Returning Member/Player (@***_allard) feeling very lost

Recently a friend who is now the Guild Master contacted me about coming back to ESO. So, I agreed without understanding or expecting fully what I was coming back to. First and foremost, I came back having forgotten everything—how to play the game. Secondly, I was told about the other members… friends who had either left the guild or the game entirely.

Can you imagine what I am feeling right now? The guys that I used to run dungeons and the undaunted with are missing. Instinctively, I go back to Grahtwood where we would all gather and I feel like I am in an empty room. No one is there anymore. It breaks my heart. And, I am beginning to wonder if coming back to ESO was the right move? (I was here as an early beta tester too.)

I have so many questions about the game that I have forgotten and I have no one to ask. Just to this out of my system. It has been bugging me all day. Anyway, I appreciate you all listening.

Give it a few weeks and things will settle out.

Folks are all about the events right now so are in the places that that takes place and next is Elswyr so everybody will be there for a bit.

There are people about, you just have to be patient and you'll run in to them.

Try checking on your guild channel that you're a member of.

I finally had to quit mine 'cause they're always in weird places I've never been to and am not ready for, but they're all over the place.

It honestly depends what you get out of the game and what kind of experience you're looking for in your spare time.

Not a cop out answer -- I will explain. :)

I have hopped from MMO to MMO with friends because it was more important for me to play with friends than what game I was playing. I found it actually healthier to explore a new game as opposed to going down the road of focusing on super end game content. When my friends move on from an MMO there is nothing left for me there. But I game with people I know IRL.

However I also at one point stuck with WoW when all of my friends quit gaming. They didn't go anywhere else - they just quit. And I still needed my escape. So I made some new friends.

If you weren't actively playing with your missing friends or communicating with them after you left the game, while a bit of nostalgia is natural don't let it ruin your experience of re-learning the game and having fun with the friend who did reach out to you. Since you can join five guilds I'd recommend joining a social guild or a friendly, low pressure trading guild (I find trading guilds can be super friendly to newbies because membership is always turning over). They will be welcoming and happy to answer your questions if your current guild is a little more serious. As are many of us here on the forums. ;)

And hey... sometimes I feel overwhelmed by my inventory and mod updates alone when I just take a week's vacation so coming back to the game after a long break is going to feel a little bit like learning a new game. But the knowledge will come back quickly.
My #1 wish for ESO Today: Decouple achievements from character progress and tracking.

Thanks, everyone for your kind responses. It is slowly coming back to me. Also, I had forgotten that some of the people that I use to run with were from as far away as Switzerland and Australia, on the NA server. I ran a couple of undaunted dungeons, as a Nightblade Healer, with my guild master and old but new member a short time ago. And, for me, they were a little daunting. But I will get there. Again, thanks for the moral support it has much appreciated.

    Welcome back!

If the only, or main reason you played or enjoyed ESO in the past, was because you were playing with your friends, then perhaps returning wont be the same level of enjoyment.

However, it is possible to make new friends, you can join several guilds, some are very active and have plenty of players looking to group up, run content and help new players with every aspect of the game.

So I would say it can be daunting for a new player because there is so much to see, do, understand and learn. But that is the majesty of the best MMO on the market, its fantastic so dive in and immerse yourself. Join some other guilds. Say hello and ask for help and advice.

    Happy gaming :)

I've actually quit ESO for roughly about two years, came back to the game last Feb. Although, unlike you, I was more of a solo player really-- or at least, when I wasn't on trials with my guild, I usually play Solo or pug a pledge. So that maybe be a little different from your experience. But I have to re-learn the game too. Normally what I do is: 1.) I ask a question or two in either zone or guild chat, I prefer guild chat most of the time, and if no one in guild chat answers, that's when I go to zone and 2.) I google or youtube something I am not familiar-- and when I have time, I read the patches, just so I know what changes have had happened since I was gone.

Again, it maybe different for you since you enjoyed groups more, but I hope that helps. Welcome back. :D

There have been so many major changes to the game that for any player returning after a long break running into years rather than months it's pretty essential in my view that they start a new character and play that at least until they're comfortable with the way the game is playing, rather than jumping into an old veteran level character and expecting instantly to pick up where they left off.

For someone who played at launch and then took a long break I might agree. The OP here, though, was playing after Vvardenfell dropped, so there haven't been as many major changes since. I wouldn't recommend a new character here, as I think it would add more areas for confusion. I think more than anything OP is trying to find their footing without the social net they had in place 1.5 years ago.
