreed. At the very least the trial version needs to be more distinct
